Kevin Drum
In the past few days Donald Trump has:
Turned mask wearing into a culture war campaign issue
Accused a TV host of murdering an intern
Declared war on voting by mail
Insisted that James Comey and a variety of others should be in jail
Pushed an absurd unmasking non-scandal
Insisted that Barack Obama personally led a spying campaign against him
Retweeted a video saying the only good Democrat is a dead Democrat
Retweeted QAnon conspiracy theories
All of this has happened in the midst of an enormous pandemic which should be occupying all his time. Instead hes virtually ignoring it because he cant figure out what to do aside from handing it over to his son-in-law and then hauling out his iPhone to tweet about something he heard on Fox & Friends.
Is Trump mentally unstable? I dont know. But hes sure not mentally all there, is he? What kind of leader decides he can just shut his eyes to a deadly pandemic and instead spend all his time plotting revenge on enemies both real and imagined? Only a mentally deranged one. When will the Republican Party finally realize just what kind of trouble theyve gotten us into?

Texas Supreme Court: Voters dont qualify for mail-in ballots due to lack of COVID immunity

The Texas Supreme Court ruled Wednesday afternoon that a lack of immunity to the novel coronavirus does not make a voter eligible for a mail-in ballot under Texas law.
Attorney General Ken Paxton had asked the states highest civil court to weigh in on the issue to prevent local election officials in some of Texas largest counties from processing mail-in ballots for voters who cite the disability category and normally would not qualify.
While the court agreed with Paxton that a lack of immunity to the virus alone would not qualify a voter for a mail-in ballot, they declined to order local election officials to investigate mail-in ballot applications they have received and said there is no evidence election officials have processed faulty ones.

From Republican George Conway:
FB post via The WatchFrog...
From Republican George Conway:
For the record NO ONE is blaming the President for the virus. Let me repeat. Coronavirus is not Trumps fault.
Heres a detailed list of what we are blaming him for:
* Trump declined to use the World Health Organizations test like other nations. Back in January, over a month before the first Co-vid19 case, the Chinese posted a new mysterious virus and within a week, Berlin virologists had produced the first diagnostic test. By the end of February, the WHO had shipped out tests to 60 countries. Oh, but not our government. We declined the test even as a temporary bridge until the CDC could create its own test. The question is why? We dont know but what to look for is which pharmaceutical company eventually manufactures the test and who owns the stock. Keep tuned.
* In 2018 Trump fired Homeland Security Advisor Tom Bossart, whose job was to coordinate a response to global pandemics. He was not replaced.
* In 2018 Dr. Luciana Borio, the NSC director for medical and bio-defense preparedness left the job. Trump did not replace Dr. Borio.
* In 2019 the NSCs Senior Director for Global Health Security and bio-defense, Tim Ziemer, left the position and Trump did not replace the Rear Admiral.
* Trump shut down the entire Global Health Security and Bio-defense agency. Yes, he did.
* Amid the explosive worldwide outbreak of the virus Trump proposed a 19% cut to the budget of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention plus a 10% cut to Public Health Services and a 7% cut to Global Health Services. Those happen to be the organizations that responds to public health threats.
* In 2018, at Trumps direction, the CDC stopped funding epidemic prevention activities in 39 out of 49 countries including China.
* Trump didnt appoint a doctor to oversee the US response to the pandemic. He appointed Mike Pence.
* Trump has on multiple occasions sowed doubt about the severity of the virus even using the word hoax at events and rallies. He even did it at an event where the virus was being spread. Trump has put out zero useful information concerning the health risks of the virus.
* Trump pretended the virus had been contained.
* Trump left a cruise ship at sea for days, denying them proper hospital care, rather than increase his numbers in America.
Repeat. We do not blame Trump for the virus. We blame him for gutting the nations preparations to deal with it. We blame him for bungling testing and allowing it to spread uninhibited. We blame him for wasting taxpayer money on applause lines at his rallies (like The Wall). We blame him for putting his own political life over American human life. I hope this clears things up."

Pompeo tells Congress Hong Kong is no longer autonomous from China

Pompeo tells Congress Hong Kong is no longer autonomous from China
Zachary Basu
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement Wednesday that he has certified to Congress that Hong Kong is no longer autonomous from China and does not warrant special treatment under U.S. law.
Why it matters: Revoking Hong Kong's special status would hasten its economic and financial decline, already set in motion by China's growing political grip on the city. The preferential status that the U.S. has long granted Hong Kong has made the city a top U.S. trading partner.
The big picture: The Chinese Communist Party last week unveiled a sweeping new security law that will criminalize sedition, foreign influence and secession in Hong Kong. The move and the subsequent reaction from the U.S. has put the once semi-autonomous city's status as one of Asia's largest financial hubs at risk.
More than 1,300 U.S. companies have operations in Hong Kong, and around 80,000 U.S. citizens currently reside in the city.
The backstory: Hong Kong has operated under its own legal system since the U.K. returned the colony to China in 1997. People and businesses there have lived and operated far more freely than would be possible in mainland China.
What to watch: White House national security adviser Robert O'Brien said on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday that if Pompeo is unable to certify Hong Kong's autonomy, the U.S. will impose sanctions on China and Hong Kong.
What they're saying:
Hong Kong and its dynamic, enterprising, and free people have flourished for decades as a bastion of liberty, and this decision gives me no pleasure. But sound policy making requires a recognition of reality. While the United States once hoped that free and prosperous Hong Kong would provide a model for authoritarian China, it is no clear that China is modeling Hong Kong after itself.
The United States stands with the people of Hong Kong as they struggle against the CCPs increasing denial of the autonomy that they were promised.

The Vietnam War was once considered among the worst American catastrophes of the past century, with a little more than 58,000 dead Americans (and countless Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Laotian people). Sept. 11 scarred the nation for a generation, with a little over 3,000 dead. And all of that pales in comparison to the current pandemic, which will soon equal two Vietnam Wars.
Hapless deer-in-headlights and impeached President Donald Trump cant decide how to handle the pandemic. No, not the responding to the pandemic partthat part he gave up on from the very beginning. No, he cant decide who to blame. But whether its Democrats or his intelligence agencies or the Chinese, one simple reality cuts through it all: A presidents No. 1 job is to keep Americans safe, and hes failed that to a degree we havent seen in more than a century. He has objectively failed, and done so in historic, catastrophic fashion.
snip//
But what is his current favorite excuse for our nations mass death event? Something-something its Chinas fault.
Whatever mistakes China made (and no one will claim the country handled the spread of the virus with the necessary competence and transparency), the fact is we had plenty of warning to prepare for COVID 19s arrival. But from disbanding the pandemic preparedness task force, to ignoring the pandemic playbook left behind by the Obama administration, to gutting the CDC and FEMA, to using his bully pulpit to spread misinformation and undermine the nations response, Trump very much rolled out a red carpet for national infestation, economic devastation, and death.
Put another way: Trump didn't keep us safe.
He didnt keep us safe from an act of God.
And if you want to believe that its Chinas fault, he also didnt keep us safe from their actions.
snip//
Its quite remarkable that a guy who spends all day watching TV and all weekend golfing during a mass-death event cant fathom that it might cost him at the ballot box. But thats where we appear to be heading.
And its well-deserved. A failure of this magnitude deserves the most resounding YOURE FIRED the nation can muster. It wouldnt undo the damage hes done, but it would still offer some measure of satisfaction.

UA student: My grandmother deserved better than 'goodbye' through a window
UA student: My grandmother deserved better than 'goodbye' through a window
As coronavirus took my grandmother, I screamed 'I love you' through the window of her Tucson nursing home
By Anika Pasilis Special to the Arizona Daily Star May 17, 2020
The following is the opinion and analysis of the writer:

Im sorry for your loss, a million and one people have told me. I cant accept that. It wasnt just my loss, it was everyones.
Sally wasnt the milk and cookies kind of grandma. Until very recently, she very rarely told me, I love you. Instead, she took me on grand adventures around Tucson. Together, we swam like fish in the pool and watched the sun burst into thousands of colors across the sky.
Before she was a grandmother, she was a freedom rider. In her youth, she was beaten and arrested by the police for protesting.
I once saw a girl with all her teeth kicked out, she recalled. I was afraid that would happen to me, too. Thankfully, she kept her teeth but spent a good amount of time in jail.
One of the most triumphant moments of her life was when she and her fellow freedom riders went to a church and the congregants all stood and cheered. She said Oprah wanted to interview her, but she didnt want to be on television.

House Republicans to sue Nancy Pelosi in effort to block proxy voting

20 House Republicans plan to file a lawsuit late Tuesday against Speaker Nancy Pelosi in an effort to block the chamber's new proxy voting system amid the coronavirus pandemic, three congressional sources tell Axios.
The big picture: The lawsuit, led by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, alleges the rules are unconstitutional because the Constitution requires a quorum, or a majority, of lawmakers to be physically present in order to conduct business. The lawsuit was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.
No Republicans voted in favor of the temporary remote voting.
What they're saying: "Our guidance is either vote in person if you can or, if unable to travel to be physically present, use the other options already available to House members to make your position known," one GOP aide told reporters on Tuesday.
The state of play: GOP aides say they do not expect the suit to be able to stop proxy voting this week.
"We believe the majority rule is unconstitutional. And so, the remedy there is for us to go to court and ask for them to confirm our reading of the Constitution, and that will take a little bit of time," a second Republican aide said.
