The real reason a very loud few are posting hostility toward Glenn Greenwald at DU:

Those who build surveillance machines also build propaganda machines. A great deal of effort and resources are being poured into trying to give the false impression that Americans support our own government's abuses of power against us, and that we have contempt for those who exposed them.

It's no accident that the very small group of the loudest smearers of Greenwald are also overwhelmingly the most reliable attackers of liberals and defenders of every corporate outrage coming out of this administration: the TPP, indefinite detention, secret laws, secret courts, assaults on journalism, handing the internet to corporations, drone wars, drilling, fracking, corporate education, privatization, deregulation, etc., etc., etc.

DU overwhelmingly supports the actions of Greenwald and Snowden, as shown in virtually every poll posted here. This group uses the very same tactics, over and over again, including attacks on the messengers, mocking, swarming, and endless diversion from what is really important here: government abuse of power. It is all very familiar, and the tactics detailed in the links below.

Let's repost some reminders of what we are really dealing with here:

CUT THE CRAP! Your Month in Review from the most "progressive" administration ever.

This is just this month, with impressive new Third Way efforts in the areas of mass surveillance, "Kill Lists," corporate health insurance, murdering net neutrality, right-wing appointments, warmongering, toll interstates, *and* environmental and educational assaults!

And, hey kids, the month's not even over yet!

Wouldn't it be nice to have a REAL American Spring,

that focused on the real hijacking of this country by corporate interests?

One that wasn't co-opted by corporate media and propagandists to ramp up partisan divisions and ridicule the idea of real change?

One that didn't set the people against each other so that there is always one group ridiculing the other and ensuring that no real change can ever happen, because the people cannot unite against the corporate vultures bleeding all of us?

One that focused on the fleecing of ALL of us, the 99 percent, and the fact that corporate interests have stolen our representation in this country?

One that focused on bringing all Americans together to get corporate money out of our politics and our media, and return our governent to the people?

One of the most surreal aspects of our new corporate crony politics.

When I was a kid, election years in the U.S.A. were the times when we heard all about the renewed vision and agenda, and what voting for particular politicians or a party would promise for actual people. Everyone, and especially the candidates, went out talking about the new policies being proposed and how they would attract and help voters.

THAT was what excited people and brought them to the polls. Excited talk about policies that would actually improve their lives.

The policies were the REASON for the election and the excitement.

What sort of weird, sick political system do we have now, in which we are constantly exhorted to vote, with almost no mention, ever, of the agenda that is promised for voting?

Actually, most of the bids for voting we see take the form of THREATS. Vote, or these other people will do something worse to you.

And when people post on this board some variation of, "What am I voting FOR, specifically?" they are snarled at and accused of raining on the parade.

There's something very sick about this.

They are taking away our open highways

There is a deeply symbolic aspect to this particular betrayal.

It's about how it feels to live in America.

This is not America anymore.

These have got to be the saddest, most desperate talking points of all.

Honestly, the over-the-top Orwellian chutzpah would be funny if it weren't in the service of devastating millions. Psst....Third Way and Koch = the very same economic/war/police state policies and goals.

Hilarious. This is the second time I have seen this talking point today.

Apparently the "propaganda machine" and its targets have been misidentified....In fact, we have had it all BACKWARDS!

It is a jaw-dropping revelation, as alarming and earthshaking as the threads a week ago that revealed that impoverished Americans' rage at looters and profiteers is wholly justified, but that we have had the wrong target in our sights! We have tragically misidentified the REAL threat to us.....a cunning Goldstein by the name of....wait for it....

Glenn Greenwald.

Yes, Greenwald is the REAL looter and profiteer that Americans need to fear. Not the tentacled NSA, not the rapacious One Percent, and certainly not the corrupt, purchased politicians who have been driving millions into poverty through predatory corporate policy. No, it is Greenwald. He has power!

And now thank god we have you and your compatriots to identify the REAL propaganda machine, too.

Thank goodness you are here on a daily basis to defend the beleaguered NSA, the struggling global banks and corporations, the quivering and impoverished government of the United States, and the bedraggled One Percent against the Massive, Orchestrated Juggernaut of Propaganda being wielded against them by....poor Americans, Glenn Greenwald, and Julian Assange... (cough).

Obviously the dramatic influx of pro-corporate, pro-police state, pro-Third Way, pro-everything One Percent mouthpieces at discussion sites across the internet has NOTHING to do with propaganda. It is merely a fluke of nature that they have swarmed into sites across the internet and shifted the political balance of DU and other discussion forums in just a few short months or years. It is merely an accident that they predictably and reliably swarm *every single discussion* that implicates this administration in the persecution of whistleblowers and journalists and assaults on the Constitution for the benefit of the One Percent. It is merely a bizarre accident that they evidence an influx and constant growth in their numbers that is unnatural to the point of being ridiculous**. And it is wholly a coincidence that they share a consistent set of rules and tactics for smearing liberals, disrupting liberal discussion, and fervently defending, minimizing, or denying *every single aspect* of the growing corporate authoritarian state.

How in the world will the voiceless US government, the helpless surveillance and corporate media machine, and the defenseless banks and corporations of the One Percent *ever* hope to overcome the dread power of the vast propaganda machine wielded by the people against them?!

The goal of the propaganda across the internet is not to convince anyone of anything:

Huge K&R. For the same reason we have trouble accepting

that a profit-sucking corporate middleman is essential to a well-functioning health care system.

For the same reason we struggle with the eminently reasonable concept of attaching a profit motive to the imprisonment of human beings.

For the same reason we recalcitrantly blink when told that the definition of "militant" has been amended to include any male of a certain age who happens to have been blown to pieces by the drone...

...and that the Espionage Act has been reinterpreted to cast as "terrorism" many of the behaviors defining investigative journalism.

For the same reason we stubbornly ignore that putting Social Security cuts on the table and in one's own budget (except during election years) *really* signals a principle-based opposition to such cuts.

For the same reason we are too naive to understand that withdrawing or drawing down some troops in an election year is a great victory, even if the money is diverted to other military actions or to pay for replacement mercenary forces.

For the same reason we don't understand that it is possible to care deeply about climate change and the environment, while simultaneously expanding drilling and fracking and fast-tracking a massive free trade agreement that will allow corporations to sue and challenge national regulations.

For the same reason we don't understand that it is possible to care deeply about income inequality while simultaneously enabling criminal banks and fast-tracking a massive trade agreement that will force Americans to compete with workers in impoverished countries and slash wages across the board.

For the same reason we don't get why it's essential to our safety for the government to spy on us; store our movements online, conversations, and sexual activities in a database for use in the future; and use our taxpayer-funded government agencies for suppression of dissent and corporate espionage.

We simply fail to understand what the corporate-bankrolled Third Way understands: that the implementation of a corporate authoritarian state is a necessary incremental step in the long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long. long, long journey toward a liberal, compassionate future.

They can't tell us people with limited smartness why. It's a secret.

+10000 Not only that, the threats were used to implement real austerity.

and they were used to poison the Democratic Party message and entrench the lying Republican narrative tying Social Security to the deficit and implying that deficit cutting is the most important goal for the country.

Every Democrat, every American, should be sick of the constant Third Way implication that these Social Security threats have been just words and didn't harm anyone. They have harmed EVERYONE.

1. Without the threatened axe of Social Security cuts (which kept returning as the austerity kept escalating), the Third Way would never have been able to sell the vicious budget and social program cuts they HAVE inflicted on Americans...by justifying them as the lesser of two evils.

If you had told us a few years ago that the Barack Obama administration would be presiding over government spending that assaults the poor even more viciously than the RYAN plan, we would never have believed it. Yet that is exactly where we found ourselves, surrounded by corporate mouthpieces exhorting us to be grateful, "because he didn't cut Social Security."

2. For years, Republicans have drummed lies into the heads of the American people about the source of our economic problems and how to fix them. They have pushed vicious austerity and malignant, economy-starving deficit-cutting instead of the real help to the 99 percent that is needed, and they have preached lies about the need to cut SS and LIES about its contribution to the deficit.

President Obama had from Day One of this Presidency to change the narrative about deficits and Social Security. Instead, he has yet again cemented the Republican narrative and made it a "bipartisan" narrative in a way that will not be undone anytime soon.

And this TEMPORARY suspension of the threats, of course during an election year, and of course simultaneously repeating Republican lies about how the deficit will cause them to return in the future....is the obscene Third Way cherry on top.

Third Way Surreal: President seeks credit for election-year pause in his own hostage-taking.

He's *temporarily* removing, during an election year, the ax *he* suspends over our heads repeatedly as a tool to continue implementing vicious Third Way austerity.

You can't make this shit up.

"It will remain on the table"

for exactly as long as the Third Way finds it useful to create hostage situations to justify other vicious austerity measures.

I see the predictable, dishonest Third Way lecturing has already begun upthread...the garbage suggestion that all these threats have somehow been merely decorative and haven't harmed a soul...

'It's always on the table, and nothing ever happens!'

What a reeking load of bullshit. The manipulative threat of cutting Social Social Security is precisely *how* corporate Democrats have been able to inflict vicious austerity on Americans as effectively as they have. Without the threatened axe of Social Security cuts (which kept returning as the austerity kept escalating), they would never have been able to sell the vicious budget and social program cuts they HAVE inflicted on Americans...by justifying them as the lesser of two evils.

If you had told us a few years ago that the Barack Obama administration would be presiding over government spending that assaults the poor even more viciously than the RYAN plan, we would never have believed it. Yet that is exactly where we found ourselves, surrounded by corporate mouthpieces exhorting us to be grateful "because he didn't cut Social Security."

The cuts were offered by the President and put in his budget, and they have been used to inflict vicious austerity on millions of Americans. They *will* happen when the Third Way is finished using the threat of them to justify and implement all these other, very real, assaults.

The Third Way are vicious, manipulative, Koch-funded vipers who have pulled this government and this party so far right over the past five years that the middle class is eviscerated. And now we have the Orwellian spectacle of a Democratic President making pretty speeches about income inequality while simultaneously keeping a plan to steal the subsistence checks of the poor "on the table" and fast-tracking a "trade agreement" that will hand national sovereignty to the corporations that will finish us off.

These are not "centrists." These are corporatists hell-bent on looting this country into destruction.
