If any other public figure regularly stumbled onto the stage clearly drugged to the gills, it would be a major scandal. But somehow Donald Trump can appear over and over, sniffling at the end of each sentence and slurring his words as if hes downed a fifth of Wild Turkey, and not one news network will mention not only that Trumps speech was full of white supremacist rhetoric and an endless stream of lies, but that he was having such trouble simply reading that his words often had to be interpreted from context.
Not that it rally mattered. A Republican Congress, still nervous that it hadnt licked his boots sufficiently, stood to applaud with even more frequency than Trump snorted. Game show stunts. Huzzah! Failing government schools. Huzzah! Medal of freedom sullied forever. Double huzzah!
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi rippling up the pages was far more courtesy than this toilet stain of a speech deserved.
Remember what a disaster America was under Barack Obama? You know, when the economy was growing faster, millions more people had health care, the environment was protected, and the deficit was a trillion dollars smaller? Yeah, that hellscape.
But just as the tea party movement sprang into existence on a raft of instant amnesia over George W. Bush plunging the nation into economic disaster and endless war (plus racism), Trump spent much of his speech pushing the idea that he had pulled America from the dark ages racism pun intended. In fact, racism wasnt an add-on to Trumps speech; it was a theme, especially when it came to repeated claims about criminal illegal aliens.
In the real world, factory output is down, tariffs are costing the economy billions, and farm bankruptcies are up over 50% in just two years. But Trump is a creature who laces his speeches not only with lies, but also with fantasies about his messianic effect. If not for Trump, all factories would be gone, the stock market would have crashed, and Iowa would be having a second dust bowl. Evidence? None required.

Pelosi Statement on State of the Union Address

Pelosi Statement on State of the Union Address
February 4, 2020
Press Release
Washington, D.C. Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after President Trump delivered his State of the Union Address:
However, President Trumps address tonight gave no comfort to the 130 million Americans with pre-existing conditions or the families struggling to afford the prescription drugs they need. Once again, President Trump was not truthful about his actions in court to destroy pre-existing condition protections. Once again, President Trump pulled his punch on his promise to negotiate for lower prescription drug prices, which House Democrats delivered with the Elijah E. Cummings Lower Drug Costs Now Act, H.R.3.
Next week, when the President presents his budget, the American people will see the stark reality of his agenda. A federal budget should be a statement of our national values, and the President has sadly shown that he does not value the good health of the American people. Democrats continue to urge the President to abandon his assault on seniors and families and to join us to deliver real progress in lowering the price of prescription drugs and making the bold investments needed to rebuild Americas infrastructure in a green and modern way.
"The manifesto of mistruths presented in page after page of the address tonight should be a call to action for everyone who expects truth from the President and policies worthy of his office and the American people. The American people expect and deserve a President to have integrity and respect for the aspirations for their children.
Americans were uplifted by the positive message and vision for progress for all communicated by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Congresswoman Veronica Escobar of Texas. In the election, Democrats ran and won on a pledge For The People: lower health care costs, bigger paychecks, clean up corruption in government. And we will continue to be relentless in our pursuit of progress for hard-working families across America, For The People."

Conservatives slammed CNN White House correspondent Jim Acosta for his reaction to President Trump awarding the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Rush Limbaugh.
Fox News host Laura Ingraham, a friend of Limbaugh, was outraged over Acosta's accusation, calling the CNN personality "disgusting."
"That's right," her guest Republican Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise said.

NAACP Blast Trumps State of the Union as a False and Dangerous Narrative
February 5, 2020
BALTIMORE (February 4, 2020) The NAACP issued the following statement regarding President Trumps State of the Union Address:
The ill-effects of Trumps policies and careless behavior do the most harm to the political and social power of communities of color. His failure to confront the plight of all communities (the poor, LBGTQIA, women and immigrants) is without question one of the gravest threats to this countrys promise, liberty and justice for all. Tonight during his speech, we witnessed him take pride in appointing the least qualified and least diverse judges with many remaining in the pipeline. The judges he has appointed are committed to setting back the progress that has been accomplished through our fight for justice, liberation, and equity. The lip service he provided the American people tonight only serves to keep distinct communities suppressed and constrained, both politically and socially. While spewing false narratives to cover up his manipulative and violative behavior, he created irreparable chaos and sullied our nations ability to progress toward the ideals of inclusivity and parity. While he touts a low unemployment rate, the truth is that Black unemployment is still twice as high as that of Whites. His ability to twist the narrative to favor himself is fraught with narcissism.
President Trumps address tonight was nothing more than a distraction from the real issue: our democracy is at stake due to his divisive actions and belief that he is above the law. He is emboldened by elected officials that condone his behavior through their silence. Protecting our democracy is our elected leaders most significant responsibility. Trump and his party have failed to do that. From asking a foreign nation to help him sabotage our election to telling four congresswomen to go back to where they came from, his actions stoke the flames of anti-unity, anti-immigration, and anti-equality. His brazenness to utter the words, We must always remember to put America first when he has placed our nation in the very hands of adversaries that seek to upend our democracy speaks to his duplicitous nature.
As we enter a critical season, we will continue to fight against this Presidents attempts to impede our civil rights, dispel the growing threat of environmental issues, and divide our country along racial lines. The culmination of our efforts will aid in the progression of our democracy and change the trajectory of this nation for the better.

Even worse is Maine's own anthropomorphic bowl of Jello, Sen. Susan Collins. Her reasoning for not voting to remove Trump from office is as delusional as someone investing in a Trump University education: "I believe the president has learned from this case...The president has been impeached. That's a pretty big lesson...I believe he will be much more cautious in the future." I'm cynical enough to think that Collins knows this is unrepentant bullshit, but if she really believes this, then, seriously, someone should introduce her to Donald Trump because that asshole has never felt chastened and the only "lesson" he's learned is "Say you're right loud enough and often enough and everyone will agree just to make you shut the fuck up about it."
Tennessee's Lamar Alexander, one of those fake moderates you occasionally hear about but only see as unreal Bigfoot-like blurs running past the Capitol, tried to sound rational in his declaration of Trumpian exoneration. Look at this bastard try to thread a rusty needle: "It was inappropriate for the president to ask a foreign leader to investigate his political opponent and to withhold United States aid to encourage that investigation. When elected officials inappropriately interfere with such investigations, it undermines the principle of equal justice under the law. But the Constitution does not give the Senate the power to remove the president from office and ban him from this years ballot simply for actions that are inappropriate."
Actually, the Constitution gives the Senate the power to remove a president if it agrees with the House and convicts that president, even for, you know, "misdemeanors." But look at that shit. Alexander says that Trump was undermining "the principle of equal justice under the law." That's pretty fucking significant. And he added, just to sound like he's a thoughtful, dignified statesman instead of the elderly errand boy for a bloated, mad, ignorant dictator-in-waiting, "The framers believed that there should never, ever be a partisan impeachment." There were no goddamn political parties when the Constitution was written. Fucking hell.
Alexander bemoans the "partisan" nature of the House vote for the articles of impeachment, yet, weirdly, doesn't seem to have any problem with witnesses being blocked from testifying by a vote of just Republicans. Apparently, "partisan" only means "Democrats."
We are moving into a degradation of this country's checks and balances the likes of which we haven't seen. Sometimes I think it's more important for Democrats to take back the Senate than it is to win the presidency. That way, Democrats can assert the power of the Legislative Branch in full and restore some kind of fuckin' balance.

While Colllins said Trumps actions were improper and demonstrated very poor judgment, she concluded they did not meet the threshold for removal from office.
Said Collins: I do not believe that the House has met its burden of showing that the presidents conduct, however flawed, warrants the extreme step of immediate removal from office, nor does the record support the assertion by the House managers that the president must not remain in office one moment longer.
Collins to CBS News: I believe that the president has learned from this case. The president has been impeached. Thats a pretty big lesson.

I think we ought to go sit down in a courtroom and present this as evidence of how whoever [put on the halftime show] is keeping me from getting into the kingdom of Heaven.
Could I go into a courtroom and say, Viewing what you put on that screen put me in danger of hellfire? Could the court say, That doesnt apply here because the right to [produce] porn overrides your right to [not] watch it? Yeah, well, you didnt tell me I was gonna watch it!
You just brought it into my living room. You didnt tell me there were gonna be crotch shots! Thats discriminatory against the value I have in my house. You cant just do that. I wanna sue them for about $867 trillion. Christian web host Dave Daubenmire.

Rand Paul reads alleged whistleblower's name on Senate floor
"The law does not preserve anonymity," the Kentucky senator says.
By KYLE CHENEY
02/04/2020 01:16 PM EST
Sen. Rand Paul used the Senate floor on Tuesday to read aloud the name of an intelligence community official alleged to be the whistleblower who first raised alarms about President Donald Trump's conduct toward Ukraine.
Chief Justice John Roberts denied the Kentucky Republicans attempts to mention the persons identity last week during the question-and-answer portion of Trumps impeachment trial. And Paul said he didn't intend to out the alleged whistleblower or stoke reprisals against the person.
But he used the final deliberations of the impeachment trial to name the person, who has been identified in Trump-allied media as the alleged whistleblower.
In using the person's name on the Senate floor, Paul went further than any other House or Senate Republican, even those who have fiercely demanded that Democrats unmask the whistleblower, who they accuse of starting the groundswell of charges that led to Trump's impeachment. When Paul sought to have Roberts read his question during a two-day round of inquiries Roberts refused, saying, "The presiding officer declines to read the question."

The Senate Impeachment Vote Is "Truth Matters" Vs. "Nothing Matters"

Republicans prepare to vote for acquittal, and for nihilism.

In his closing remarks Monday, Schiff took aim at that mentality. America believes in a thing called truth, he said. She does not believe we are entitled to our own alternative facts. She recoils at those who spread pernicious falsehoods. To her, truth matters. There is nothing more corrosive to a democracy than the idea that here is no truth.
This speech bears similarity to the arguments made by government prosecutors in the November trial of Trump associate Roger Stone. who was convicted of lying to Congress about his contacts with WikiLeaks regarding Democratic emails hacked by Russia. In a closing argument to jurors then, Assistant US Attorney Michael Marando told jurors that you can find any political view you want and your own truth online, but in our institutions of self governance, courts of law or committee hearings, where people have to testify under oath, truth still matters.
Truth matters. Mardondo made it a refrain during the trial, and it was so effective that one juror used the phrase in a Washington Post op-ed to explain Stones conviction.
That Schiff made similar arguments Monday is not a coincidence. He led House Democrats investigation into the Trump campaigns ties to Russia, and he faulted Trump on Friday for encouraging and accepting Russian help in the 2016 election and then lying about it. Like federal prosecutors who investigated the TrumpRussia scandal and who indicted Stone and a handful of other former Trump aides for making false statements about their contacts with Russia, Schiff has been at pains to highlight the pernicious effect of the rampant dishonesty of Trump and his circle. Schiff on Monday implored GOP senators to assert values distinct from mere partisan loyalty to Trump.
Schiffs argument is not going to convince 20 Republicans to vote to convict Trump. It may not convince any. But along with Cipollones closing, it will help define the votes that senators cast on Wednesday. Do Senate Republicans agree that Trump did nothing wrong? Is he who they are? Watch how they vote.
