German expert: Cases create testing, testing doesn't create cases.

Trump keeps saying the US shows worse numbers than Germany because US tests more.

Not at all true. Germany can now test much less because its heavy early testing contained the problem.

German expert: Cases create testing, testing doesn't create cases.

Dr. Hans-Georg Kräusslich, a professor and infectious diseases expert at the University of Heidelberg in Germany, said that the number of tests conducted is generally determined by medical need, specifically the number of people experiencing symptoms -- and since Germany has a low true infection rate, the country does not need to use even close to its full testing capacity.

In other words, Kräusslich said, Trump is arguing that more testing "creates" more cases -- but, in reality, "more symptomatic infections 'create' more testing."

As of Wednesday, Germany, with a population of about 83 million, had 197,341 confirmed cases and 9,036 deaths. The US, with a population about four times larger, had about 15 times as many confirmed cases through Wednesday (3,054,699) and about 15 times as many deaths (132,300).

Oh My: McConnell May Not Attend GOP Convention - BUT LET'S GO BACK TO SCHOOL

🚨MCCONNELL seems uncertain about GOP convention.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) told the Cincinnati Enquirer he was uncertain about attending the Republican convention next month.

“It's a challenging situation & a number of my colleagues announced they are not going to attend. And we’ll have to wait and see how things look in late August to determine whether or not you can safely convene that many people.”

Pelosi Statement on Supreme Court Ruling on Congressional Oversight: "Not Good News For Potus"

JULY 9, 2020 PRESS RELEASE

Washington, D.C – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on the consolidated cases of Trump v. Mazars and Trump v. Deutsche Bank, in which the Court asked the lower courts to further develop the record to assess the House’s need for the President’s financial records:

“A careful reading of the Supreme Court rulings related to the President’s financial records is not good news for President Trump.

“The Court has reaffirmed the Congress’s authority to conduct oversight on behalf of the American people, as it asks for further information from the Congress. Congress’s constitutional responsibility to uncover the truth continues, specifically related to the President’s Russia connection that he is hiding.

“The Congress will continue to conduct oversight For The People, upholding the separation of powers that is the genius of our Constitution. We will continue to press our case in the lower courts.

Vote is 7-2. Chief Justice Roberts writes.

Thomas and Alito dissent.

"Given these safeguards and the Court's precedents, we cannot conclude that absolute immunity is necessary or appropriate under Article II or the Supremacy Clause. Our dissenting colleagues agree," the chief writes.

Justices Rule Against Trump on Tax Returns

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled a grand jury in New York City can see President Trump’s tax returns, though the decision was sent back to the lower courts since Trump can still appeal.

The bottom line: Trump does not have “categorical” immunity against a criminal subpoena, as his lawyers argued. Still Trump can argue the specifics of Vance’s subpoenas.

It was a 7 to 2 decision with Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh both voting to release Trump’s financial records.

CAVEATS:
SCOTUS votes 7-2 in favor of New York District Attorney in fight over Trump’s tax returns.

However, there are catches.

Case will go back to lower court to iron out limits of subpoena. Tax returns furnished to grand jury (and thus not public anyway).

Gist of the decision, which is 7-2 (with Alito and Thomas in dissent): lower courts did not take an adequate look at the special concerns involved when Congress subpoenas information about a president.

They need to try again.

The unemployment numbers - some context

1.3 million people filed for unemployment last week.

That pushes the total number of Americans who have filed for unemployment during the coronavirus crisis past 50 million.

The entire United States workforce is only 160 million

A fellow was stuck on his rooftop in a flood. He was praying to God for help.

Soon a man in a rowboat came by and the fellow shouted to the man on the roof, “Jump in, I can save you.”

The stranded fellow shouted back, “No, it’s OK, I’m praying to God and he is going to save me.”

So the rowboat went on.

Then a motorboat came by. “The fellow in the motorboat shouted, “Jump in, I can save you.”

To this the stranded man said, “No thanks, I’m praying to God and he is going to save me. I have faith.”

So the motorboat went on.

Then a helicopter came by and the pilot shouted down, “Grab this rope and I will lift you to safety.”

To this the stranded man again replied, “No thanks, I’m praying to God and he is going to save me. I have faith.”

So the helicopter reluctantly flew away.

Soon the water rose above the rooftop and the man drowned. He went to Heaven. He finally got his chance to discuss this whole situation with God, at which point he exclaimed, “I had faith in you but you didn’t save me, you let me drown. I don’t understand why!”

To this God replied, “I sent you a rowboat and a motorboat and a helicopter, what more did you expect?”

Teacher: "I double dog dare Trump to sit in class of 39-6th graders & breathe that air without prep"

This is right on:

“I double dog dare Donald Trump to sit in a class of 39 sixth graders and breathe that air without any preparation for how we’re going to bring our kids back safely.”
National Education Association President Lily Eskelsen Garcia says schools can only reopen if done so safely.
