The Nation Is Rejecting Trump

Peaceful elections, peaceful counting of ballots and a peaceful transition of power are the hallmarks of American democracy, and every offense against those traditions is an attack on our country. It may not be "treason," a term abused relentlessly by Trump in his vicious tweets, but it is surely a betrayal of this nation's values and of the oath taken by the president and every other officeholder.
Sooner, rather than later, all the votes will be counted. Neither Trump nor his mobs can stop the completion of that democratic work, even if they cause difficulty and delay. Neither can his lawyers, at least not so far, although they will surely try.
And when that work is done, a few important things will be clear. Despite all the noise and intimidation, Americans stepped forward in unprecedented numbers to express their democratic will. We have not seen such a large proportion of the electorate actually vote for almost a century, and we have never seen sheer numbers of this magnitude, now expected to exceed 150 million. It is true — and, frankly, dismaying — that the corrupt and inept Trump has gotten more votes than he won in 2016. But his portion of the total popular vote is likely to be lower than the share won by Mitt Romney in 2012.
Regardless of the threats, intimidation and suppression, Joe Biden is on course to achieve a popular-vote mandate of historic proportions. While that majority won't make Biden president in our distorted system, he seems destined to win the Electoral College as well. Either way, however, the enormous turnout represents a robust national confidence in democracy and a powerful repudiation of Trump.
That just may be enough to save America.

As I type this, the next president of the United States has yet to be confirmed. By the time you read this, you will likely know Joe Biden won the election by both the popular vote and the Electoral College. For so many months I've clung to an imagined moment of joy in being able to say that, but my, how this has dragged on, and there will be no massive repudiation of Donald Trump.
Those numbers will grow, but I'm already working on how to accept that at least 68 million of my fellow Americans are just fine with a president who wanted brown children ripped out of the arms of their mothers, repeatedly refused to condemn white supremacists and caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Americans through his willful neglect in the early months of this pandemic. That's just the tip of a long list, but how is that not enough for anyone who cares about basic decency, let alone the future of our country?
I don't know the answer to that question, and right now I'm not interested in pursuing it. I am feeling the weight of what this means.
Yesterday, on Wednesday, I did something I've never done on Nov. 4. I set up a Christmas tree in our family room, just to the left of the nonstop broadcast of the election results. It's smaller than usual, less than 5 feet tall, but its sparkles have reignited something deep in me.
I've known for months now that there will be no family gathering for Christmas. No grandchildren will squeal with delight at the sight of my husband in his Santa suit, and I won't have to worry about his shoulder drooping under the weight of the canvas bag of toys. We won't be inflating extra mattresses. Our house will not fill with the sounds of loved ones reunited.
For a while, I wasn't sure I'd even put up a Christmas tree. "What would be the point?" I said to my husband last month. He looked at me as if he'd just found a stranger in our living room. "This isn't you," he said. "You'll find your reason." As soon as he said it, I knew he was right. Where there is love, there is hope.
We are in for a long, hard winter with this pandemic, but in a few weeks, we'll have a president who will lead us through. Imagine that, as often as you can.
An angel has found her way to the top of our Christmas tree. She is early, and she is right on time.

Fox News has reportedly told its on-air talent to “stay away” from referring to Joe Biden as the president-elect when the news network declares him the winner of the 2020 election. Instead, they should say he has “enough electoral votes to win the presidency,” according to internal memos obtained by CNN. The memos reportedly stressed that the conservative network should continue to cover President Trump’s court battles in several states over ballot counting. “We will report both sides until there is further guidance,” one said. Biden was closing in on the presidency Friday morning, with Pennsylvania announcing that he’d taken the lead there. If Biden wins the Keystone State, he’d have enough electoral votes to clinch the White House.

Trump to America Today: Democracy Is for Suckers and Losers
I gotta tell you: I watched Trump's appearance today in the White House press room with enough burning schadenfreude to power a small city. As much as I wanted to be appalled and saddened and enraged, mostly what I thought was "Suffer, motherfucker." If Biden ends up winning, as almost everyone seems to believe he will, this excruciating ballot count will have been worth it because Donald Fucking Trump was dragged down into the shit he created, watching it all fall apart. Sure, a swift ending would have been preferable, but this is so obviously tearing his tiny brain and his titanic ego to shreds that I'll take it.

Trump lied and he lied and then he lied some more. And some of them were things he knows are lies and some of them were things that he just doesn't understand but refuses to learn because fuck you, learning is for losers. He thinks that if you don't want him reelected, you must be part of an evil cabal that is trying to undermine democracy because, surely, democracy can only have one outcome. And fuck those Black cities of Philadelphia and Detroit for being Black and therefore corrupt.
It's what he's been telling us for the last four years, since he insisted that his loss of the popular vote to Hillary Clinton had to be because of undocumented immigrants voting by the millions in California. It's what he's been telling us by saying that voting by mail in a pandemic is bad and instead spread coronavirus through rallies and, likely, through telling millions of people to stand in line to vote. You know what we get from that? The biggest numbers of COVID infection since the whole thing began.
And of course he's going to take all this to court. It's all he does. He's the whiniest fucking Karen in history, always asking to speak to the manager, always demanding that he get special treatment, always demanding that system bend to his cruel and avaricious ass.
He could have worn a fucking mask. But he thought he was too good for it. The same goes for the law. The same goes for democracy.
Yeah. Suffer, motherfucker.

A funny video made the rounds online last night, featuring two groups of Donald Trump supporters: one demanding that vote-counts continue, the other demanding that vote-counts end.

The confusion was amusing, but also understandable. These conservatives are, after all, taking their cues from the president and his team, who are also struggling to keep their stories straight.
This morning, for example, Trump published a tweet that read, "STOP THE COUNT!" (The Republican incumbent apparently doesn't realize that if all vote-counting were to end immediately, he'd lose the election.) Around the same time, Kellyanne Conway appeared on Fox News and said largely the opposite: "We can't wait three hours, three days, three weeks, to get a result in our great, sturdy democracy as to whom the president will be? What is the rush all of a sudden?"
And there's Kayleigh McEnany, who appears to have White House and Trump campaign roles simultaneously, and who insisted on Fox News this morning that Pennsylvania election officials shouldn't count ballots that arrive after Election Day, even if the votes were cast legally on Election Day. As the Washington Post noted, McEnany then made the opposite argument -- during the same interview -- about votes in Arizona.
The White House press secretary said Republicans expect "a very good drop" of pro-Trump ballots in Arizona, while moments later questioning similar ballot-counts in Pennsylvania. Or put another way, the president and his team support including vote "drops," except when they don't, depending on whether they think it might help the GOP incumbent maintain power.
Is it any wonder the president's followers are chanting contradictory messages?

It’s easy enough for the Trump campaign to file a lawsuit claiming improprieties, but a lot harder to provide evidence of wrongdoing or a convincing legal argument. Here’s what you need to know as the election lawsuits start to mount.

A hearing on Wednesday in an election case captured in miniature the challenge for the Trump campaign as it gears up for what could become an all-out legal assault on presidential election results in key swing states: It’s easy enough to file a lawsuit claiming improprieties — in this case, that Pennsylvania had violated the law by allowing voters whose mail-in ballots were defective to correct them — but a lot harder to provide evidence of wrongdoing or a convincing legal argument. “I don’t understand how the integrity of the election was affected,” said U.S. District Judge Timothy Savage, something he repeated several times during the hearing. (However the judge rules, the case is unlikely to have a significant effect; only 93 ballots are at issue, a county election official said.)
Levitt said judges by and large have ignored the noise of the race and the bluster of President Donald Trump’s Twitter feed. “They’ve actually demanded facts and haven’t been ruling on all-caps claims of fraud or suppression,” Levitt said. “They haven’t confused public relations with the predicate for litigation, and I would expect that to continue.”
If Levitt is right, that may augur poorly for the legal challenges to the presidential election. Either way, the number of cases is starting to rapidly increase. But lawsuits will do little good unless, as in the 2000 presidential election, the race winds up being so close that it comes down to a very thin margin of votes in one or more must-win states.

Outrage After Postal Service Misses Court-Ordered Election Day Deadline. "It's how we all thought they would do it. It's what they said they wouldn't do. And it's exactly what they are doing."

Election experts and other critics of voter suppression responded with alarm Tuesday after the United States Postal Service failed to meet a court-ordered afternoon deadline to conduct sweeps at mail processing facilities to "ensure that no ballots have been held up and that any identified ballots are immediately sent out for delivery."
Earlier Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan of the District of Columbia had ordered the sweeps between 12:30 pm and 3:00 pm ET, and set a 4:30 pm ET deadline for facilities to file a status update. John Kruzel, a reporter at The Hill, tweeted Tuesday afternoon that the USPS failed to comply, in spite of saying this week that about 300,000 ballots had entered the mail sorting system but lacked a delivery scan.
In response to Kruzel's long tweet thread, Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr. (D-N.J.) took aim at the postmaster general, tweeting: "Haul Louis DeJoy in front of a criminal grand jury."
Journalist Ari Berman, who has extensively covered voting rights in the United States, similarly declared that "Louis DeJoy should be held in contempt of court and face criminal charges for obstructing an election if these ballots are not delivered on time."
Berman noted that mail delays have gotten worse in the lead-up to Election Day. For months, voting rights advocates have slammed DeJoy—a GOP megadonor who took over the Postal Service earlier this year—for forcing mail operations changes that critics charge were intended in part to sabotage the November election.

Centrist Democrats talk leadership changes after negative election results

Stung by their party’s dispiriting showing at the polls Tuesday, two moderate House Democrats say they and other centrists are privately discussing a plan that was unthinkable just 24 hours earlier: throwing their support behind a challenger to Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).
The two Democrats told The Hill on Wednesday that they were reaching out to their colleagues about backing one of Pelosi’s top lieutenants, House Democratic Caucus Chairman Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.), for Speaker in the next Congress.

Stung by their party’s dispiriting showing at the polls Tuesday, two moderate House Democrats say they and other centrists are privately discussing a plan that was unthinkable just 24 hours earlier: throwing their support behind a challenger to Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).
The two Democrats told The Hill on Wednesday that they were reaching out to their colleagues about backing one of Pelosi’s top lieutenants, House Democratic Caucus Chairman Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.), for Speaker in the next Congress.
“He’s the only one prepared and positioned” to be Speaker, said one of the Democratic lawmakers. “He bridges moderates and progressives better than anyone. And most importantly, he’s not Nancy Pelosi.”
