Travel back in time to the Old West in Virginia City, Nevada!

This is the first of three videos of our exploration of historic Virginia City in Nevada! In this episode, we visit Piper's Opera House. We had no idea how many famous people had visited Virginia City and how many had performed at the Opera House. Lilli Langtry, Al Jolson, John Phillip Sousa, Maude Adams, Mark Twain (lectured at the first Opera House but Hal Holbrook performed as Mark Twain a century later at the current one), and many others. Enjoy our journey back in time!

Our travel through Highway 50- The Loneliest Road in America!

We recently traveled from the Border Inn near Baker, Nevada to Carson City, Nevada on a famed stretch of road that over 30 years ago, Life Magazine dubbed "The Loneliest Road in America," Highway 50. To prove that you actively traveled it you must have your guidebook stamped at designated Hwy 50 validation stations. A listing can be downloaded or printed from their website at TravelNevada.com. If you get at least 5 out of the 8 designated stamps, you can mail in the back panel of the book to receive a Certificate of Completion officially signed by the Governor of Nevada. This was an adventure too enticing to resist. We were determined to get all 8 of the stamps. These eight videos comprise our journey. Hope you enjoy watching them!

Did We Finish Our Hwy 50, The Loneliest Road in America Challenge? Road Trip, Day 8 Episode 20

After leaving Austin, Neek, Sar and I drove back on to Highway 50 and motored through the expansive beauty of Nevada. It was around 2pm and while we had driven through half of “The Loneliest Road in America,” we still had four more stamps to get to complete our booklet and receive our certificate of completion. We were a bit concerned that since some of the places that do stamping might close at 5pm, we would have to hurry to reach our goal!

Vice President Pence Has Cause to Support Trump's Kremlin-Friendly Agenda

Vice President Pence Has Cause to Support Trump’s Kremlin-Friendly Agenda

Two of his biggest Indiana corporate backers have significant business interests in Russia

In fact, one of Pence’s main corporate backers, Eli Lilly & Co., was charged by U.S. officials with violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) in 2012 in relation to its business practices in Russia. That same year, Eli Lilly was a leading contributor to Pence’s bid to become governor of Indiana, a race he won by only 3 percentage points against his Democratic challenger.

While serving as a US congressman from 2001-2013, and thereafter as governor of Indiana until this past January, when he took on the vice president’s job, Pence also served the interests of another Indiana-based corporation that has deep business roots in Russia — Cummins Inc.

These two Indiana-based Fortune 500 companies with major business interests in Russia — diesel-engine manufacturer Cummins and drug-maker and distributor Eli Lilly — ranked as the No. 2 and No. 3 donors, respectively, to Pence’s federal campaign coffers, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. The leading donor, at $90,762, was the arch-conservative Club for Growth and its political action committee (PAC).

SNIP

With those facts on the table, it seems a stretch to believe Pence — a former member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee — is just a country-bumpkin politician who was completely clueless about Flynn’s entangling foreign alliances, or lacked the curiosity to examine closely all the clues. The clues included a notice sent this past January by Flynn’s attorney informing Trump’s transition team that Flynn was being investigated by the FBI as well as a letter addressed to Pence from U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings exposing Flynn’s lobbying transgressions.

The shopkeeper told us that the St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Austin, Nevada, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, was abandoned for now and that we should go take a look. Neek got quite a scare from what she thought might be a ghost, but it turned out to be a pleasant surprise!

Historic 1881 Eureka Opera House in Nevada - Road Trip Day 8 Episode 17

Eureka is nicknamed “The Friendliest Town” on the Loneliest Road in America. With that kind of reputation, how could we not visit? This would also be the 3rd stamp in our Hwy 50 book. Only 5 more to go!

Abandoned Mystery Cabin on Highway 50 - Road Trip Day 8 Episode 16

What is the history behind this place? Could this cabin be a genuine relic of the Old West? Could it be from the 20s or 30s, either a bootlegger’s hideout, an old miner, sheepherder or a Great Depression crash pad? Or maybe the construction is from a more recent era, perhaps by hippies attempting to live off the land?

If anyone knows the answer to the mystery, let me know!
