Do you ever panic ?

I mailed something certified mail 10 days ago. It was to an address only 12 miles from me. Yeah, I could have driven it there but it's a 24 mile round trip versus 3 miles roundtrip to the post office.

Anyway, the green certified return mail receipt has not gotten to me yet, ten days later. I FREAKED OUT, and called the office of the guy to leave a voicemail asking about status. I TOTALLY FREAKING forgot you can check that on https://tools.usps.com/go/TrackConfirmAction_input

So, after politely freaking out on the nice lady at his office working on Sunday (yes I was polite and civil, just panicked), I checked the website. Bingo, freaking manila envelope took 4 days to travel 12 miles. I'm NOT bashing USPS. Just the facts.

So, I called the nice lady back, told her emergency was over, and thanked her for her patience! Now I feel pretty stupid and guilty.

If you consider yourself a computer geek, rec this thread, please....

No posting required. Just curious to see the population out of all active posters and lurkers. Yes, I'd consider myself one.

SCOTUS Racism, 1896 style: Plessy v. Ferguson, 163 U.S. 537

First, a wiki link to introduce you to the racism.

Then, the horrendous opinion itself.

Where to start ? Consider this nasty gem:

The distinction between laws interfering with the political equality of the negro and those requiring the separation of the two races in schools, theatres and railway carriages has been frequently drawn by this court.

According to wiki, Plessy was never completely overturned by SCOTUS, although Brown ruled segregation in public education was unconstitutional.

We've come a long way in 119 years.

What's on your bucket list ?

1- Go to Germany for the first time and meet DFW and his lovely family.
2- Go to Texas and get my ass kicked (for real) by Skittles (relax Skittles, I'm joking)
3- Go to Chicago and have lunch with marym625
4- Go to Israel
5- Go to Antarctica
6- See my son grow older and be happy!
7- See my older brother live to a ripe old age
8- Skydiving ? Maybe ?
9- Meet President Obama, if that's ever possible.
10- Meet Presidents Carter and Clinton, if that's ever possible.
11- Go see the DU servers (nerd joke)
12- Pretend I'm a badass and ride a big Harley to Daytona Beach/Sturgis
13- Lots of other stuff that I'm too half-asleep to remember

Ok, your turn.

Can you have two different phones on your cell phone account ?

I already have an Android phone on my account. I was considering, eventually, getting a Windows phone. Keeping both of them active, if I can. Do they let you do that, or do you usually have to choose only one ? Thanks.

as I've explained at least 3 times now....if you look...

Dred Scott and Korematsu are FAR worse in my opinion. My values.

You disagree obviously. Civil rights for PoC trump Bush v. Gore ANY FUCKING DAY in my book.

That's how I feel. I really don't give a shit how many people disagree with me on DU, not changing my mind on this one.

Good day sir.

Private charities versus government programs: why conservatism fails

I'm sure you all have heard this a billion times. The private sector needs to help people, not the goddamn gubmint. If the private sector was so wonderfully helpful, generous and kind, I daresay people would have survived the Great Depression a lot easier. There would be no need for SNAP. If SNAP was abolished today (an impossibility but bear with me here), how would all those millions of people eat ? I don't think there's enough private charity to feed all those people. Somehow I think the food pantries would be bare very quickly.

Conservatives have no freaking idea what the nineteenth century was like. What's worse, they don't fucking care.

Hunter's thread inspired this rant.
