BP, Anadarko Rejected by U.S. Supreme Court on Gulf Spill Fines

Source: Bloomberg

The U.S. Supreme Court rejected appeals from BP Plc and Anadarko Petroleum Corp., leaving intact a ruling that opens the companies to potentially billions of dollars in fines for the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

The federal government is seeking as much as $13.7 billion in civil fines from BP and more than $1 billion from Anadarko. The offshore spill, caused by the explosion of BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil rig, was the largest in U.S. history, releasing millions of barrels of oil into the Gulf.

U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier in New Orleans could say any day what fine he will impose on BP and Anadarko. Supreme Court intervention might have delayed that ruling.

An earlier order by Barbier was at issue in the Supreme Court appeal. A federal appeals court last year upheld the judge’s conclusion that BP and Anadarko were automatically liable as co-owners of the well.

‘I’ll have the Scalia is a Douche, please.’”

This week, the Philadelphia restaurant put two new items on its menu, drawing inspiration from current events.

“Antonin Scalia is a Douche,” an egg dish with vegetables, cheese, and andouille sausage (for which there was enough meat to make 150 servings) sold out before 10 AM on Sunday. “The Supreme Court Finally Got It Right” quiches, available with or without prosciutto ham, were gone in less time than that.

Carol Mickey, who owns the restaurant, tells the Billy Penn that customers responded positively to menu jokes at Scalia’s expense. “Not one single person complained,” Mickey says. “The atmosphere in (the diner) was really wonderful. People were just loving saying it! ‘I’ll have the Scalia is a Douche, please.’”

On Sunday, Jon Geeting, engagement editor at PlanPhilly, tweeted out the unfortunate news that Morning Glory was plum out of Scalia-inspired brunch dishes:

Southerners have got to realize that Margaret Mitchell was a writer of fiction.

?1435202583

She did not chronicle the romance of the Lost Cause of the Confederacy. She made it up. Of course, she was helped by historians like Edward A. Pollard, author of the 1866 whitewash of the war, The Lost Cause (The Standard Southern History of the War of the Confederates). She was also helped by the articles of Jubal Early, and the autobiography of Jefferson Davis, all of whom claimed that, in spite of all written evidence to the contrary, the Civil War was not fought over slavery. But it was always a fairy tale.

Southerners stole people. They robbed people of their freedom. And they did not just rob them of their liberty and their labor, they robbed them of their progeny. They robbed their descendants of a future. This is the heritage of the South. This is the infamous Lost Cause that many today still consider so noble that they have enshrined it into a veritable altar at which we are expected to pay homage. Or at the very least respect
.

I don't respect treason.

.............

This is the real Southern heritage. It is not found in Birth of a Nation or Gone With the Wind. It is found in a belief that for some reason white men and women are superior to all whose skin color is any different. There is no other separate Southern heritage except treason.

It is a heritage that should cause them to writhe in shame. It is a heritage of the kidnapping, subjugation, forced breeding and selling of a free people. It is a heritage of treason and treachery. And hate.

It is time they got over it.

Phyllis Schlafly Has The Sadz

"We have a government of three separate powers and they have their duties, rights and obligations, but nobody assigned to the judicial branch in the Constitution has the right to overturn the law that we’ve had for millennia. It’s just not the kind of country that we live in. A lot of people thought when the Supreme Court handed down its bad decision in Roe v Wade, well the Supreme Court has spoken and that’s it. That settles it. Well, it didn’t settle it. It was just the beginning of a big fight. And eventually that decision’s going to be overturned. But, meanwhile, we’ve cut big holes in it because the American people did not accept the ‘rule of law’ that one human being could belong to another human being. The same thing will happen here."
- Phyllis Schlafly, speaking to World Net Daily.

and you want to call yourself a patriot, Ms. Schlafly???
