First night of the DNC: what enthusiasm gap?

“I would bet my mortgage that Romney and Karl Rove and other Republican big-shot operatives were surprised by the conviction they saw tonight. A curve ball they didn’t expect.

“In sum, a much stronger first night than the Republicans’. Better orchestrated. Better speeches. And far more excitement in the hall for the candidate. What was that about the “enthusiasm gap” the Democrats are suffering from, which has been conventional wisdom for months, or actually a couple of years? As of last night, the enthusiasm gap is quickly morphing into something that Mitt Romney needs to worry about.”

I just donated to the Obama Campaign Because Of This Quote From Michelle Obama

MICHELLE OBAMA:

“And if our parents and grandparents could toil and struggle for us, if they could raise beams of steel to the sky, send a man to the moon, and connect the world with the touch of a button, then surely we can keep on sacrificing and building for our own kids and grandkids.”

PEW: Romney Loses To The Chair

... while there has been a modest increase in the percentage saying they view Mitt Romney more favorably in the wake of the convention, his acceptance speech was not the highlight of the event: As many of those who watched at least a little convention coverage cited Clint Eastwood’s speech as the convention highlight (20%) as named Romney’s speech (17%).

FINALLY - After years in the wilderness, the social liberals are at the forefront.

Thoughts on Day 1 at the DNC – The Rise of the Social Liberals
By: David Dayen Wednesday September 5, 2012 6:26 am

..........................

So where does that leave the party in trying to fire up its base? The same way Republicans fire up their base, by appealing to identity and socio-cultural policy. Where the convention’s first night truly and unabashedly veered to the left is on issues like the right to choose the legal medical procedure of abortion, or comprehensive immigration reform and the DREAM Act, or marriage equality. With nothing left to truly differentiate from the other party – with no allowable third rails to touch on the economic front that won’t raise the ire of big money donors
– Democrats have become a liberal social policy party, and they wear that on their sleeve, appealing very directly to women, Hispanics, the LGBT community and African-Americans, often entirely through the identity of the speakers and the connection between the speakers and the audience.

The most incredible speech in this regard came from Nancy Keenan of NARAL, which sounded most like the speech Ted Kennedy gave about Robert Bork credited with stopping him from ascending to the Supreme Court. Heck, Teddy himself made an appearance in a tribute video, destroying Mitt Romney in a debate.

For all the head-shaking and tut-tutting at the dynamic of “What’s the Matter With Kansas,” and the lack of understanding for how “emotional” issues can stand in above economic ones, we’re seeing the exact same dynamic play out on the Democratic side. After years in the wilderness, the social liberals are at the forefront. And the difference is that the activists behind those policies – LGBT activists, DREAMers, to use a couple examples – made sustained arguments with the public, and Democrats finally recognized the value of getting on their side. Plus, these are the tribal issues that differentiate the parties, the fault lines in American politics. Democrats are the melting pot party, and they need to respect and lift up those issues critical to the disparate elements of their base.

Big Dawg BITES Repukes HARD - REAL HARD!

BILL CLINTON:

what happened? We put them (Republicans back in) -- or the Supreme Court did -- and they got rid of pay as you go, they (passed) the tax cuts and spent lots of money. ... We had a projected surplus of $5.7 trillion and turned it into a projected debt of $5.8 trillion over the next 10 years. We would have been out of debt by next year or the year after next. ...

Dear wingnuts, About Michelle Obama's Speech...

You wingnuts have become so brainwashed by your own rhetoric, that you are unable realize that the Democratic Party is the party of personal responsibility and hard work, and that the Romney/Ryan-led GOP is the party which supports greed, entitlement, irresponsibility, and stealing from the working and middle class to enrich the wealthy!

Bill Clinton Speech At Democratic Convention: GOP 'Built' National Debt

Source: Huffington Post

But perhaps the main point of Clinton's speech was putting the blame for the national debt squarely at the GOP's doorstep.

He pointed to the giant national debt clock that Republicans had at their convention, saying, "You see that debt clock?"

"They built it!" shouted a man in the audience.

"Yeah, they built it. They built it," replied Clinton, to loud cheers and laughs from the audience.

Deval Patrick: ‘It Is Time For Democrats To Grow A Backbone & Stand Up For What We Believe’

Deval Patrick: ‘It Is Time For Democrats To Grow A Backbone’
By Annie-Rose Strasser on Sep 4, 2012 at 10:14 pm

In making the case for the re-election of President Barack Obama Tuesday night at the Democratic Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick called on Democrats to “grow a backbone.”

“We are Americans,” Patrick said to roaring applause, “We shape our own future”:

My message is this — it is time for Democrats to grow a backbone and stand up for what we believe. Quit waiting for pundits or polls or Super PACs to tell us who the next President or senator or congressman will be. We are Americans. We shape our own future.
