so, i have a lfl on my farm. there are a couple of fb groups that i follow for stewards. 1 is the official page, and the other is 'progressive stewards'
i have no idea what caused the split in the 1st place, but i do know it was politics rearing it's ugly head.
of late racism has been a hot topic on the main board. the subtle racism in a lot of dr seuss's books was a hot button. it's gone about like you'd expect.
i dont usually post in either group. but this am i decided to throw in my 2 cents.

i dont usually post in this group, nor the leftier page, tho i do read. but i want to support those trying to make racism visible to those who dont see it.
if your mission is providing books to children, and you dont see how racist a lot of children's lit is, then you rly ought to educate yourself.
it is understandable that people who have not lived it cannot see it as easily as those who have. it is often devilishly subtle, and based on stereotypes that are very, very old.
obviously folks who go to the trouble to keep a lfl want to make the world a better place. and especially for children.
if you find yourself clinging to old fashioned stories, old worldviews, and old characters that seem harmless to you, take this wonderful opportunity to see the world through new eyes. other eyes.
because, really, isnt that what we all want from books?
ftr, i still love dr zeuss. there are a couple books i wouldnt put in my library, but you cant beat 'the sneeches' for a lesson in the stupidity of racism. or 'yertle the turtle' for a lesson in how totalitarianism works.
but yeah, who knew?

i have made a couple posts about ruth van sickle ford.
she and i grew up in the same house. we never met, but she had a big impact on my life.
i have been collecting her paintings. i have 8 of her water colors, now finally an oil.
this is from early in her career, and i unusual in that it is pretty dark. her work is usually full of light and color. likely why i was the only bidder.
but i am esp pleased to score one that is not like her other work.

a fun netflix series for diy'ers. the repair shop.
a place in england, run by a master furniture restorer, but they fix anything.
art restorations, they have a clock guy and a silver smith. leather, metal, and of course, furniture.
3 items each episode. almost all beloved family heirlooms. some quite amazing objects.
i only have one petty beef- at the end they do a before and after shot, and they desaturate the before shot to make it look like they did more than they did. i doubt most ppl notice it, but it sure bugs me.
all in all, tho, rly cool.

i badly want to add a real book to my portfolio. i am a certified designer, from the school of the art institute. but it is a side gig. my real job is my farm.
i dearly love the work tho. i am good, i am passionate, and i am quick.
i have done lots of booklets, but never a full blown book. i have been dogging several photogs i know irl to do it. 1 guy told me i had the job, but wont get his ass in gear to call me and close the deal.
not sure why the idea of a photo book seems so good to me, but...
guess cuz there is less typing. tho the best ones have a mix.
copywriting is also a thing i am good at, as well as editing.
anyway, willing to work for chump change and a cut.
ya know, now i know why bagpipes get me choked up.
i did not know they represented the dead like that.
i mean, i sorta did.
and the war thing, but not the part about them meaning that freedom was coming,
and the drums w that heartbeat.

well, the adoptees might just be the most fun part of all this.
got a message back from a dna cousin in australia today. sent them a message asking if they were dwyers. got back that she is an adoptee, and has no idea.
she has to be a dwyer because as far as i have seen, they are the only relatives i have that landed there.
how fun to tell a displaced 85 yo 100% irish woman that she is descended from such a hero.
