yurbud's JournalONION: Point-Counterpoint Teach for America temp teachers for poor kids
I hadn't thought of it this way before, but it sure as hell is true.
Would you want to go to a lawyer or doctor or mechanic who was just "trying it out" for a year or two before going on to their real career as a teacher?
Then why give kids to teachers who are just doing it on a lark?
My Year Volunteering As A Teacher Helped Educate A New Generation Of Underprivileged Kids
BY MEGAN RICHMOND, VOLUNTEER TEACHER
When I graduated college last year, I was certain I wanted to make a real difference in the world. After 17 years of education, I felt an obligation to share my knowledge and skills with those who needed it most.
After this past year, I believe I did just that. Working as a volunteer teacher helped me reach out to a new generation of underprivileged children in dire need of real guidance and care. Most of these kids had been abandoned by the system and, in some cases, even by their families, making me the only person who could really lead them through the turmoil...

Can We Please, Just Once, Have A Real Teacher?
BY BRANDON MENDEZ, JAMES MILLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENT
You've got to be kidding me. How does this keep happening? I realize that as a fourth-grader I probably don't have the best handle on the financial situation of my school district, but dealing with a new fresh-faced college graduate who doesn't know what he or she is doing year after year is growing just a little bit tiresome. Seriously, can we get an actual teacher in here sometime in the next decade, please? That would be terrific.
Just once, it would be nice to walk into a classroom and see a teacher who has a real, honest-to-God degree in education and not a twentysomething English graduate trying to bolster a middling GPA and a sparse law school application. I don't think it's too much to ask for a qualified educator who has experience standing up in front of a classroom and isn't desperately trying to prove to herself that she's a good person...

Democrats Mock GOP For Protecting Own Health Care In Repeal Vote
Source: Huffington Post
WASHINGTON -- Democrats are mocking Republicans in the House of Representatives for voting to repeal the health care reform law and keep their own enhanced medical care.
When Congress passed the health care law, it required members of Congress to get their insurance on exchanges with the rest of the public. But in voting to repeal that law, Republicans and a handful of Democrats were also voting go back to the old system where the lawmakers get a sweeter deal than most of the rest of the country.
They also voted against a Democratic motion that said members of Congress who support repealing the health care law must also repeal the good stuff they get, such as lifetime care and insurance regardless of pre-existing conditions.
Democrats tried to demonstrate how Republicans distanced themselves from voting to protect their own deal by capturing a slew of GOP members on video saying they didn't vote to protect their own care, as seen below. The clip features a number of Republicans in tight races this year, as well as GOP budget guru, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin.

If you get any right wing viral emails, you know that they want to take away any perks congress gets that the rest of us don't.
Whatever the wisdom of that, this shows that their elected representatives don't agree.

I think he would need more time to make political contributions and appoint formar lawmakers to his board of directors or hire them as lobbyists before this would work.
Iceland Has Hired An Ex-Cop To Hunt Down The Bankers That Wrecked Its Economy (US?)
Maybe it's time to put up a clock from the time of the housing bubble bursting or Hank Paulson's blackmail demand of $700 billion until a CEO of one of the top banks that wrecked our economy and the WORLD'S is indicted, convicted, and imprisoned.
We don't even have to hunt them down. They're hiding in plain sight. Maybe the problem is some of our politicians might be jostled during the arrest raids or these guys might not have signed the campaign contribution checks before they are cuffed.
At the very least, these guys should be treated as a greater threat to America and the world than Bradley Manning.
That's because the government has appointed a white collar crime bounty hunter who wants to haul your behind in (alive, to be sure).
LeMonde reporter Charlotte Chabas has a profile of Ólafur Þór Hauksson, a former local police lieutenant whom the Iceland government appointed to track down individuals likely to have helped sink the country's banking sector during the credit crunch.
***
Hauksson oversees a posse of 100 researchers to help track down outlaws. He's netted some major convictions since starting in 2009, including the former chief of staff of the country's finance minister on insider trading charges. Many others await their day in court, Chabas writes.

Exposing How Donald Trump Really Made His Fortune: Inheritance from Dad and the Gov't's Protection
This reminds me of what Molly Ivins used to say about Baby Bush, "He was born on third base and thought he hit a triple."
Trump inherited money that his dad made largely through gov't contracts and programs, and took advantage of laws like imminent domain to make himself richer.
No one makes it on their own. They build on what was given to them and using the structures the greater society provides. Those who say otherwise simply want to burn the bridges they crossed and ladders they climbed, so they don't have to pay to maintain them, and so they can enjoy their success more because so few can do the same.
Trump was born in New York City in 1946, the son of real estate tycoon Fred Trump. Fred Trumps business success not only provided Donald Trump with a posh youth of private schools and economic security but eventually blessed him with an inheritance worth an estimated $40 million to $200 million. It is critical to note, however, that his fathers success, which granted Donald Trump such a great advantage, was enabled and buffered by governmental financing programs. In 1934, while struggling during the Great Depression, financing from the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) allowed Fred Trump to revive his business and begin building a multitude of homes in Brooklyn, selling at $6,000 apiece. Furthermore, throughout World War II, Fred Trump constructed FHA-backed housing for US naval personnel near major shipyards along the East Coast.

When Romney says or does something stupid, we should say, "What did that MITTWIT do this time?"
He's not as breathtakingly stupid as Bush, but this is a political tone deafness that deserves special recognition of its own, and calling him a nit wit would be an insult to nits.
It would probably just take a couple of times to stick.
And unlike other insults like "Willard" and "Rmoney," this makes him look less qualified to be president since some people like money and rats.

It didn't work, but it is a reminder of who the winner was in the long game: the violent guy lost everything and the non-violent guy wearing a bedsheet won everything.
We aren't beat yet, and the more hysterical and violent the right gets, the more likely they are to be history's losers.
Syria, Libya, & Wes Clark on neocons list of countries to overthrow
Whenever the shit hits the fan in the Middle East, I think of this story Wes Clark has told a number of times over the years, especially when we suddenly become concerned about human rights in one of the countries on the list or their microscopic military is declared a threat to the most powerful military in the history of the world.
It seems like the means of our foreign policy have changed under Obama, but not the ends.
Six weeks later, I saw the same officer, and asked: Why havent we attacked Iraq? Are we still going to attack Iraq?
He said: Sir, its worse than that. He said he pulled up a piece of paper off his desk he said: I just got this memo from the Secretary of Defenses office. It says were going to attack and destroy the governments in 7 countries in five years were going to start with Iraq, and then were going to move to Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Iran.

Ed Sec Arne Duncan says use more than test scores to eval teachers
Oddly, what he says here is roughly what happened before corporate education reform and NCLB.
I wonder if this is meant as a sop to teachers to kill any demands for policy change before the election, and then they can go back to teacher bashing after the election.
It is another example to me of how were not focused on the right things in the American education conversation today, Mr. Starr said. I have a lot of respect for Arne Duncan, he added, referring to the secretary of education, but its just sort of moving around the chairs on the Titanic.
Mr. Duncan, in a telephone interview on Thursday, said states that had received waivers, including New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, would also use a mix of other indicators to evaluate teachers and schools, like how many students actually enrolled in college or took Advanced Placement exams, as well as reviews of teachers by their peers, their students and their principals.
