House Republicans To Block $2,000 Stimulus Checks On Christmas Eve

House Republicans To Block $2,000 Stimulus Checks On Christmas Eve

House Republicans plan to object to a unanimous consent request to pass $2,000 stimulus checks for every

Jake Sherman reported in the PM Politico Playbook, “You can’t bring something up by unanimous consent unless it’s cleared by the minority leadership. The $2,000 checks won’t get cleared by the GOP leadership, per several sources familiar with the planning. Republican lawmakers are already worked up about the prospect of boosting the direct payment amount, according to several phone calls we got this morning. So the brief union of TRUMP and PELOSI on the $2,000 check thing looks like it’s not going to fly — it will be ruled out of order by whoever is presiding over the floor, per sources we spoke to this morning. (Caveat: It could change, but seems unlikely to.) They may try to force this vote several times over the next two weeks.”

House Republicans may change their minds and realize that denying vital aid to people struggling during the pandemic on Christmas Eve is not a good look, but it appears that the message that Kevin McCarthy and his caucus want to send to the American people is that they don’t care about your suffering.

Trump is threatening to block the $600 stimulus checks, and Republicans refuse to agree to $2,000 stimulus checks in the House. Republicans remind everyone that their core mission in Washington remains to make life worse for as many Americans as possible.

Trump May Have Cost Mitch McConnell The Senate With His Stimulus Check Sabotage

Trump May Have Cost Mitch McConnell The Senate With His Stimulus Check Sabotage
Trump wiped out Mitch McConnell’s talking point that Loeffler/Perdue delivered pandemic relief and gave Democrats a powerful issue 12 days before the Georgia Senate runoffs.

It is the worst kept secret in American politics that Mitch McConnell only supported stimulus checks because he was trying to prop up Georgia Senate Republican incumbent runoff candidates Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue.

Trump is angry at McConnell for not helping him overturn the election and for trying to squash a challenge of the results on the Senate floor.

The President’s call for $2,000 stimulus checks was his way of trying to hurt Mitch McConnell, but it has already backfired.

As Greg Sargent noted in The Washington Post, “The hidden beauty of this is that it destroys the story that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) wants to tell about how we got here, a story that he hopes will salvage Loeffler, Perdue and his Senate majority. McConnell agreed to this $900 billion deal in part to save his Georgia senators, admitting that they were ‘getting hammered’ over opposition to stimulus checks. His spin now is that Republicans always wanted to offer this relief and that Democrats were the obstacle to it.”

Trump is mad at McConnell and he wants the credit for any stimulus checks to go to himself, not a couple of Republican Senators in Georgia who doesn’t care about, and has shown signs that he would like them to lose because he is bitter that Joe Biden beat him in the state.

The President has gone beyond his usual tantrums and petty grievances about his own party. He is trying to sabotage Republican hopes in Georgia because if he can’t win the state, no Republican can.

Eric Boehlert: The PizzaGate election

The PizzaGate election
GOP descends into madness
Eric Boehlert

snip//

Little did we know that not only would PizzaGate continue to mutate, but that its conspiratorial cousin QAnon would emerge, or that most astonishingly, the dark, fringe, twin-headed monsters would soon find refuge within the Republican Party.

Dozens of the conspiracy theory’s supporters became GOP congressional candidates this year, and one recently secured a spot in Congress.

Trump's treacherous campaign against election integrity has sparked delusional vigilantism:

• During Pennsylvania's protracted ballot count in November, two armed QAnon supporters were arrested near Philadelphia's convention center where votes were being tallied. The duo had traveled from Virginia and were carrying concealed weapons, and had an AR-15 style weapon in their truck. One of the men tagged QAnon “as a positive military operation” on Facebook, and suggested a judgment day was fast-approaching.

• Six right-wing militiamen were charged with plotting to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. The men cased her vacation home and made plans to blow up a nearby bridge so police could not quickly respond to the abduction.

• The office building at Michigan's state Capitol in Lansing was closed on the day that Michigan's 16 electors cast their votes for President-elect Joe Biden. Offices were shuttered due to "credible threats of violence."

• Michigan state Rep. Laurie Pohutsky says state lawmakers and their staffs receive "at least dozens" of death threats every day in the wake of Rudy Giuliani’s recent testimony before the Legislature, where he aired countless lies.

• A masked man claiming to have a bomb set fire to the office of the Spokane County Democrats in Washington this month.

• One person representing Trump's campaign in court recently retweeted a call for Biden and Kamala Harris to "confess their crimes on national TV," or be executed.

• The daughter of Georgia Republican Governor, Mark Kemp, has had to deal with demented Trump followers who have been sending, "hate-filled messages about inane false conspiracies about the death of her long-time boyfriend, who was killed in a traffic accident this month," according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Kemp refused Trump's demand that he call a special session of the Georgia state legislature so that it could overturn the state's election results.

“It’s fine to disagree on policy,” the governor told the newspaper, adding: “We’re just not going to go down the road of enticing violence.”

It's too late. The GOP already has.

"Captain Chaos strikes again."

From a friend on FB, who is also a chatty barista.

Every so often, I’ll get a customer who does this: “I’d like a 24 ounce Hawaiian salted caramel latte with a dash of French vanilla, three shots of caffeinated and one shot of decaf, no foam, extra, extra hot.” 🥤
.
Piece o’ cake. So I’ll schmooze with the customer while he watches me make it, then as I set it on the counter and say; “That’ll be $5.75,” he says “Is it possible to get that with almond milk? I’m lacto-intolerant.”
.
That’s what Trump pulled last night, only on an astronomical scale. He’s had since last spring to put his 2¢ worth in on the second round of stimulus, but he waited until the latte was brewed and steaming on the countertop before mentioning a milk alternative.
.
But with Trump, it’s never as simple as it seems. This wasn’t forgetfulness. His veto threat and subsequent demand for $2,000.00 per person against Congress’ $600.00 figure was conceived from multiple angles—NONE of which was over any actual concern he has for you and me.
.
1) First and foremost, it was a shiv between Mitch McConnell’s ribs. How DARE you congratulate Joe Biden as the president elect while I’m saying the election was rigged? I may be forced to leave next month, but if you’re not gonna support me all the way, I’m gonna leave a little puddle of pee on the Senate floor for you to wade through... just to remember me by.
.
2) Ever the populist, ever the manipulator, ever the narcissist, he tried to make *us* Mitch’s problem. ‘Mitch wants to give you $600.00, I want to give you more than three times that. Whose side are you on?’ As my dearly departed lawyer friend used to say; the turd is now in McConnell’s pocket, and it’s starting to stink.
.
In defense of my occasional forgetful customers, hey, it happens. Some of it is even my own fault for being such a chatty barista. And at six bucks down the drain, it’s not the end of the world (but that Maui salted caramel costs a fortune 😫 !
.
But in the case of Donald Trump vs Mitch McConnell, he knew EXACTLY what he was doing. He knew it would play right into Speaker Pelosi’s hands—a common tactic of the narcissist—divide and conquer (or perhaps more accurately in Trump’s case: chaos by division). You may THINK you’ve reached an agreement! But I’m not done with you yet.
.
He knew it would make every Republican who isn’t onboard the conspiracy crazytrain rue the day they first heard of Donald Trump. And he knew by dangling an additional $1,400.00 over McConnell’s figure, he was throwing a ginormous wrench into the machinery, just three days before Christmas, twenty-eight days before he exits the stage, during a pandemic that he’s exacerbated with his indifference—a day after Congress has left town for the holidays.
.
Captain Chaos strikes again.
.
This one’s all yours, Mitch.
.
In the end, it’s always, always, ALWAYS about him. Don’t get your hopes up about that $2,000.00 check America, he’s just pandering to your needs to punish McConnell for his “disloyalty.” Unless you can offer him some way of short-circuiting his date with destiny, he couldn’t care less about you, your kids, your mortgage, or whether you live or die.

US orders 100 million more coronavirus vaccine doses: Pfizer

US orders 100 million more coronavirus vaccine doses: Pfizer
By Zack Budryk - 12/23/20 07:50 AM EST

The Trump administration has ordered another 100 million doses of Pfizer and BioNTech’s coronavirus vaccine, Pfizer announced Wednesday.

Under the agreement, Pfizer and BioNTech will supply a total of 200 million doses to the U.S., the company said in a statement. The deliveries are expected to be completed by the end of July 2021. The deal will also give the government the option to buy up to 400 million more doses.

“With these 100 million additional doses, the United States will be able to protect more individuals and hopefully end this devastating pandemic more quickly,” Pfizer chairman and CEO Albert Bourla said in a statement. “We look forward to continuing our work with the U.S. government and healthcare providers around the country.”

“Securing more doses from Pfizer and BioNTech for delivery in the second quarter of 2021 further expands our supply of doses across the Operation Warp Speed portfolio,” Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said in a statement.

“This new federal purchase can give Americans even more confidence that we will have enough supply to vaccinate every American who wants it by June 2021,” Azar added.

GOP puts pressure on Pelosi over Swalwell

GOP puts pressure on Pelosi over Swalwell
By Juliegrace Brufke - 12/23/20 06:00 AM EST

House Republicans are seizing on Rep. Eric Swalwell’s (D-Calif.) connection to an alleged Chinese spy to put pressure on Democrats to drop him from the House Intelligence Committee in the next Congress.

GOP lawmakers argue Swalwell is a national security threat given his former ties to Christine Fang, who according to a report in Axios helped fundraise for Swalwell during his 2014 reelection campaign and helped place an intern inside his office before leaving the country in 2015 amid a federal investigation into her actions.

Republicans are already eyeing winning back the House majority in 2022 after gaining seats in November, and they see the Swalwell story as one that will stick with voters.

“This is a major political problem for House Democrats and Nancy Pelosi,” Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.), the incoming chairman of the Republican Study Committee, told The Hill, adding it won’t go away “until Eric Swalwell goes away.”

The National Republican Congressional Committee has sought to tie Swalwell to Democrats it is targeting in the midterms, such as Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.).

“We're going to continue to talk about this as long as he remains on the House Intelligence Committee, because the Speaker Pelosi still needs to give real answers to some of the serious questions like when did she know about Swalwell’s relationship with a Chinese spy,” House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) told The Hill.

Dr. Fauci on Turning 80 and What He's Looking Forward to About Post-Vaccine Life

Dr. Fauci on Turning 80 and What He’s Looking Forward to About Post-Vaccine Life

Is there anything in particular that you are looking forward to right now?

I’m looking forward to crushing and ending this outbreak the way we did with smallpox, the way we did with polio, the way we did with measles. I think we’re going to do it in the next year. If enough people in the United States get vaccinated … we can turn this around from a threat that’s scaring the heck out of everyone to something that is behind us.

Personally, I’d like to get back to some of the really simple things that I enjoyed, but didn’t pay much attention to. Like, going out to a movie with my wife, or going out to a restaurant and relaxing and not worrying about getting infected because you’re inside in a room with other people. You just forget those simple pleasures.

And finally the thing is, to see my daughters again. I mean, I’m getting… I wouldn’t say tired of… But just seeing them on a Zoom screen is OK, but it’s not giving them a hug.

How are you planning to mark your 80th birthday?

I’m going to have a quiet dinner with my wife, and we’re going to Zoom in the kids. So it’s the next best thing. I noted to my wife that I have never had a Christmas without the children since the day they were born. So this is going to be a monumental, landmark Christmas. Spending Christmas without your daughters when every single Christmas I’ve had, they were with us literally right around the table, doing things like decorating a tree and stuff like that. So that’s not what we’re having. But we will have it again.

NAACP files suit accusing Trump, GOP of violating KKK Act

NAACP files suit accusing Trump, GOP of violating KKK Act
By Harper Neidig - 12/22/20 11:37 AM EST

The NAACP is accusing President Trump and the Republican Party of violating the Ku Klux Klan Act with their efforts to overturn election results in key battleground states.

In an amended lawsuit filed Monday night, the civil rights organization added the Reconstruction-era law to their case against the president's campaign that was filed last month.

"Defendants’ efforts to disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of voters — targeting cities with large Black populations, including Detroit, Michigan, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Atlanta, Georgia — repeat the worst abuses in our nation’s history, where Black Americans were denied a voice in American democracy for most of the first two centuries of the Republic," the new lawsuit reads.

The NAACP filed the lawsuit last month on behalf of the Michigan Welfare Rights Organization and a group of Black Michigan voters, accusing the Trump campaign of violating the Voting Rights Act in seeking to overturn President-elect Joe Biden's victory.

The amended lawsuit added the Republican National Committee (RNC) as a defendant in the case and the allegations about the Ku Klux Klan Act.

'Why bother?': Biden, Trump advisers see little value in White House meeting

'Why bother?': Biden, Trump advisers see little value in White House meeting
As of this weekend, President Trump has waited longer than any president in nearly a century to sit down with his successor.
By THEODORIC MEYER and DANIEL LIPPMAN

As of this weekend, President Donald Trump has now waited longer than any president in nearly a century to sit down with his successor at the White House — a tradition aimed at highlighting the peaceful transfer of power that is at the core of American democracy.

And advisers to Trump say he and President-elect Joe Biden may never come face to face, even on Inauguration Day, blowing up another American political ritual.

But while Biden said in a CNN interview earlier this month that Trump’s presence at his inauguration would be symbolically important, neither side sees much value in the two men conversing … ever.

“In normal circumstances, it is one more indication of the peaceful transfer of power and the depth of our respect for democracy,” said John Podesta, who as President Bill Clinton’s chief of staff welcomed President-elect George W. Bush and his top aides to the White House on Dec. 19, 2000, a meeting that was delayed by the Florida recount and court challenges to the election results.

But Biden, Podesta said, would have little to gain from meeting with Trump, who still hasn’t conceded. “My view would be, why bother?” he said.

Those in Trump’s orbit aren’t any more enthusiastic than Podesta. “Talk to him about what?” said one person close to the president, when asked whether Trump might speak to Biden.

Democrats Lead In Georgia Senate Races

Democrats Lead In Georgia Senate Races
December 22, 2020 at 8:14 am EST By Taegan Goddard

A new SurveyUSA poll in Goergia finds Jon Ossoff (D) leading Sen. David Perdue (R) in their U.S. Senate runoff, 51% to 46%.

In the other Senate runoff, Raphael Warnock (D) leads Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R), 52% to 45%

From the pollster: “Georgia is a hot mess and no opinion pollster could possibly say what will happen when votes are counted in 2 weeks… Any outcome is possible, including victories for the 2 Republican incumbent US Senators. But: the polling data at this hour does not support that, and heading into Christmas week, Democratic challengers Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock appear to be benefiting — at least momentarily — from a GOP cacophony.”
