Don't mess with this 72-year old pensioner

From rferl:
Before Russia's February 24 invasion of Ukraine, pensioner Valentyn Didkovskiy lived a quiet life in the city of Bucha, near Kyiv, sometimes volunteering to bring supplies to Ukrainian troops. But as a Russian armored column rolled past his house on February 27, he picked up a grenade launcher he had been given by his soldier buddies who recovered it from an invading personnel carrier. Didkovskiy, who trained in the Soviet Army in 1979, used the weapon to blow up a fuel truck, sending the invasion into chaos. He captured the destruction in a mobile-phone video showing burned and wrecked vehicles in the streets.

From C&L:
Soon after the Russians invaded, Valentyn Didkovskiy, 72, was given a captured Russian grenade launcher, an RPG-18, as he was very familiar with the weapon. And even though he'd had a stroke in 2021 and told by his doctor to take it easy and live a 'quiet life,' avoiding stress, Didkovskiy was incensed enough when he saw Russian invaders riding through the streets of Bucha to plan his own ambush. Ironically, he'd learned his anti-tank skills over forty years ago in the Soviet army.

Hitting the fuel truck at just the right spot caused a massive explosion and fireball, triggering further explosions one after another down an entire block. His own home, as closest to the explosions was the most heavily damaged in the area. Miraculously, Didkovskiy survived without a scratch, save for singed eyebrows.

"Stray" cat video game brings some benefits to real cats

NEW YORK (AP) — The virtual cat hero from the new video game sensation “Stray” doesn’t just wind along rusted pipes, leap over unidentified sludge and decode clues in a seemingly abandoned city. The daring orange tabby is helping real world cats as well.

Thanks to online fundraising platforms, gamers are playing “Stray” while streaming live for audiences to raise money for animal shelters and other cat-related charities. Annapurna Interactive, the game’s publisher, also promoted “Stray” by offering two cat rescue and adoption agencies copies of the game to raffle off and renting out a New York cat cafe.

When Annapurna Interactive reached out to the Nebraska Humane Society to partner before the game’s launch on July 19, they jumped at the chance, marketing specialist Brendan Gepson said.

New York Islanders buy 25,000 Mega Millions lottery tickets

The New York Islanders purchased $50,000 worth of Mega Millions lottery tickets, and if the NHL team holds a winning ticket from the estimated $1.28 billion jackpot, they plan to distribute the money among full-season ticket holders, suite holders, staff and the Islanders Children's Foundation.

The Islanders ordered 25,000 total tickets as Mega Millions hits its second-biggest prize in the lottery's history. If the overall winnings from the lottery tickets are below $250,000, the team will donate the complete amount to the Islanders Children’s Foundation.

This is what happens when you let your emotions get the better of you. And it's funny

After the 2020 election, Republican Kristopher Stark stormed off in a huff over Donald Trump not being reelected. Stark claims that the election was actually "stolen" from Trump. He sent a letter to the Seminole County Supervisor of Elections a request to take him off of the voter rolls.

Now that he's running for office in Florida House District 37 there's a problem. A 2021 bill passed by the GOP-run state house requires that candidates running for their party's nomination must be a registered party member for at least 365 days prior to the election.

Soooooooo.... he cannot run
Nice going Kristopher

Boris Johnson and Tory ministers entitled to total 420,000 severance pay for resigning

Boris Johnson and his former ministers are being urged to reject nearly half a million pounds in redundancy pay set to be paid to them for resigning.

Under the Ministerial and Other Pensions and Salaries Act 1991, MPs leaving office are entitled to 25 per cent of their annual salaries in severance.

This benefit applies even if they voluntarily resign from the government, and even if they do so for political reasons – or leave government in disgrace.

Over 50 ministers and parliamentary private secretaries have quit their roles in the last 36 hours in a bid to oust Mr Johnson – meaning Tory infighting could land the taxpayer with a bill of over £420,000.

Even Chris Pincher, the Tamworth MP whose alleged behaviour ultimately triggered the government meltdown, is entitled to a £7,920 pay-off for leaving his job as deputy chief whip.

Pope appoints first cardinal from Amazon rainforest

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — When the Archbishop of the Brazilian city of Manaus Leonardo Steiner kneels before Pope Francis on August 27, the Brazilian clergyman will make history as the first cardinal to come from the Amazon region.

“The communities feel that the distance between Rome and the Amazon is now smaller,” Steiner told The Associated Press in a written interview. “Perhaps this is the reason for the Amazonian people’s joy with Pope Francis’ move.”

Steiner attributed his selection to four priorities of the pope: the desire to do more missionary work in the Amazon and to be attentive to the poor; to care for the Amazon “as our common home” and to be a Church that “knows how to contribute to the autonomy of Indigenous people.”

Sprawling across nine countries, the Amazon region is larger than the European Union. It is home to 34 million people, of whom more than three million are Indigenous, belonging to around 400 ethnic groups, according to the Catholic Church.
