I had a patient this morning who is a therapist, Ph.D. well-trained and very very well-respected in the Philadelphia area. He came in this morning ostensibly with a dental problem but in fact was here to talk. We dispensed with the 'vague discomfort' in about 30 seconds and what ensued was fascinating....
He knows from many years with me that I am a Progressive political animal and enjoys our conceptual congruency and we have mutual respect for each others' intellect and practice philosophies. What he was here for was to see how I was coping and how I was assisting my like-minded patients in coping with the ongoing political nightmare which is unfolding right before our eyes. We talked for a bit and he told me that his clientele, more or less exclusively Democratic/Liberal is going bonkers (my term, not his) with all of this and he asked what was I saying to my own patient population which had also been coming in upset and distraught.
I was less than reassuring: I told him that we should prevail but in my opinion we have seen the first wave of fascism hit the beach fully armed and although it looks like we are going to repel them this time, I'm worried about future invasions and landings. I further stated that if you ever wondered what it was like to be in Germany in the early 1930's and further wondered how you'd react to the early stirrings of pure fascism, now's your chance.
He left slightly optimistic but grieving for America.
