About Me

I've been a female working a "man's job" (mechanical engineer), stay at home Mom (6 kids), working Mom (6 kids to put through college), unemployed, underemployed, temporarily employed and now working from home! We live on an old, small farm with 2 dogs and 2 cats in the house, variable number of chickens out in the yard.

Mitt and the oil pipeline - does he know it's a Canadian owned

pipeline to take Canadian oil across some of the most vulnerable and valuable territory in this nation ( the Ogallala aquifer) in order to ship it to China?

If he knows, does he care?

I can't get Ryan's story about Mitt visiting the victims of a car wreck out of my head -

- Did he tell it to deliberately hit Joe in the heart and disable him for the duration of the debate?

- Is that the only story Mitt can tell of his personal generosity?

- Were they so stupid and uninformed not to realize that that story was a rude personal attack on Joe Biden; a retelling of the worst thing that ever happened to him?

- Who came up with that story and decided that Ryan should feed it into the debate?

What's Mitt going to do to follow up at the debate Tuesday - tell about visiting a woman with terminal cancer and promising to pay her bills and send her son to college?

The fiscal cliff - how many of the jobs that would be hit by cutting the Defense budget are

in Red States?

BTW - I'm thinking a sudden cut in government spending would be disastrous right now - a stimulus in reverse!

Last winter I had a lot of trouble trying to breathe the cold outside air.

Does anyone have advice for using a scarf or filter to take care of this? I've worn filters, but sometimes they take to much effort to be used comfortably.

Kind of a serious question - but how do I make sure a coyote keeps its distance?

I was walking my dogs yesterday down to the back of our property (old dairy farm gone to woods). I spotted a good sized Eastern coyote - about the size of a German Shepherd. I realized then that this beast and his buddies are responsible for all the cuts into the underbrush on either side of my walking path. (the path is a right of way for a power line.)

Here are my thoughts - if i keep wearing my orange vest ( the one I wear so no one mistakes me for a deer/turkey/rabbit/grouse/etc) and start carrying by shillelagh, I may be able to con the coyotes into thinking I'm a hunter.

Worth a shot?

Mrs. Ryan's Interior Decorating venture - Small Business or hobby?

"On Wednesday, Paul Ryan capped off an evening littered with small business references by sharing an emotional story about his mother, Betty Douglas. He explained that, following his father’s death, his mother returned to school and eventually launched her own interior decorating company in Wisconsin.

“She earned a new degree and learned new skills to start her small business,” Ryan said during his address accepting the vice presidential nomination. “It wasn’t just a new livelihood. It was a new life, and it transformed my mom from a widow in grief to a small business woman whose happiness wasn’t just in the past. Her work gave her hope, it made our family proud.”"

"He also said that after her husband’s death, his mother, who later remarried, went back to college and started an interior decorating business with three or four employees."

So the Ryans were proud of her, but Paul isn't sure whether she had 3 or 4 employees.

I'm not running down interior decorators here; I'm just wondering if Mrs. Ryan, who I suspect owned a share of this:

was really dependent on her small business for her bread and butter.

Who "accidently" crashes a party?

Romney said that he had received an invitation in his mailbox for a neighborhood holiday party and had not intended to go until he saw the house across the street from him lit up in Christmas decorations and with people milling on the porch.

“People were on the porch. They were kind of looking over at our house and I thought, ‘Oh, my goodness I wasn’t planning on going to this, but we’ll look like we’re not social if we don’t show up,’” Romney said. “So I said to Ann, ‘We’ve got to go to this party. I got this flier about the neighborhood party. We gotta go over there,’ so she said OK.”

Romney said he and his wife had dinner, took photos with everyone and then realized they were at the wrong party.

“Turns out, this wasn’t the neighborhood party,” Romney said, laughing. “So we were a little embarrassed but they treated us well nonetheless and I got to meet some really interesting people.”

I'd love to know when and where this party was - I doubt people were milling on the porch in Massachusetts!

He was at the party; I'm saying that the notion that he just had to stop by doesn't pass the smell test!

Does anyone have a link to the clip of FR that was shown on the Daily Show last night?

OK - here's a challenge for you - what do you use as a substitute for corn syrup

in various recipes?
