Restaurant Flooded With Business After Launching an ‘Adopt a Doc or Nurse’ Catering Service

A California restaurant has found a compassionate way of keeping their business open while simultaneously caring for hospital staffers fighting the novel coronavirus outbreaks.

In addition to continuing their takeout and delivery services, the Tootsie’s restaurant at the Stanford Mall in Palo Alto has been using their catering services to feed doctors and nurses at their local hospitals.

Since Tootsie’s owner Rocco Scordella launched his ingenious “Adopt a Doctor or Nurse” program earlier this month, community members have commissioned his restaurant to prepare and serve more than 2,000 meals to various hospital departments in the Bay Area.

“Even the first day was 750 requests. I was like oh my,” Scordella told KRON News. “I’m gonna be busier than when I’m actually open so its good. It’s really good to see the community coming in.”

Not only has his catering program been helping to feed hospital personnel during the COVID-19 outbreaks, the influx in business has also helped Scordella to rehire a number of staffers who he had been forced to lay off at the start of the shutdowns.

He now hopes that other businesses around the world will implement the Adopt a Nurse or Doc program in their own restaurants as a means of support hospital workers during the pandemic.

Michigan governor says vendors 'being told not to send stuff' to her state -- after Trump bashed her

So if you're sick in Michigan, lotsa luck. Unreal. The giant baby is on his way to getting more people killed.

Michigan governor says vendors ‘being told not to send stuff’ to her state — after Trump bashed her

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Friday made a startling claim that medical supply vendors are “being told” to avoid sending badly needed gear to her state in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic.

During an interview with local station WWJ News Radio, Whitmer detailed how her state has had difficulty in securing supplies to help hospitals cope with the influx of COVID-19 patients.

“What I’ve gotten back is that vendors with whom we’ve procured contracts — they’re being told not to send stuff to Michigan,” she said. “It’s really concerning, I reached out to the White House last night and asked for a phone call with the president.”

At the time that she called the White House, Trump was attacking her during an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, in which the president accused her of being insufficiently grateful for his assistance.

“We’ve had a big problem with the young — a woman governor,” Trump said. “You know who I’m talking about — from Michigan. We don’t like to see the complaints. […] She doesn’t get it done, and we send her a lot. Now, she wants a declaration of emergency, and, you know, we’ll have to make a decision on that. But Michigan is a very important state. I love the people of Michigan.”

Trump Is Haggling Over Ventilator Prices While Coronavirus Patients Die

Trump Is Haggling Over Ventilator Prices While Coronavirus Patients Die
By Jonathan Chait

Hospitals in New York, Detroit, and Atlanta are at or above their capacity, with growing numbers of coronavirus patients pouring in. Hospital staff and governors are begging for more protective equipment and ventilators. The Trump administration, after doing nothing for weeks to prepare, is still refusing to treat the matter with the proper urgency.

The New York Times reports the Trump administration was set to order a crash production of ventilators from General Motors and Ventec Life Systems. Then the administration paused the deal. “Some government officials,” reports the Times, “expressed concern about the possibility of ordering too many ventilators, leaving them with an expensive surplus.”

Too many ventilators. It sounds insane that the Trump administration would be concerned that it would be left with a supply of excess machine when, at the moment, governors are pleading with them to send as many machines, as quickly as possible before bodies begin piling up in American cities.

Yet, as incomprehensible as this sentiment may be, Trump himself is now saying the same thing in public
. In a Thursday night interview with Sean Hannity, Trump dismissed the pleas for more ventilators by governors like Andrew Cuomo. “A lot of equipment is being asked for that I don’t think they will need,” Trump said. “I have a feeling that a lot of the numbers that are being said in some areas are just bigger than they are going to be. I don’t believe you need 40,000 or 30,000 ventilators. You know, you go to major hospitals, sometimes they’ll have two ventilators. And now all of a sudden they’re saying, ‘Can we order 30,000 ventilators?’”

snip//

Maybe Trump is right. Maybe the coronavirus will not prove as deadly as public-health officials and hospitals warn, and maybe the desperate pleas by New York and other states for more ventilators will prove unnecessary. But it seems quite likely that the Trump administration is haggling over relatively trivial sums, denying a crisis, and sending Americans whose lives might have been spared to horrible deaths.

850 Florida healthcare workers urge Gov. Ron DeSantis: 'Act now'

850 Florida healthcare workers urge Gov. Ron DeSantis: ‘Act now’
Their letter pleads for a statewide shelter-in-place order, among other directives.

More than 800 Florida healthcare workers have signed an open letter to Gov. Ron DeSantis in which they urge the governor to take stronger action to slow the spread of coronavirus on several fronts, including issuing an immediate statewide shelter-in-place order.

The letter, released Friday, had 859 signatures as of 10:15 a.m.

“We are the healthcare workers on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic in Florida and we urge you to act dramatically to mitigate the spread of the disease, protect and support healthcare workers, and ensure that patients have access to all necessary medical and social services during this crisis," it begins. "Health systems around the world are being stretched dangerously thin and we are not far behind.”

Among its seven points, it pleads for a shelter-in-place order as “the only hope of limiting peak incidence and overall mortality rates, as can be seen empirically from other countries.”

A spokeswoman for DeSantis said Friday that she was not aware of the open letter until a Tampa Bay Times reporter told her about it.

The letter also asks DeSantis to direct commercially produced personal protective equipment — masks, respirators, gowns, gloves — straight to healthcare workers and to ask manufacturers to create those supplies.

Nearly 300 people in Iran have been killed after drinking a toxic chemical in the mistaken belief that it would save them from the coronavirus, according to local reports from the country. The Associated Press reports that thousands of Iranians have been chugging toxic methanol—an industrial alcohol—on the completely false basis that it protects people against the virus. News of the fake cure has reportedly spread like wildfire across social media in Iran, and people are deeply suspicious of official government advice not to drink methanol because it downplayed the virus crisis for days before it overwhelmed the country. Iranian media report nearly 300 people have been killed and more than 1,000 sickened by drinking methanol, and AP reported one case of a 5-year-old boy who was blinded after his parents gave him the poison. As of now, there is no known cure for COVID-19.

The U.S. Army said Thursday that more than 9,000 retired soldiers in healthcare fields had expressed interest in coming back on active duty to help with the response to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

"The initial response has been very positive," the service said in an emailed statement.

The Army sent notifications on Wednesday to more than 800,000 former soldiers to gauge their willingness to help with the response to COVID-19 as cases have surged over the past week in the United States.

This is how Kelowna dealt with the Spanish flu pandemic in 1918
"In order to prevent the spread of Spanish Influenza all schools, public and private, churches, theatres, moving picture halls, pool rooms and other places of amusement, and lodge meetings, are to be closed until further notice."

While the coronavirus is unprecedented in the modern era, the world has seen similar circumstances – such as the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918.

A public notice from the City of Kelowna on Oct. 19, 1918 stated: "In order to prevent the spread of Spanish Influenza all schools, public and private, churches, theatres, moving picture halls, pool rooms and other places of amusement, and lodge meetings, are to be closed until further notice. All public gatherings consisting of ten or more are prohibited."

The Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 killed an estimated 50 to 100 million people, roughly six times the number of soldiers who died in World War I.

Not This Grandma
By Connie Schultz

My, these aging men with their bright ideas.

First, it was the president, who has been openly contradicting medical experts with his pining for an early end to social distancing. This would threaten the lives of millions of Americans during the pandemic. Oh, well.

As he said, via tweet and at the microphone, "We cannot let the cure be worse than the problem itself." Every time he says that, I can't help feeling that women like me — over 60 and eternally over him — are on his checklist of things that can go.

It's not sitting well, I have to tell you.

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, on the verge of 70, spelled it out for us in an interview on Fox.

"No one reached out to me and said, 'As a senior citizen, are you willing to take a chance on your survival in exchange for keeping the America that all America loves for your children and grandchildren?' And if that's the exchange, I'm all in."

He added: "I just think there are a lot of grandparents out there in this country like me — I have six grandchildren — that's what we care about. ... And I want to live smart and see through this, but I don't want the whole country to be sacrificed. And that's what I see."

I don't know who he's looking at, but it sure isn't this grandma to seven grandchildren. I would throw myself in front of a 137,000-pound Montana B-Train to save the life of a grandchild, but I will not risk a single hangnail to rescue corporate America.

snip//

I'm sorry these men hate their lives. I can't name a single grandmother of my acquaintance who wants to throw away her life to save companies like Hobby Lobby, which has insisted on remaining open during this pandemic.

The craft company also told its managers to "make every effort to continue working the employees" while denying those same employees sick leave. Billionaire owner David Green is big on touting his right-wing version of Christianity, so we'll see how that goes.

I'm with the House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wing of Christianity. She said this after Congress passed the stimulus package:

"I wish that every person in America would subscribe to the fact that science is an answer to our prayers so that we can get through this in a very positive way."

She's a grandmother, by the way, and what a fine example she is setting in not volunteering for the Trump-Patrick-Beck cliff leap.

Regular readers will notice that I've been quoting poetry a lot in the last few weeks, and wouldn't you know it? I've got another poem. This excerpt is from the late poet Grace Paley's "Here," about an old woman watching her old man in the yard:

at last a woman

in the old style sitting

stout thighs apart under

a big skirt grandchild sliding

on off my lap a pleasant

summer perspiration

that's my old man across the yard

he's talking to the meter reader

he's telling the world's sad story

how electricity is oil or uranium

and so forth I tell my grandson

run over to your grandpa. ask him

to sit beside me for a minute. I

am suddenly exhausted by my desire

to kiss his sweet explaining lips

Mercy.

Silly old men can cling to whatever economy-themed fantasies make them feel useful in the world.

I've got other plans, if God's up for it. I want my grandchildren to know that for them, Grandma lived.

A disgrace in the richest country in the world

Because this administration refused to listen to the experts and decided they didn’t need to prepare we are now letting people die for lack of protective gear for medical personnel:

snip//

“Is there sufficient personal protective equipment for healthcare workers who are providing medical care?” the playbook instructs its readers, as one early decision that officials should address when facing a potential pandemic. “If YES: What are the triggers to signal exhaustion of supplies? Are additional supplies available? If NO: Should the Strategic National Stockpile release PPE to states?”

The strategies are among hundreds of tactics and key policy decisions laid out in a 69-page National Security Council playbook on fighting pandemics,
which POLITICO is detailing for the first time. Other recommendations include that the government move swiftly to fully detect potential outbreaks, secure supplemental funding and consider invoking the Defense Production Act — all steps in which the Trump administration lagged behind the timeline laid out in the playbook.

“Each section of this playbook includes specific questions that should be asked and decisions that should be made at multiple levels” within the national security apparatus, the playbook urges, repeatedly advising officials to question the numbers on viral spread, ensure appropriate diagnostic capacity and check on the U.S. stockpile of emergency resources.

The playbook also stresses the significant responsibility facing the White House to contain risks of potential pandemics, a stark contrast with the Trump administration’s delays in deploying an all-of-government response and President Donald Trump’s recent signals that he might roll back public health recommendations.

“The U.S. government will use all powers at its disposal to prevent, slow or mitigate the spread of an emerging infectious disease threat,” according to the playbook’s built-in “assumptions” about fighting future threats. “The American public will look to the U.S. government for action when multi-state or other significant events occur.”

The guide further calls for a “unified message” on the federal response, in order to best manage the American public’s questions and concerns. “Early coordination of risk communications through a single federal spokesperson is critical,” the playbook urges. However, the U.S. response to coronavirus has featured a rotating cast of spokespeople and conflicting messages; Trump already is discussing loosening government recommendations on coronavirus in order to “open” the economy by Easter, despite the objections of public health advisers.

The NSC devised the guide — officially called the Playbook for Early Response to High-Consequence Emerging Infectious Disease Threats and Biological Incidents, but known colloquially as “the pandemic playbook” — across 2016. The project was driven by career civil servants as well as political appointees, aware that global leaders had initially fumbled their response to the 2014-2015 spread of Ebola and wanting to be sure that the next response to an epidemic was better handled.

The Trump administration was briefed on the playbook’s existence in 2017, said four former officials, but two cautioned that it never went through a full, National Security Council-led interagency process to be approved as Trump administration strategy. Tom Bossert, who was then Trump’s homeland security adviser, expressed enthusiasm about its potential as part of the administration’s broader strategy to fight pandemics, two former officials said.

Trump’s only real method of decision-making when he came into office was to ignore or reverse anything the previous administration did. He was so unprepared and unfit that he didn’t know anything else to do.

Now we are in a crisis and he is totally at sea. And Americans are dying.
