New York Times: Trump administration asking states to delay release of unemployment numbers

https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/20/politics/labor-department-states-unemployment-numbers-coronavirus/index.html

The Trump administration is asking state labor officials amid the coronavirus pandemic to keep the exact number of unemployment claims under embargo until the total national number is published in a weekly government report, according to The New York Times.

The Labor Department asked state officials in an email Wednesday to only "provide information using generalities to describe claims levels (very high, large increase)" and withhold exact figures, the Times reported.

"States should not provide numeric values to the public," Gay Gilbert, the administrator of the department's Office of Employment Insurance, wrote in her email obtained by the Times.

Government figures already show that Americans are starting to lose their jobs in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Before the pandemic hit the US, initial unemployment insurance claims were between roughly 210,000 and 230,000 a week.

Sky News UK in Bergamo Italy: "The shocking centre of the COVID-19 crisis"

The footage shows wards with more patients than they can handle. The staff seem overwhelmed.

The hospital's head of emergency care, Dr. Roberto Cosentini, told Sky News: "It's a very severe pneumonia, and so it's a massive strain for every health system, because we see every day 50 to 60 patients who come to our emergency department with pneumonia, and most of them are so severe they need very high volumes of oxygen."

He added: "And so we had to reorganize our emergency room and our hospital — three levels of intensive care."

Florida won't close its beaches. Here's exactly what DeSantis said about that.

https://www.politico.com/states/florida/story/2020/03/19/florida-wont-close-its-beaches-heres-exactly-what-desantis-said-about-that-1268185

But at a press conference Thursday, DeSantis stuck to his guns. In his own words, here’s what he said:

“We did an order, no gatherings on beaches, 10 or more. So what you’ve seen now is a lot of the sheriffs‘ departments have instituted protocols. I had the Brevard sheriff, he had his deputies on ATVs. They had a boat going down the coast and they’re telling people you’ve got to disburse. Cocoa Beach, major spring break destination, went down 70 percent since my order.

And so I think that’s a more prudent approach, to do social distancing. I just spoke to the U.S. surgeon general about it. Here’s the thing. They want you to social distance, of course. But they actually encourage people to get fresh air. They just don’t want you congregating in big groups. And so if you have a Floridian that goes and walks their dog, like a married couple on the beach, as long as you're not within six feet of each other, they view that as a healthy thing.

So I think it’s important to allow that if the local communities want to do it, to be able to do it.

Can you imagine if Trump had been President during World War 2 ?

"Oh, the Nazis just overran France ? Not your shipping clerk"

"Nazis bombing the UK every day ? Not your shipping clerk"

"Nazi subs patrolling waters off the USA ? Not your shipping clerk"

"Hitler declared war against the USA on December 12, 1941 ? Not your shipping clerk"

"Pearl Harbor ? Never heard of it. Besides, NOT YOUR FREAKING SHIPPING CLERK."

"You want me to ramp up production of tanks and other war materiels ? Not your shipping clerk"

You get the idea.

ORLANDO, Fla. —
Officials are hoping to open a drive-thru coronavirus testing site sometime next week.

The site was expected to open on Friday in the Orange County Convention Center parking lot.

FEMA and the Florida Department of Emergency Management said they are hoping to open the site early next week, though they would not speculate on what day. Officials said they will not open on Friday.

The convention center committed Monday to using a convention center parking lot as a testing site for the Central Florida region.
