Trump Offers $1 Million Bond to Appeal Clinton Suit Sanctions

Source: Bloomberg

Trump and one of his lawyers, Alina Habba, offered to post a $1.03 million bond to appeal a judge’s order sanctioning them $937,989 for filing a “frivolous” conspiracy suit against Hillary Clinton and others.

Trump and Habba made the offer Friday in a letter to US District Judge Donald M. Middlebrooks in Florida, asking him to put his sanctions order on hold while they appealed. Middlebrooks last month ordered Trump and Habba to jointly pay fees and costs racked up by Clinton and others while defending claims that she led a vast conspiracy against the former president.

“Its inadequacy as a legal claim was evident from the start,” the judge said of the Trump’s suit in his sanctions order. “No reasonable lawyer would have filed it. Intended for a political purpose, none of the counts of the amended complaint stated a cognizable legal claim.”

The unprecedented sanctions against a former president, who has announced he is running again in 2024, were issued on behalf of 18 defendants who submitted a joint motion accusing Trump of knowingly filing a suit with bogus and unbelievable claims to dishonestly advance a political narrative.

Trump and Habba said Friday their proposed bond represents 110% of the total sanctions and isn’t opposed by Clinton, according to the filing by Jared J. Roberts, who is handling the appeal.

Hunter Biden's lawyers, in newly aggressive strategy, target his critics

Abbe Lowell is a great attorney and will make these assholes lives miserable

Hunter Biden’s lawyers, in a newly aggressive strategy, sent a series of blistering letters Wednesday to state and federal prosecutors urging criminal investigations into those who accessed and disseminated his personal data — and sent a separate letter threatening Fox News host Tucker Carlson with a defamation lawsuit.

The string of letters, which included criminal referrals and cease-and-desist missives aimed at critics and detractors, marked the start of a new and far more hard-hitting phase for the president’s son just as House Republicans prepare their own investigations into him.

Abbe Lowell, a recently hired lawyer whom Biden enlisted about a month ago, sent lengthy letters to the Justice Department and Delaware’s attorney general requesting investigations into several key players who were involved in disseminating data from a laptop that Biden is said to have dropped off at a repair shop in Wilmington, Del......

“This marks a new approach by Hunter Biden and his team,” said one person familiar with his strategy, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss private plans. “He is not going to sit quietly by as questionable characters continue to violate his rights and media organizations peddling in lies try to defame him.”

The new strategy marks a calculated risk that it is better to forge a combative path and take on Biden’s longtime critics, even if it means inviting more news coverage of a dark chapter in his life and draws additional attention to the trove of personal and embarrassing material included on a laptop that has been disseminated by his detractors.

In the letters related to his personal data, Biden’s lawyers are asking state and federal law enforcement agencies to investigate individuals who came into possession of the data, some of which could have come from a laptop he purportedly dropped off in Delaware in April 2019. They claim that about a half-dozen people have violated various statutes, including by making public restricted private information; accessing and disseminating stolen property; and making false statements to Congress.

Trump 2020 Campaign Suit Against Washington Post Dismissed

This was a fun opinion to read. TFG failed to properly alleged malice and so the case was dismissed. The standard for malice for a lawsuit against a public figure is actual knowledge or reckless disregard as to the truth of the statement. TFG claimed that statements were false because he does believe these statements and that the Washington Post must hate him because they disagree with him. TFG did not come close to proving malice.

A defamation lawsuit by President Donald Trump’s 2020 campaign against the Washington Post was dismissed by a federal judge.

US District Judge Rudolph Contreras in Washington ruled Friday that the campaign failed to meet the legal standards for defamation claims over the two articles at issue in the March 2020 suit. One was about the report of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election, and the other was about Trump’s 2020 campaign strategy.

Contreras said the campaign failed to show the writer of the Mueller piece acted with “actual malice.” General allegations of political bias weren’t enough, and there wasn’t evidence the writer knowingly or recklessly published false information, the judge wrote.

The second article was an opinion piece protected by the First Amendment, Contreras found......

The Trump campaign filed several lawsuits against media outlets in 2020; judges in New York and Georgia previously tossed out cases against the New York Times and CNN, respectively. The former president himself has a separate, more recent defamation case against CNN pending. He also earlier this week filed a lawsuit against veteran Washington Post journalist Bob Woodward, but that was a copyright rather than defamation suit.

Civil rights lawsuit against Kyle Rittenhouse can proceed, judge rules

This lawsuit will be fun to watch. Civil juries will not buy this asshole's crying routine. You cannot defeat a good lawsuit by hiding and hoping that you are not served and then having your attorney lie about this
https://twitter.com/Sanikri/status/1621533255827701760
https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2023/02/02/kyle-rittenhouse-lawsuit-kenosha-john-huber/

A wrongful-death lawsuit filed by the father of a man fatally shot by Kyle Rittenhouse during protests in Kenosha, Wis., can move forward, a federal judge in Wisconsin ruled Wednesday.

Rittenhouse shot three men at an August 2020 protest for racial justice, killing Anthony Huber and Joseph Rosenbaum. He was acquitted on all counts by a jury in 2021, but Huber’s father, John Huber, filed a civil suit over his son’s death.

Rittenhouse’s attorneys had sought to dismiss the lawsuit, arguing that Huber’s attorneys failed to properly serve him with a copy of the complaint and failed to show that he conspired with law enforcement and other individuals to inflict violence on protesters on the basis of their race.......

In his decision Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman wrote that Huber’s attorneys have made extensive efforts to find Rittenhouse’s permanent residence to serve him the court documents while Rittenhouse was “deliberately cagey about his whereabouts.”

Huber “engaged three professional investigators who have spent more than 100 hours searching for Rittenhouse all over the country,” Adelman wrote. “Rittenhouse, in contrast, is almost certainly evading service.”

Trump replaces yet another lawyer after she is sanctioned for 'frivolous' election lawsuits: report

TFG fired this idiot

https://www.rawstory.com/trump-replaces-yet-another-lawyer-after-she-is-sanctioned-for-frivolous-election-lawsuits-report/

Alina Habba, an attorney who has represented Trump in this case and made frequent appearances on right-wing television defending the former president, joins a long list of attorneys Trump has replaced.

"According to court documents filed on Tuesday, veteran New York lawyer Joe Tacopina has been brought in to work with the former president to fight the suit filed against him by the former Elle columnist," reported Ewan Palmer. "Carroll is suing Trump for sexual battery over allegations he raped her in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room in New York in the 1990s. She is also suing the former president for defamation for comments he made while denying the assault, including stating 'she's not my type.'"

Notably, Trump appeared to contradict this defense in a recent deposition, when he mistook an image of a young Carroll for his second wife, Marla Maples — forcing Habba to step in and correct him.

Habba, who previously rose to right-wing legal stardom by representing a college student trying to overturn COVID-19 emergency measures, and then got involved in cases seeking to overturn the 2020 election, developed a reputation for her confrontational approach, that led even many officials in Trump's circle to grow tired of her. A Florida judge recently slapped her with sanctions for advancing a "frivolous" lawsuit against Hillary Clinton and several Justice Department and FBI officials in the 2016 election.

That lawsuit had sought $250 million in damages for what Trump described as a scheme to invent fake Russia allegations against him and damage his reputation. The Mueller report in fact documented that Russian interference on behalf of Trump did happen, repeatedly.

Habba is one of a long line of lawyers who once defended Trump to be replaced. Some, like Michael Cohen, even went to prison over their activities on Trump's behalf. Cohen has since begun cooperating with Manhattan prosecutors in a hush payment case against his former boss.

I hope that the new attorney got a very large retainer
