California’s Record Heat Is Like Nothing You’ve Ever Seen... Yet

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-08-15/california-s-record-heat-is-like-nothing-you-ve-ever-seen-yet.html

If hot thermometers actually exploded like they do in cartoons, there would be a lot of mercury to clean up in California right now.

The California heat this year is like nothing ever seen, with records that go back to 1895. The chart below shows average year-to-date temperatures in the state from January through July for each year. The orange line shows the trend rising 0.2 degrees Fahrenheit per decade.

The sharp spike on the far right of the chart is the unbearable heat of 2014. That’s not just a new record; it’s a chart-busting 1.4 degrees higher than the previous record. It’s an exclamation point at the end of a long declarative sentence.

GOPer Ernst: People On Medicaid Had No 'Personal Responsibility'

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/joni-ernst-medicaid-recipients-personal-responsibility

Iowa state Sen. Joni Ernst, the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in the state, seems to have argued that a chunk of Medicaid recipients do not have any "personal responsibility for their health."

The argument, made by Ernst in April, was flagged by The Plum Line's Greg Sargent on Friday. It was part of Ernst laying out her opposition to Iowa expanding Medicaid. Here's the key passage:

Participation in the broken Medicaid program has doubled over the past decade. Iowa has nearly 500,000 Medicaid enrollees. If the program is expanded, it is estimated the Medicaid population will grow by an additional 110,000 to 181,000 recipients who have no personal responsibility for their health and no accountability for the care provided.

Ernst's campaign told Sargent that she was referring to "bureaucrats overseeing the program." Here's the response from Ernst spokeswoman Gretchen Hamel:

Interesting note about Pacific Ocean north of Hawai'i

http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/comment.html?entrynum=2760

In the Central Pacific, Tropical Storm Julio, located about 700 miles north of Honolulu, Hawaii, is nearing its end as high wind shear rips away at it. Julio was a hurricane most of this week in the waters north of Hawaii where no hurricane had ever been recorded before. Ordinarily, hurricanes cannot exist in those waters because of sea surface temperatures that are near 25°C, which is too cold to support a hurricane. However, ocean temperatures have been near 26 - 26.5°C this week, which is about 1°C above average, and warm enough to support a hurricane.

Man Diagnosed With "Chronic" Homosexuality Sues Doctor

http://gawker.com/man-diagnosed-with-chronic-homosexuality-sues-doctor-1621114712

A 46-year-old Los Angeles man whose "homosexual behavior" is listed on his medical records as a "chronic problem" is suing his doctor and a healthcare network, reports NBC Los Angeles.

Matthew Moore's doctor listed his sexuality as such during a routine physical in April 2013. Moore then confronted his doctor, Elaine Jones, in June 2013 and she explained the description by saying that doctors go "back and forth" regarding classifying homosexuality as a chronic condition.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders once listed homosexuality as a sociopathic personality disturbance. It was later removed from the manual, which sets the standard for the classification of mental disorders in the U.S., in 1974.

According to Moore, after he complained to Jones' healthcare network, Torrance Memorial Physician Network, that homosexuality had been listed as a "chronic condition" on his record, the network apologized and said it would be changed. Ten months later, homosexuality was still on his record, now listed as a "chronic problem." Now Jones and Torrance have a problem of their own: Moore's lawsuit.
