Real estate mogul Donald Trump has spent over $1 million exploring a potential presidential bid in 2016, the New York Post reports.
The billionaire, who repeatedly teased running for the 2012 Republican nomination only to stay out of the race, has reportedly spent the cash to research interest in his potential bid in each state.
“The electoral research was commissioned. We did not spend $1 million on this research for it just to sit on my bookshelf,” Trump's special counsel Michael Cohen told the Post. “At this point Mr. Trump has not made any decision on a political run, but what I would say is that he is exactly what this country needs. The turnout at these political speeches indicates his following remains very strong and is growing.“
Trump, who sparked controversy in 2011 with his calls for President Barack Obama to release his birth certificate, has already started to make the rounds at GOP events. ..................(more)

(Toronto Star) “The artist’s work dealt mostly with climate change, and was advocating a message that was contrary to the government’s policies on the subject.”
It cannot be easy being the “artist,” the subject of this 2011 email by a Foreign Affairs and International Trade spokesman, especially when her “contrary” message apparently cost her federal funding for a European art tour.
Franke James, the artist in question, first got mad — now she is getting even.
James, a Toronto-based activist with no shortage of gumption and political acumen, has turned the federal government’s efforts to silence her into a new book. ....................(more)

Carmen Reinhart and Kenneth Rogoff, the Harvard economists whose influential pro-austerity study was recently exposed as being seriously flawed, have penned a scathing open letter to New York Times columnist Paul Krugman, a major critic of their work and one of the leading voices in the anti-austerity movement. In the long-winded letter posted to Reinhart’s website Saturday, the pair accuse the Nobel Prize-winning economist of “uncivil behavior” and criticize him for being “selective and shallow” in his characterization of their research.
“We admire your past scholarly work, which influences us to this day,” the letter reads. “So it has been with deep disappointment that we have experienced your spectacularly uncivil behavior the past few weeks. You have attacked us in very personal terms, virtually non-stop, in your New York Times column and blog posts. Now you have doubled down in the New York Review of Books, adding the accusation we didn’t share our data. Your characterization of our work and of our policy impact is selective and shallow. It is deeply misleading about where we stand on the issues. And we would respectfully submit, your logic and evidence on the policy substance is not nearly as compelling as you imply.”
They continue: “You particularly take aim at our 2010 paper on the long-term secular association between high debt and slow growth. That you disagree with our interpretation of the results is your prerogative. Your thoroughly ignoring the subsequent literature, however, including the International Monetary Fund’s work as well as our own deeper and more complete 2012 paper with Vincent Reinhart, is troubling. Perhaps, acknowledging the updated literature—not to mention decades of theoretical, empirical, and historical contributions on drawbacks to high debt—would inconveniently undermine your attempt to make us a scapegoat for austerity. You write ‘Indeed, Reinhart-Rogoff may have had more immediate influence on public debate than any previous paper in the history of economics.’ ” ..................(more)

(Bloomberg) “Blue Is the Warmest Colour,” a graphic lesbian love story directed by Abdellatif Kechiche, won the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, where Steven Spielberg headed the jury.
The runner-up Grand Prix went to Joel Coen and Ethan Coen’s “Inside Llewyn Davis,” with Justin Timberlake. And in the best-actor category, Michael Douglas -- who played the eccentric pianist Liberace in Steven Soderbergh’s “Behind the Candelabra” -- lost out to Bruce Dern, the wandering old man in Alexander Payne’s “Nebraska.”
Critics adored the winning movie, known in French as “La Vie D’Adele -- Chapitre 1 & 2.” Its three-hour story is about a 15-year-old girl whose life is transformed when she meets a young woman with short blue hair. Spielberg, announcing the Palme d’Or winner on stage at the closing ceremony, said it also went to actresses Lea Seydoux and Adele Exarchopoulos.
Stepping up to the microphone, the film’s French-Tunisian director dedicated his prize “to the great youth of France, who I met during the lengthy shoot, and who taught me a great deal about the spirit of freedom and togetherness.” .......................(more)

About That Apple Tax Dodge

When I wrote about Apple’s tax dodge, some people responded, and I saw other similar comments, that Apple was just doing what was legal and you can’t fault a company for taking advantage of the tax code. Which sort of missed the point.

When I wrote about Apple’s tax dodge, some people responded, and I saw other similar comments, that Apple was just doing what was legal and you can’t fault a company for taking advantage of the tax code. Which sort of missed the point.
I think the good folks at the Citizens for Tax Justice have it right:
First, our corporate tax system is failing to do its job of taxing corporate profits. Second, virtually no one in America can understand this until someone explains how individual corporations are dodging their taxes. Third, the corporations themselves will, quite naturally, lobby Congress to defend and even expand the loopholes that facilitate their tax dodging.
And, even better:
The truth is that corporations like Apple lobby for as many tax loopholes and breaks as they can get. We may see them as morally culpable. Or we may think it’s natural for people to ask for the very best deal they can get — just as children naturally argue for the latest bedtime possible and the largest quantity of ice cream possible.

A university spokesman confirmed Saturday night what was initially reported by WNDU's Angelo Di Carlo: that Everett Golson, the quarterback of Notre Dame's best season in nearly two decades, is no longer enrolled at Notre Dame.
The reasons behind Golson's stunning departure were not given by the school, citing privacy laws. A source contacted Saturday night was unaware of the impetus behind the split between Golson and Notre Dame.
Blue and Gold Illustrated's Dan Murphy is reporting the reason why Golson is no longer enrolled at the school had to do with an honor code violation. A number of Notre Dame players took to Twitter after the news broke, and most seemed stunned or unhappy by what transpired:
"THIS IS SOME BS," tweeted defensive end Stephon Tuitt. ....................(more)

The Partnership for Civil Justice Fund has obtained documents that prove OWS protesters encamped in Terry Schrunk Plaza in Portland, Oregon, were evicted for political and business reasons - not for the reasons the city stated, which were health and safety concerns. The documents also shed light on police activity in Boston and across the nation in terms of the OWS movement in general. The Resident (aka Lori Harfenist) talks about the issue.
