" -- if I show up in a cast I'll lose my job. And I need my job to keep going to school."

SEPTEMBER 26, 2013

Injured the Kid

Talked to a student today during office time to go over some work. In saying "see you next class" I notice the student has an Ace bandage tightly wrapped around the forearm, wrist, and hand. I ask what happened, are you OK, and so forth.

The student explains that while working as a cook in a local chain restaurant, another worker said, boss says we need to move this fryer. In the process the fryer is dropped on the student's arm, causing intense pain. The next day the student goes to the doctor. I don't know the student's insurance situation, but I'd bet in college, working parents covers it.

Anyway, the student tells me, "I had to make the doctor not give me an x-ray, because I can't afford to miss any work -- if I show up in a cast I'll lose my job. And I need my job to keep going to school."

Crap.

I kindly advised the kid to get back to the doctor and get the x-ray as Number One, because an untreated bone break is a Bad Thing. I also remarked that many people who are hurt through no fault of their own at work may be entitled to compensation.

I believe the kid is telling the truth; the kid did the assigned work for my course, and I typically only get lied to for the purposes of excuses for not doing the assigned work.

What a mess. The kid is so terrified about losing a horrible low-paying job that the kid refuses basic medical treatment, risking making a simple injury into a possible lifelong disaster. For a fry cook gig.

This is a kid who comes from the middle class. This is a kid whose kids will not be middle class, because that's not a thing anymore.

Why do I say that?

Because we're fucked if we live in a land where if you're even relatively priviliged enough to be able to go to a doctor at all, you'll refuse treatment because you're scared that an obviously negligent minimum-wage employer will fire you.

I teach at a community college. My students are all terrified. They are not dumb.

(This is a true story; details of course changed to protect student anonymity.)

President Cruz Fondly Recalls 21-Hour Speech That Started It All

President Cruz Fondly Recalls 21-Hour Speech That Started It All
NEWS • Politics • Politicians • ISSUE 49•39 • Sep 25, 2013

..................

“When he got up and talked for 21 hours about Duck Dynasty, those ‘little burgers’ from White Castle, and how the restaurant his father worked at was a cross between a Denny’s and a Benihana, that’s when I knew: That’s the guy I’m going to vote for in three years,” said real estate agent Erin Greene, who lives in Florida, a state that Cruz easily carried by over 2 million votes in 2016. “I was watching history happen in front of my eyes. When he sang a Toby Keith song saying ‘we'll put a boot in your . . . posterior,’ it was like, okay, a political star is born.”

“This entire country said to itself, ‘This is the man who is going to lead us,’” Greene said. “America woke up that day.”

President Cruz enjoyed comfortable leads in the polls throughout the run-up to the November 2016 election, with only two noteworthy instances in which Clinton ever pulled ahead. The former New York senator was summarily beaten back, however, as the Cruz campaign expertly wielded what proved to be its ultimate trump card: his 2013 Senate floor speech.

“Every time (Clinton) made a little headway, we’d just trot out Green Eggs And Ham,” President Cruz explained. “Just kept on playing that clip over and over again. There was no more powerful message. It not only showed who I was, but proved the Republican Party to be inclusive, united, down to earth, and ready to lead.”

"Green Eggs And..."

You know, reminds me of a character I once read about, by I believe one of your favorite authors, Dr. Seuss and his beloved children's book, "The Bore-ax". (audience laughter)

Join me now as I read one of my favorite sections. (wild audience cheering as Jon takes out the book)

In the land of D.C., in the Senate of Snooze,
Lived the showboatiest Blab whose name was Ted Cruz.

Ted talked about health care, compared it to Nazis.
As comparisons so, he was off by a lotsy.

Health care, he said, would end this great nation.
A point made after hours of mouth masturbation.

Repeal it, defund it, erase it, deny it,
Murder it, skullfuck it, bread and deep fry it!

Bill Gates admits Control-Alt-Delete was a mistake, blames IBM

Bill Gates admits Control-Alt-Delete was a mistake, blames IBM

"It was a mistake," Gates admits to an audience left laughing at his honesty. "We could have had a single button, but the guy who did the IBM keyboard design didn't wanna give us our single button." David Bradley, an engineer who worked on the original IBM PC, invented the combination which was originally designed to reboot a PC. "I may have invented it, but Bill made it famous," Bradley said in an interview previously, leaving Bill Gates looking rather awkward. To this day the combination still exists in Windows 8, allowing users to lock a machine or access the task manager. While Windows 8 defaults to a new login screen, it's still possible to use the traditional Control-Alt-Delete requirement and a number of businesses running on Windows XP and Windows 7 will still use it every day.

Top Nevada GOPer: 2014 Will Be 'Great' For Party Because Minorities, Young People Won't Vote

Top Nevada GOPer: 2014 Will Be 'Great' For Party Because Minorities, Young People Won't Vote

TOM KLUDT – SEPTEMBER 26, 2013, 7:40 AM EDT
The top Republican in Nevada's state assembly predicted earlier this week that his party will triumph in 2014 in part because minority and young voters will be more apt to stay home in a non-presidential year.

State Assembly Minority Leader Pat Hickey (R) made the comments in an interview with conservative talk radio host Dan Mason.

"We have some real opportunities in 2014," Hickey said Tuesday. "This is a great year in an off-presidential election. Seemingly no Democrat on the top of the ticket against (Gov. Brian) Sandoval. No Harry Reid. Probably where we had a million voters turn out in 2012, we'll have like 700,000. A lot of minorities, a lot of younger people will not turn out in a non-presidential. It's a great year for Republicans."

OBAMACARE: "This THING Is Going To Work"

The rates are in

2013

Health and Human Services has released the rates for the federally run Exchange marketplaces in 36 states. They are really good:

http://aspe.hhs.gov/health/reports/2013/MarketplacePremiums/ib_marketplace_premiums.cfm

Here are the big take-aways:

$145 a month for the cheapest Bronze plan for a 27 year old making $25,000 a year is definately affordable

Family coverage at either 2nd cheapest Silver or cheapest Bronze is extraordinarily affordable –

Competition does wonders

Networks matter, some pricing will be higher in outlier counties compared to core counties.

This thing is going to work.

Vindication: Obamacare Average Family Premium at $95

TAKE THAT MR. CRUZ!!!

Today, the HHS released data on health insurance exchanges under the Affordable Care Act that shows premiums coming in well below previous estimates. 16% below estimates, on average. And that's before subsidies kick in for the vast majority of those who will use the marketplaces to buy insurance. The average cost of the mid-tier plans on which subsidies are based will be $328 before the subsidies, and it drops to $249 before the subsidies for the cheapest "Bronze" plans.

UNROMANTIC - America: Lonelier & Poorer

UNROMANTIC
Lonelier and poorer: the incredibly depressing future for Americans

........................

The median income for all families with children under 18 was just under $60,000 last year, up about 3% since 1990 after adjusting for inflation. But what might once have been considered the “typical” American family—a married couple, living together, with at least one child under 18—has done quite a bit better: Their median income was $81,455, up nearly 16% from 1990.

The trouble is, such families have become significantly less common over time. In 1980, married couples made up 80% of all families with children. A decade later, that figure had fallen below 75%. Today, it’s less than two-thirds.

Here’s another look at the decline in marriage numbers, from the US Census Department. In 1970, around 71% of households were classified as married couples. That’s down to about 49% in the most recent numbers for 2012.
