As Bernie Sanders rises, attacks from the right get ugly

http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/bernie-sanders-rises-attacks-the-right-get-ugly

...Sen. Pat Roberts was getting a little desperate. The Kansas Republican, struggling in the polls, decided the way to hold onto his seat was to become as brazenly right-wing as possible, telling one audience, “We have to change course because our country is heading for national socialism.”

It was a curious moment. Pat Roberts, after spending more than three decades on Capitol Hill, was either arguing that America is headed towards Nazism or was using the phrase “national socialism” without knowing what it means.

About a year later, the phrase has popped up once more. National Review, ostensibly one of the leading media outlets in U.S. conservatism, published this piece from Kevin Williiamson about Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-Vt.) presidential campaign.

In the Bernieverse, there’s a whole lot of nationalism mixed up in the socialism. He is, in fact, leading a national-socialist movement, which is a queasy and uncomfortable thing to write about a man who is the son of Jewish immigrants from Poland and whose family was murdered in the Holocaust. But there is no other way to characterize his views and his politics.

These fucking morons, Senator Sanders is Jewish and the furthest thing from a fucking NAZI.

Windows Threshold Wave 2 Arriving Just 3 Months After Windows 10

http://www.windows10update.com/2015/07/windows-threshold-wave-2-arriving-just-3-months-after-windows-10/

Bring it on! Some new information about Windows Threshold Wave 2 is now making its way up, with sources close to the matter revealing what Microsoft is planning.

If the name sounds a little alien, then do know that Windows 10 was codenamed Threshold.

Meaning, this second wave is the first update to the operating system once it is released — the non-patch, no security update. The current timeline for this release is sometimes in October, the traditional launch timeframe that Redmond usually reserves for Windows proper.

This time, though, the company plans to roll out the first refresh for the operating system.

Trump insults Jeb Bush, Rick Perry, gives out Lindsey Graham's number

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-insults-jeb-bush-rick-perry-gives-out-lindsey-grahams-number/

Trump continued to aim his firepower on Jeb Bush saying, "I'm not a fan of Jeb Bush. Because Jeb Bush is in favor of Common Core, and he's weak on immigration. Those are two bad things."

Veterans Take Down Protester's Sign at Obama Speech

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/vets-take-down-protester-obama-speech-n395996

Veterans ripped a sign that read "The Emperor of Benghazi Has No Clothes" from a protester's hands as a group gathered for President Barack Obama's speech on veterans' issues in Pittsburgh.

The tussle occurred as the president spoke to the national convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars about stressing the need to honor soldiers' service.

The sign was a reference to the September 11, 2012, attacks on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya which resulted in the death of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.

Benghazi, jeez.

My sympathies, I don't know how you take it....

We white folks need to shut up and listen to black and brown folks, period. That includes at events like NRN. If that had occurred, both Bernie and O'Malley would have come out smelling like roses. Yes, I give O'Malley credit for his apology and then listening. I think Bernie is a good man, but, he and his staff need to do a lot of listening, especially to the BLM people.

I'm a member of a minority group (I think) here on DU, a southerner. I get annoyed at south-bashing, but hey, my annoyance is absolutely NOTHING compared to what the black community has to endure.

White folks...let's be quiet and listen...for a long time. Then speak, after being educated. Thank you, fellow white folks!

eta: To be clear, I think Governor O'Malley is a good man also. I would be happy with either of them as President.

FLORIDA GROUP: Florida nostalgia thread, pre-1980, remember when.....

Note: I am the host of this group. Please do NOT post any snark towards Florida, the south, southerners, etc in this thread. This is NOT the thread for that. I'm asking politely. Please go post snark in General Discussion. Thank you.

Ok, on with the thread. I chose 1980 as a very arbitrary date. I remember Florida before then, Orlando mainly. It was a lot less populated, more southern overall. Of course it had its flaws, but I enjoyed growing up where I did. I could go into a lot more detail, but I don't want to bore you.

What are your memories ?

If Scott Walker wins the election next year, I give up on this country

http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1014&pid=1151915

WASHINGTON -- Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) said over the weekend that the next president of the United States needed to be prepared to take aggressive military action on their very first day in office, including against Iran.

God help us if this belligerent moron wins. He's even worse than Trump. At least Trump hasn't said this insanity yet, but, yes, he might, give him time.

eta: Didn't Goldwater say things like this about Vietnam ? Nuking Vietnam ?

Russian billionaire: GET me some ALIENS ON THE PHONE. Do it NOW

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/07/20/russian_entrepreneur_slaps_100_million_bounty_on_et/

(yes original article headline)

Noted Russian biz lord Yuri Milner - already well known for handing out hefty prizes for physics discoveries - has now slapped down another hefty wad so as to kick the search for alien civilisation into higher gear.

A project he calls Breakthrough Listen will give SETI researchers access to the world's largest telescopes in hopes of picking up signals from other star systems. Despite theories suggesting thousands of potential extraterrestrial habitats for life along vaguely Earthly lines, any aliens that may exist have been giving Earth the silent treatment since serious search began in the 1960s.

Much of the cash pledged by Milner over the next 10 years will be used to secure observing time at the Robert C Byrd Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia and CSIRO's Parkes Telescope in New South Wales, Australia.

The rest will be split between acquiring equipment and hiring people. Milner has already assembled an impressive roll call of experts including the Astronomer Royal, Lord Martin Rees of Cambridge University, who will lead an advisory group; Peter Worden, former director of the NASA Ames Research Laboratory, home of the Kepler effort; and expert alien hunters Geoffrey Marcy and Dan Werthime from the University of California, Berkeley.

The world’s most famous climate scientist just outlined an alarming scenario for our planet’s future

James Hansen has often been out ahead of his scientific colleagues.

With his 1988 congressional testimony, the then-NASA scientist is credited with putting the global warming issue on the map by saying that a warming trend had already begun. “It is time to stop waffling so much and say that the evidence is pretty strong that the greenhouse effect is here,” Hansen famously testified. Since then, he has drawn headlines for accusing the Bush administration of trying to muzzle him, getting arrested protesting the Keystone XL Pipeline, and setting forward the case for why carbon dioxide levels need to be kept below 350 parts per million in the atmosphere (they’re currently around 400).

Now Hansen — who retired in 2013 from his NASA post, and is currently an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s Earth Institute — is publishing what he says may be his most important paper. Along with 16 other researchers — including leading experts on the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets — he has authored a lengthy study outlining an scenario of potentially rapid sea level rise combined with more intense storm systems.

It’s an alarming picture of where the planet could be headed — and hard to ignore, given its author. But it may also meet with considerable skepticism in the broader scientific community, given that its scenarios of sea level rise occur more rapidly than those ratified by the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in its latest assessment of the state of climate science, published in 2013.
