Visiting a Gentleman with Alzheimer’s Disease

This is a very well written tribute by a friend of mine about his father, insights and really good advice about dealing with someone who has dementia. It strikes home as my father died a couple months ago of dementia.

Happy father's day to those who are gone or traveling this awful road.

My father has been living in residential care facilities since December 2014. I saw him on six consecutive days during the first week of June 2015.

The best guess is he has Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), and it is “the late stage.” I have resisted that diagnosis, perhaps because I carry genetic markers that give me a higher than average risk for this costly killer. Or perhaps I cringe at the stigma of dementia, whatever the symptoms or cause.

Whether AD will be my father’s final mortal diagnosis or not: He can’t take care of himself anymore, nor can my mother, nor my family, without constant assistance.....

Police confront man who was threatening members at South Richmond (black) church

Police confronted a man outside a South Richmond church who was beating on a church door, yelling racial slurs and threatening the congregation during a regular Thursday night service, according to police and one witness.

A police officer who was working security at United Nations Church International in the 5200 block of Midlothian Turnpike pointed a gun at the man, thinking he had a knife, according to police Capt. Chris Gleason.

The incident started about 8:45 p.m. when children inside the black church saw a white man banging on the door, using a racial slur and saying, "You're taking over," according to Lydia Jones, a church member.....

Craig Cobb (oops, not white supremacist) invites pool cop Eric Casebolt to join his community

Not The Onion.

Well, it looks like Eric Casebolt has some fans! Some supporters of Craig Cobb, a white nationalist with a dream, a dream to create a town full of only white people, would like to invite the McKinney cop–known for sitting on a teenage black girl for no reason while she cried for her mother–to join them in setting it up.

You may remember Cobb from when he attempted to set this up last year in Leith, North Dakota–particularly the part where he went on TV and had his DNA tested on a talk show only to discover that he was not quite as purely “white” as he thought, and that in fact his genetic profile was 86 percent European and 14 percent sub-Saharan African. Whoops!

Still, Cobb has kept the dream alive. Although the residents of Leith chased him out, he has new plans to turn the town of Antler, North Dakota into an Aryan paradise with only white people allowed....

Woman who started pool fight placed on leave

After a video of a 15 year old African-American teen being slammed into the ground by McKinney Police Officer Eric Casebolt went viral over the weekend, a twitter campaign was launched to identify the woman involved in the fight that led to police being called. Tracey Carver-Allbritton has now been placed on administrative leave by her employer, CoreLogic Inc.

While the primary focus of the incident in McKinney, TX has been calling for the termination of now resigned Corporal Eric Casebolt, Twitter launched an impromptu campaign to identify the two women confirmed to have made racist comments that led to the fight and the police being called in the first place. The video begins with an adult white woman and what appears to be a much younger African American girl locked in a fight, with each holding the others hair attempting to throw punches. A group of black teens initially act as observers but eventually try to separate the two. Another woman, now known as Tracey-Carver Allbritton, at first seems to be trying to break up the fight, but quickly decides to start throwing punches to the top of the younger girls head. After a few seconds the fight is broken up and both parties go their separate ways.

Eric Casebolt: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know, including Racial Bias lawsuit (pool party cop)

(clip) After delivering the lecture, Casebolt goes up to the group of girls, and warns them not to “keep standing there running your mouths,” and tells them to leave “now.” The video shows a 15-year-old black girl, Dajerria Becton, walking away with the group. She then stops and turns back towards Casebolt and it’s not clear if she says something to him. Casebolt charges after her and grabs her by the arm, dragging her to the ground.

2. He Was Accused of Racial Bias & Pulling Down a Black Man’s Pants in a Federal Lawsuit
Federal court documents show that Casebolt and other officers were sued in 2008 in federal court for racial profiling, harassment, failure to render aid and sexual assault. Albert E. Brown Jr. accused Casebolt of reaching into his “private area” and pulling his pants “down below ankles” during the traffic stop.

Protesting unfairness and DU's moderating system

One thing the last couple days has shown me is how many here do not understand how DU's moderating system works.

Or how to protest what they see as unfairness, whether it is banning or not banning a poster, hiding or not hiding a post, locking or not locking a thread. There are ways to protest that help, and ways that just cause more problems.

Protest what you see as unfairness, whether is is a poster, a post, a lock, a hide. We need to continue to provide input into DU, but please, please, try to do it in a way that causes fewer issues, not create more.

Let me make it simple.

1) At the bottom of EVERY page on DU is a Contact link. That is the best way to contact Admin, or use Ask the Admin forum if you do not mind your questions/comments becoming public once they answer there. Posting in other forums will not get a message to them as they, like the rest of us, do not read everything here. Notice how little they post? Don't assume they would read anything except that which is sent directly to them.

2) DU no longer has Moderators named that. They do, however, have a moderating system.

Instead of utilizing a single group of all-powerful moderators whose job is to handle every aspect of forum moderation (deleting posts, locking threads, banning troublemakers, etc.), we recruit different groups of people to handle different pieces of the system.

DU Juries are made up of discussion forum members who have opted to allow themselves to be selected at random whenever a Jury is needed. Juries handle potential violations of Democratic Underground's Community Standards. For more information see the DU Juries section below.

Forum and Group Hosts are discussion forum members who volunteer to serve in a particular forum or group. Their role is to deal with posts which may violate a particular forum or group's Statement of Purpose. Forum hosts cannot serve for more than 90 days at a time. Group hosts may serve indefinitely. Members must meet certain criteria before they are permitted to serve as Hosts. For more information see the Forum and Group Hosts section below.

The Malicious Intruder Removal Team (MIR Team) is made up of discussion forum members who volunteer to serve. Their role is to keep the discussion forum clear of conservative trolls, spammers, and other undesireables. MIR Team members cannot serve for more than 90 days at a time. Members must meet certain criteria before they are permitted to serve on the MIR Team. For more information see the Malicious Intruder Removal Team section below.

The DU Administrators oversee the operation of the website. They enforce the website Terms of Service, occasionally review decisions made by the MIR Team or Forum Hosts, and deal with long-term members who cause problems. There are three Administrators and they can be contacted here.

There are links within that that lead to more explanations if you so chose to learn about them. Please take time to look through at least this basic information as the more we learn about how this site works, the better for us all.

Thank you.

How to notify MIRT about a potential MI, troll

If you see a troll, a MI, or serve on a jury and think MIRT should get notice you have a couple options to let them know.

1. If a post is hidden by 4/3 or more of a jury and the poster has under 100 posts, MIRT will get notice. If a post is not hidden, they will not. If the vote is Leave, MIRT will NOT get notice.

Simply writing in the comments things like this and leaving will not necessarily get notice to MIRT unless enough others vote to hide or someone sends a team member a pm.
"If it's a troll leaving then the troll will be dealt with by MIRT."

2. Send a MIR team member a message. There is always a link to the current team in Announcements forum.

Thank you.

ETA, MIRT takes care of those under 100 posts so for those worried about trying to get rid of long term DUers, that is up to Admin.

Persuade me why Martin should the democratic candidate without

posting negatives about anyone else. I would like to know why I should support him, without using drawbacks or flaws of any other candidate.
