Black couple says racism forced wedding relocation

The Associated Press

JACKSON, Miss. — A Mississippi couple says the church where they planned to get married turned them away because they are black.

Charles and Te'Andrea Wilson say they had set the date and mailed invitations, but the day before their wedding they say they got bad news from the pastor of predominantly white First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs: Some members of the church complained about the black couple having a wedding there.

The Wilsons, who live in nearby Jackson, said they attend the church regularly although they are not members.

Pastor Stan Weatherford told WLBT TV (http://bit.ly/QSNlf8 ) he was surprised when a small number of church members opposed holding the wedding at the church.

"This had never been done before here, so it was setting a new precedent, and there are those who reacted to that because of that," said Weatherford.

Debris from Boeing dreamliner engine sets area around Charleston airport runway ablaze

Debris from a brand new Boeing 787 Dreamliner's engine fell onto the runway and into the grass at Charleston International Airport Saturday afternoon, sparking a fire, shutting down the airport and diverting flights for more than an hour.

“A 787 experienced an engine issue today while undergoing preflight runway testing in North Charleston,” Boeing SC spokeswoman Candy Eslinger said Saturday night.

The gravity of the mishap spurred an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board, Eslinger added.

“After the investigation, we will determine what went wrong and come up with a remedy,” she said.

Officials want to turn World War II nuclear-weapon development sites into national parks

By Darryl Fears, Updated: Saturday, July 28, 6:43 PM

Tennessee’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory was such a well-kept secret during World War II that most Americans still don’t know that it sits off one of busiest highways in the South.

Every year, streams of vacationers whizz by the complex that enriched uranium for America’s first atomic bomb project. It’s on the way to Great Smoky Mountains National Park — the most-visited U.S. national park. And every year, right about this time, the city of Oak Ridge, just west of Knoxville on Interstate 40, holds a Secret City Festival, crying out to potential tourists.

“They don’t even know we’re here,” said Katy Brown, president of the city’s convention and visitors bureau.

But a spotlight might shine soon on the Oak Ridge lab and two other largely forgotten Manhattan Project sites as the nation marks the 70th anniversary of the general order that established the world-shaking atomic research and development program.

By BETH STEBNER, LOUISE BOYLE and EMINE SINMAZ
Two people were killed and more than 100,000 homes and businesses in New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania were without electricity Friday morning after ferocious thunderstorms swept through the region.
A state of emergency and curfew were in effect in Elmira, New York, this morning after a suspected tornado toppled power lines and trees and hospitals were placed on disaster alert.
Only emergency vehicles allowed on the streets until 8 am while the damage was cleared, Chemung County Office of Fire and Emergency Management spokeswoman Karen Miner said.

Krugman- The Doofus Factor

The Doofus Factor

On the whole, I’m not big on the whole “seeming presidential” thing; for the most part, you should judge politicians by what they do, not by appearances. That said, Obama wears the office well: he has a natural dignity that makes him a really good figurehead, quite aside from substance.

And then there’s Mitt Romney

Jerry Sandusky's wife speaks

BELLEFONTE, Pa. -- The wife of convicted child molester Jerry Sandusky says she still loves him and "he's not who they say he is."

Dottie Sandusky made the comments Thursday to a Centre Daily Times reporter during a brief encounter on a street in Bellefonte, Pa., near Penn State, where her husband was an assistant football coach under Joe Paterno.

The newspaper reported that Sandusky was meeting one of her sons and his friend at a pizza shop, just down the street from where her husband was found guilty of sexually abusing 10 boys.

Jerry Sandusky is behind bars awaiting sentencing. He faces a minimum of 60 years in prison.

Dottie Sandusky testified at her husband's trial last month. She said she remembered most of the men who told a jury that her husband sexually abused them, but she said he never had inappropriate contact with them as boys.
