Cliven Bundy threatens violence against federal agents as Sean Hannity eggs him on

Hannity bragged that some of those millions got their information from his program.

“In my mind, there’s no doubt that so many people showed up to support you, and I would even argue a little bit that the media coverage that myself and some other people have given to this case played a part in this because none of it made sense,” Hannity said.

Then he asked Bundy’s son, point blank, if he worried federal agents would kill his father or another family member.

“This battle has been going on for my whole life, almost, and if death were our main fear, we wouldn’t be here today,” Ammon Bundy said, as the TV screen showed the Gadsden “Don’t Tread On Me” flag. “Freedom is much greater than death. People have to understand that.”

"We on the left should not allow conservatives to get away with appropriating patriotism"

Krystal Ball:

We on the left should not allow conservatives to get away with appropriating patriotism; bastardising it and claiming it as their exclusive domain. We should not accept their loaded rendering of the term. Because real patriotism should be grounded in the recognition that from the highest heights of power down to the homeless vet sleeping on the streets we are all Americans.

Thought Experiment: What If Instead Of Shouting "Heil Hitler" Suspect Had Shouted "Allahu Akbar"?

Peter Bergen, writing for CNN.com:

Now let's do the thought experiment in which instead of shouting "Heil Hitler" after he was arrested, the suspect had shouted "Allahu Akbar." Only two days before the first anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings, this simple switch of words would surely have greatly increased the extent and type of coverage the incident received.

Yet the death toll in the shootings in Kansas is similar to that of last year's Boston Marathon bombings, where three people were killed and the suspects later killed a police officer as they tried to evade capture. (Many more, of course, were also wounded in the Boston attacks; 16 men, women and children lost limbs.)

In fact, since 9/11 extremists affiliated with a variety of far-right wing ideologies, including white supremacists, anti-abortion extremists and anti-government militants, have killed more people in the United States than have extremists motivated by al Qaeda's ideology. According to a count by the New America Foundation, right wing extremists have killed 34 people in the United States for political reasons since 9/11. (The total includes the latest shootings in Kansas, which are being classified as a hate crime).

'You go back and read the facts of the story, And then you go, ‘Uh oh”

As became clear late last week and over the weekend, Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy has a core group of supporters, many of whom happen to have weapons they’re willing to bring to a protest. Bundy, who’s been ignoring federal laws and court rulings for many years, also has his champions among conservative media personalities.

But David Nather noted that there seems to be a ceiling on Bundy support among conservatives who ordinarily enjoy railing against “big government,” but who fail to see a “powerful rallying cry” in this story.

“It’s like, really, Glenn Beck? This is the issue you want to get behind?” said one Nevada conservative activist who has followed the story for years. “People who aren’t in tune with the story just jumped all over it. And then you go back and read the facts of the story, and then you go, ‘Uh oh.’”

Uh oh, indeed. The new right-wing cause celebre is a man who doesn’t recognize the legitimacy of the United States government, and whose supporters appeared prepared for a confrontation – a potentially violent confrontation – with American law enforcement.

Province eliminates coal-fired generation: The end of an era in Ontario – a rather dirty one.

By Rick Drennan
MISSISSAUGA — It marks the end of an era in Ontario – a rather dirty one.

This province is now the first jurisdiction in North America to fully eliminate coal as a source of electricity generation. The Thunder Bay Generating Station, Ontario's last remaining coal-fired facility, has burned its last supply of coal.

Operated by Ontario Power Generation, the station was the oldest coal-fired station in the province. The plant is scheduled to be converted to burn advanced biomass, a renewable fuel source.

The province has replaced coal generation with a mix of emission-free electricity sources like nuclear, waterpower, wind and solar, along with lower-emission electricity sources like natural gas and biomass.

.......................................

Ontario has fulfilled its commitment to end coal generation in advance of its target of the end of 2014. A coal-free electricity supply mix has led to a significant reduction in harmful emissions, as well as cleaner air.

FBI Uncovers Al-Qaeda Plot To Just Sit Back And Enjoy Collapse Of United States

................................

The FBI has also warned that numerous al-Qaeda agents may have established sleeper cells for the purpose of “getting a kick out of” the nation’s downfall on American soil. The bureau urged U.S. residents to use caution around schools, hospitals, legislative bodies, prisons, and other decaying institutions whose imminent failure terrorists may wish to observe up close.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, one high-ranking U.S. counterterrorism official has described the present situation as a massive failure of intelligence.

“The warning signs were there all along, but unfortunately we failed to heed them,” said the official, who advised Americans to brace for widespread devastation. “If we’d listened to experts or even our own common sense, we would’ve realized that this plot was being actively orchestrated within our own borders. But we didn’t, and now every one of our citizens and our very way of life is at risk from this threat.”

“Sadly, al-Qaeda has us right where they want us,” the official added, “and at this point, I fear it is too late to do anything about it.”

Bill Nye: Creationism is “bad for science education, bad for the U.S., and thereby bad for humankind

- Bill Nye the Science Guy states in an essay creationism is “bad for science education, bad for the U.S., and thereby bad for humankind”

Bill Nye has taken the time to respond to critics in an essay published in Skeptical Inquirer. In the essay he explains how the debate arose from a video on BigThink.com, where Nye responded to a question about creationism. The video went viral; it had 6.3 million views at the time Nye wrote his essay. One of the viewers and subsequent responders was Ken Ham:

“He wrote to me and challenged me to a debate. For several months, I put the offer or proposal aside thinking the whole thing would blow over. After all, his challenge was based on a minute and a half of video that exists with little context. He was persistent. So, as the weeks went by and we corresponded, I acceded the challenge. More specifically, I was willing to come to his facility if the topic was: “Is creation a viable model of origins in the modern scientific era?” Note that this title does not include the word “evolution,” nor does it connote or imply that we would discuss evolution specifically.”

He also addresses why he thought it was important to engage in this debate, whether it was right or not:

“Many of you, by that I mean many of my skeptic and humanist colleagues, expressed deep concern and anger that I would be so foolish as to accept a debate with a creationist, as this would promote him and them more than it would promote me and us. As I often say and sincerely believe, “You may be right.” But, I held strongly to the view that it was an opportunity to expose the well-intending Ken Ham and the support he receives from his followers as being bad for Kentucky, bad for science education, bad for the U.S., and thereby bad for humankind—I do not feel I’m exaggerating when I express it this strongly.”

Feinstein, Meet Irony: Outraged Senate Will Investigate Leak But Not Horrific Acts It Reveals

Surreal: Charging that possible perps "broke the law and should be prosecuted,” aggrieved Senate Intelligence Committee chair Dianne Feinstein is investigating, and has called on the DOJ to investigate, the dastardly leak to McClatchy of parts of the 6,600-page report finding the CIA repeatedly lied about a "brutal" torture program “inconsistent with (U.S.) public policy positions regarding human rights" - torture that in fact didn't work. It seems the Senate is scandalized not by the crimes committed in our names, but by journalists telling us about them. With the call for prosecution, the government thus maintains its admirable stance in only making accountable the people who reveal our nation's misdeeds - see John Kiriakou and Edward Snowden - but not those who authorize or commit them. Oh we have arrived at a sorrowful place.
