The National Archives has still not recovered all the presidential records that should have been turned over at the end of the Trump administration, according to a new letter to Congress from the acting archivist.

"We do know that we do not have custody of everything we should," Debra Steidel Wall, acting archivist of the United States, said in her letter to Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., suggesting that former officials had still not turned over electronic messages of official business done on personal accounts.

Wall said the National Archives and Records Administration "would consult with the Department of Justice" on whether "to initiate an action for the recovery of records unlawfully removed."

In a statement, Maloney said it was "outrageous that these records remain unaccounted for 20 months after former President Trump left office."

"Former President Trump and his senior staff have shown an utter disregard for the rule of law and our national security by failing to return presidential records as the law requires," Maloney said. "I will continue to do everything in my power to ensure that all presidential records from the Trump White House are returned to the custody of the government and to make sure these abuses never happen again."

Happy Birthday President Carter

Jimmy Carter, the oldest living former US president, turns 98 on Saturday.

Carter will celebrate quietly at home with his family, according to a spokesperson from The Carter Center. The Carter Center will host a series of virtual events to celebrate the former president’s birthday and legacy, and the public is encouraged to send him a virtual birthday message via his nonprofit.

Carter became the oldest living US president in history after the passing of George H. W. Bush, who died in late 2018 at 94. In recent years, he has kept a low public profile due to the coronavirus pandemic but has continued to speak out about risks to democracy around the world, a longtime cause of his.......

After his presidency, Carter has leaned further into human rights, and founded The Carter Center along with his wife, Rosalynn, in hopes of advancing world peace and health. The Carter Center has worked to advance democracy by monitoring foreign elections and reducing diseases in developing countries over the years. Carter himself has been a longtime volunteer with Habitat for Humanity.

He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his efforts to push for peace across the globe.

Carter beat brain cancer in 2015 but faced a series of health scares in 2019, and consequentially underwent surgery to remove pressure on his brain. He has since recovered but his health woes forced him to give up his decades-long tradition of teaching Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist Church in his hometown of Plains, Georgia.

4 key takeaways from the Texas governor's debate between Gov. Greg Abbott, Beto O'Rourke

This is a good summary of the debate. The key thing that I took is that Beto challenged Abbott directly and was more aggressive than Betw was with Carnival Cruz. Carnival Cruz is an asshole and Beto did not do a good job of pinning Carnival Cruz down in 2018. Beto did a great job with Abbott

But that doesn’t mean both candidates weren’t able to score major points in trying to define the other during their one and only face-to-face battle. Throughout Friday night's debate in Edinburg, Abbott labeled O’Rourke a flip-flopper while O’Rourke continually emphasized that Abbott has had eight years to fix problems such as shoring up the state's shaky power grid and school violence and hasn’t been able to get it done.....

O'Rourke, who has struggled in past debates, appeared far more disciplined in staying on his message and trying make his overall case against Abbott throughout the night — something he couldn't quite manage in 2018 when he ran for the U.S. Senate......

But O’Rourke was ready, saying the border has only gotten worse as Abbott has dithered with an array of “stunts” such as busing migrants to Democrat-controlled cities and slowing trade with Mexico by ordering more vehicle inspections in a gambit that cost Texas billions in lost trade.

“We are 8 years into his time as governor, and this is what we have on our border,” O’Rourke said, adding after $4 billion of spending on Abbott’s Operation Lone Star, more migrants are crossing than before......

It goes beyond the border. After Abbott said he wanted to raise teacher pay, O’Rourke said he’s had 8 years and the state’s teachers are still underpaid by $7,500 a year. Later, Abbott said he wanted to lower property taxes. Again, O’Rourke said Abbott’s had two terms in office to address it, but tax bills continue to climb.

And O’Rourke really hammered that point home in his closing statement.

"Look, I don't think that Greg Abbott wakes up wanting to see children shot in their schools or for the grid to fail, but it's clear he is incapable or unwilling to make the changes necessary to prioritize the lives of our fellow Texans," O’Rourke said.

I like this verion of Beto and he was far more effective than he was in 2018. Like Carnival Cruz, Abbott is a litigator but those skills did not work this time around
