Florida's medical marijuana proposal: Five things to know about Amendment 2

http://www.tampabay.com/news/politics/elections/floridas-medical-marijuana-proposal-five-things-to-know-about-amendment-2/2190045

Floridians will vote Nov. 4 on whether to legalize medical marijuana. What could it mean for patients, the health care industry and the burgeoning pot industry if the required 60 percent of voters say yes to pot? Here are some key facts to keep in mind:

1) Nobody will be buying or selling legal medical pot in Florida until late 2015 or early 2016

Amendment 2 gives the Florida Department of Health until early July to establish regulations to make the system work. The department then has until early October to license the first Medical Treatment Centers. Until then, no one can start growing, much less selling. The first harvest might not come in until late 2015 or beyond. Regulations may forbid Treatment Centers from importing pot from other states or countries for resale. And even if Florida does allow that, postal regulations. airline rules and state laws probably would make importation impractical. Imagine a truck full of pot driving from Colorado to Florida. If it gets stopped in Arkansas, authorities will not care that the pot is legal in both Colorado and Florida. Buyers probably will have to await the first harvest.

2) The regulations will fill in many missing details.

Britain arrests two in suspected female genital mutilation case

http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/07/26/us-britain-fgm-idUSKBN0FV0KU20140726

(Reuters) - British police have arrested two people in London on suspicion of conspiracy to carry out female genital mutilation (FGM) and placed a young girl in the care of social services, a police statement said on Saturday.

The arrests followed the arrival at the capital's Heathrow airport on Friday morning from Kampala of a 72-year-old Ugandan man accompanied by an 11-year-old girl, the statement said.

They came only days after London hosted a one-day summit on FGM and forced marriage where the government announced it would earmark 1.4 million pounds ($2.4 million) for a prevention program and prosecute parents allowing the practice.

The man was arrested in Newham, east London, on Saturday and a 40-year-old woman was also arrested in Hackney, northeast London, it said. Both remain in police custody.

Appeals court panel deals blow to Obamacare

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2014/07/21/obama-health-care-court-ruling/12482127/

WASHINGTON -- A federal appeals court dealt a potentially major blow to President Obama's health care law Tuesday, ruling that participants in health exchanges run by the federal government in 34 states are not eligible for tax subsidies.

The 2-1 ruling by a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, which is sure to be appealed by the government, threatens the framework of the health care system for about 5 million Americans without employer-provided health plans.

The case, filed by a coalition of states, employers and individuals, had been considered a long shot effort to derail the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. Federal district judges in the District of Columbia and Virginia previously had ruled for the government. Three similar cases remain pending.

The appeals panel ruled that as written, the health care law allows tax credits to be offered to qualified participants only in state-run exchanges. The administration had expected most if not all states to create their own, but only 16 states did so.

Germany remembers the plot to kill Hitler

http://www.dw.de/germany-remembers-the-plot-to-kill-hitler/a-17792469

July 20 marks the 70th anniversary of Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg's attempt to assassinate German Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler. His son and a former guard still have vivid memories of that day.

Berlin, July 20, 1944: Colonel Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg headed to Adolf Hitler's Wolf's Lair field headquarters. It was still early, just before 8 a.m., on the day Stauffenberg planned to kill Adolf Hitler with a bomb. It was too good an opportunity to miss: Stauffenberg was supposed to brief Hitler as part of his military duties.

Kurt Salterberg, now 91, was a guard at the Wolf's Lair, near what was then Rastenburg in East Prussia and today is the Polish town of Ketrzyn, some 600 kilometers (370 miles) east of Berlin. Back then, 21-year-old Salterberg was part of the team protecting the inner area.

At around 11 a.m. Stauffenberg and two co-conspirators, Major General Helmuth Stieff and First Lieutenant Werner von Haeften, entered the command headquarters of the Nazi regime. It was where the most powerful military figures would meet and where Hitler would hand out orders to his officers.

Florida father who beat up son’s alleged attacker speaks out

Daytona Beach, FL (WESH/CNN) – A Florida father who beat up his son’s alleged rapist has been hailed as a hero by many.

But he says his son is the one who is a true hero.

“My immediate feeling was to kill him so he will never hurt anyone again,” the father said.

We don’t identify child abuse victims or their relatives to protect the family.

Later in the article, it says the son (victim) stopped the father when the father went to get a butcher knife.
