By the time this clown resigns or gets defeated

He’ll have claimed that he was one of the founding fathers.

Republicans fight for nothing harder

than the "right" to discriminate or invalidate or change a person's feelings and/or identity.

January 11, 2023

Right

If we've thought of it, it's nearly guaranteed that the Democrats in Congress have too. That's why all of these "Why don't Democrats do........." posts drive me up the wall. If they're not doing something, there's usually a reason why they've not done it and often times it's as simple as not having the votes, although some people always want to ascribe more conspiratorial motives and/or incompetence to their behavior.

I know

it's crazy. Makes zero sense. The problem seems to be though that these people are filled with petty vengeance. It's not that they don't like government. They just don't want it to do things that don't benefit *them* and they will gum up all of the works to make sure it doesn't work for the average person. But it's even worse because they are able to get the average person to fight against themselves. Also, "Big Government" is great for curtailing abortion and punishing people they hate like POC and LGBTQ people, but not so much for guns and preventing people from discriminating.

Whatever they're gaining in terms of unpaid taxes

Certainly can't make up for the lack of services, infrastracture, and right-wing politics and culture wars, can it? I know that even right-wing states have some blue spots but if the state has a Republican supermajority year after year with the likes of DeSantis and Abbott and divisive culture wars crowding out other essential human concerns, is it really worth it in the end?

The Supreme Court is manipulating its own calendar to lock GOP policies in place

Confirms what we've long suspected about the court becoming more........PARTISAN (despite desperate claims by Alito and others to the contrary)

"....Similarly, last July, a Trump judge named Drew Tipton effectively seized control of much of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’s authority over Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the agency that enforces immigration law within US borders. Tipton’s opinion is exceedingly weak and cannot be squared with more than a century of Supreme Court precedents, and a majority of the justices appeared likely to reverse Tipton during oral arguments on the case in November.

But the Court has also sat on this case for months, rejecting the Justice Department’s request to immediately restore Secretary Mayorkas’s lawful authority over ICE in July. The Supreme Court may not rule on the case, known as United States v. Texas, until next June — at which point Tipton will have unlawfully usurped Mayorkas’s authority for 11 months.

The Court’s tendency to manipulate its own calendar isn’t restricted to immigration cases. One of the most high-profile examples of the Court delaying resolution of a case brought by left-leaning litigants occurred in September 2021, before the Court’s 2022 decision overruling Roe v. Wade. A 5-4 Court refused to decide a case challenging Texas’s strict anti-abortion law known as SB 8, effectively allowing Texas to ban many abortions while Roe remained good law. (In fairness, the Court did eventually rule on SB 8 the next December, but that decision established that SB 8 is immune from any meaningful constitutional challenge.)"

It should be noted too that Mayorkas is one of the GOP's presumptive impeachment targets and has received the brunt of the blame for the difficulties at the border.

How ironic LOL

But religious freedom doesn't mean freedom for one religion, nor does it mean that one religion can dictate the laws for everybody else.

Sotomayor and Kagan need to think about retiring

I think that this article is overly pessimistic and that it's way too premature to suggest that Sotomayor and Kagan should resign anytime soon but thought I'd share it and see what everybody else thinks

https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/23507944/supreme-court-sonia-sotomayor-elena-kagan-ruth-bader-ginsburg-retire

Here is the gist of it:

"Both justices are much younger than Ginsburg was in 2014. There are no reports that either is in ill health (although Sotomayor has diabetes, she’s managed that condition nearly her entire life). Realistically, both justices could probably look forward to a decade or more of judicial service if they desire it. But even a mighty Supreme Court justice cannot overcome the merciless math facing Democrats in a malapportioned Senate that effectively gives extra representation to Republicans in small states.

Barring extraordinary events, Democrats will control the White House and the Senate for the next two years. They are unlikely to control it for longer than that. The 2024 Senate map is so brutal for Democrats that they would likely need to win a landslide in the national popular vote just to break even. Unless they stanch the damage then, some forecasts suggest that Democrats won’t have a realistic shot at a Senate majority until 2030 or 2032. And even those forecasts may be too optimistic for Democrats."

They are going to unimaginable lengths

to turn "religious freedom" from a shield against unlawful religious persecution into a sword by which to convert the rest of the country to their belief system.

December 12, 2022

Yes

but it's going to take a bipartisan consensus and, more importantly, the willingness of Republicans to come to the table in a good faith effort to address the issue in sincere and humane ways. So far, there's been little to no evidence that they are willing to do so, which hinders any efforts to make substantial and positive systemic changes. So, until that happens............

There was almost a bipartisan deal in 2013 in the Senate but the House under Boehner wouldn't take it up.
