The Beginning Of The End Of Prohibition

Predictions are hard to get right, and I’m not particularly good at them. But I think today is the beginning of the end of the drug war as we know and loathe it. Once legal marijuana gets established in Colorado, other states will probably follow their example very quickly. I imagine it will legal almost everywhere in the US in 10 years, and that other countries in the Americas will legalize production to help fill the demand.

It’s hard to think about any really big changes in society without coming back to marriage rights. Those changes have happened so quickly, and it’s been so profound, that it seems like you have to compare or contrast everything else to it. I believe that the collapse of prohibition will be swift, as the expansion of marriage rights has been, for the same sort of reason. The opposition is irrational, and once the thing is tested in the real world, the argument will be over.

The drug war is an obscenity. It ruins lives, decimates communities, and functions as the main practical foundation of racial inequality in our country. The drug war is the main engine behind the creation of a criminal class in the US. It’s a profoundly destructive and immoral set of policies. The drug war is one of the worst things about America. And today, the drug war has been dealt a death blow.

Nice Shirt Ya Got There. Care To Find Out A Little About Who Made It?

While Americans fight over the latest deals at retailers, these kids are the ones doing the actual work on some of the clothing that is sold to us by big-box stores.

Woody Guthrie's New Year's resolutions from 1942/43 are just great.

Woody Guthrie's New Year's resolutions from 1942/43 are just great. I came for the doodles, stayed for the heartfelt sentiment, humanity and wisdom.

Happy New Year!!! Let us all commit that 2014 is the year we fight back! That means if all you do right now is comment on blogs, then you need to show up & phone bank this year. If all you do is blog, then you need to canvass this year. If all you do is canvass or phone bank, then you need to precinct captain this year. If all you do is precinct captain, then you need set a fundraising target this year. If all you do is fundraise, then you need to double it this year. Or show up at a phonebank.

You get the picture. No one is excused, and no one gets to rest on their laurels. I don’t care what you did last year, or the year before, or 10, 20, 30 years ago. This year – you do more.

Because the plutocrats, their mercenaries, and their rube army don’t quit. And our side is playing for bigger stakes.

When we fight, we win. I’m dedicating 2014 to fighting. And winning.

Two men to marry during Rose Parade: "Love Is The Best Protection"

PASADENA- In a Tournament of Roses first, two Los Angeles men will celebrate their gay marriage on a Rose Parade float as it goes down Colorado Boulevard on New Year's Day. The wedding of Danny Leclair, 45, and Aubrey Loots, 42, will take place atop a giant wedding cake-shaped float sponsored by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, according to a press release. It is the third float sponsored by the foundation.

"One of the things we're really excited about is we're standing on the shoulders of thousands of men and women who came before us in this fight for marriage equality," Leclair said. "We're excited to be part of that story, to be able to do this because of them. We're looking forward to honor that."

This Rose Parade is the first year gay marriage has been legal in California following the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in June.

..................

The float's theme is "Love is the Best Protection." It will feature a large wedding cake, decorated in white coconut chips and maroon-colored kidney beans with white roses and dendrobium orchids.
