Suspected rogue Afghan soldier kills 2 NATO soldiers

KABUL | Mon Mar 26, 2012 4:41am EDT

(Reuters) - A gunman wearing an Afghan army uniform killed two NATO troops in southern Afghanistan on Monday, NATO's International Security Assistance Force said, in what appeared to be the latest attack by rogue Afghan security forces on Western troops.

The attacker was shot dead by NATO force soldiers, the force said in a statement. It did not identify the two NATO soldiers or give their nationality.

The incident took place in Lashkar Gah in the southern Helmand province, an Afghan security source said.

So-called insider attacks have mounted in recent months as tension between Afghanistan and its foreign backers rises over a series of incidents including the burning of Korans at a NATO base and the killing of 17 villagers in southern Kandahar for which a U.S. soldier has been charged.

Man lives to tell of Florida "Shoot First" horror

By Tom Brown

MIAMI (Reuters) - On June 5, 2006, not long after Florida enacted the first "Stand Your Ground" law in the United States, unarmed Jason Rosenbloom was shot in the stomach and chest by his next-door neighbor after a shouting match over trash.

Exactly what happened that day in Clearwater, Florida, is still open to dispute. Kenneth Allen, a retired police officer, said he shot Rosenbloom because he was trying to storm into his house.

Rosenbloom told Reuters in a telephone interview this week he never tried to enter the house and was in Allen's yard, about 10 feet from his front door, when he was shot moments after he put his hands up.

Now living in Hawaii, Rosenbloom said he had been unaware of the growing outrage over last month's shooting in Sanford, Florida, of an unarmed black teenager by a neighborhood watch captain.

Police arrest 14 in two New York Occupy protests

NEW YORK | Sat Mar 24, 2012 10:34pm EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Fourteen protesters were arrested on Saturday in separate Occupy Wall Street protests in New York, one that involved an hours-long march through Manhattan streets and a second at the United Nations, authorities said.

Several hundred protesters zig-zagged from Zuccotti Park in lower Manhattan where the anti-Wall Street Occupy movement was born last year to Union Square Park in what was billed as a demonstration against police brutality.

Protesters carried banners that said "end police brutality" and signs that questioned such as "Angry Pacifist", "Shame on NYPD", and "They never stop & frisk old white guys like me."

Ten protesters were arrested in that demonstration, which lasted about four hours, mainly for disorderly conduct, police said. It was not clear what formal charges were issued.

Police Lt. Mark Coit said a threatening note was discovered "very close to where the victim was found," but he did not disclose other details of the note. The family said they had found a similar note earlier this month but did not report it to authorities, Coit said

Sura Alzaidy, a family friend, told UT San Diego the note told the family to “go back to your own country. You’re a terrorist.”

Obama meets Hawaiian woman, asks to see her birth certificate

By David Ferguson

Well, Rahm Emmanuel may be long gone from the White House, but some small aspect of his “Never let a crisis go to waste” philosophy clearly lives on in our Commander in Chief. Hectored since even before his inauguration about questions regarding his legitimacy as an American citizen, President Obama has decided that when life gives you “birthers,” you should make birth certificate jokes.

At an event in Oklahoma today, the president was shaking hands with some of the people assembled to meet him. One woman announced that she and the president have Hawaii in common as their place of birth.

“Oh, you’re Hawaiian like me?” he asked, smiling, “Well, do you have your birth certificate?”

Trinity Broadcasting Network ‘funds owners’ exorbitant lifestyle’

By Peter Beaumont, The Guardian
Friday, March 23, 2012 13:20 EDT

The world’s largest Christian TV channel, the California-based Trinity Broadcasting Network, has become embroiled in a multimillion dollar financial scandal after members of the family that founded it alleged widespread embezzlement.

The claims – by Brittany Koper, whose grandfather Paul Crouch founded TBN, and by Joseph McVeigh, another family member – describe exorbitant spending on mansions in California, Tennessee and Florida, private jets and even a $100,000-mobile home to house the dogs of Crouch’s flamboyant wife, Janice.

The network, which claims to broadcast in every continent except the Antarctic and has 18,000 affiliates, was set up by Crouch in the 1970s and preaches a so-called “prosperity gospel” which promises material rewards to those who give generously.

According to the lawsuit, reported in a number of US newspapers, Paul Crouch Sr obtained a $50m luxury jet for his personal use through a “sham loan”, while church funds – many of which come from donations during events like its “Praise-a-thons” – paid for the mobile home housing his wife’s dogs.

Pressure Mounts for Transparency in Manning Court-Martial

Thursday, March 22, 2012

By ADAM KLASFELD

MANHATTAN (CN) - A lawyer from a civil libertarian group representing Wikileaks and Julian Assange urged a military judge to release records related to the court-martial of Pfc. Bradley Manning, the alleged source for the biggest leak in U.S. history.

- snip -

In a March 12 letter to Pentagon lawyer Jeh Johnson, more than 40 news organizations wrote that the government showed greater transparency with the cases of Guantanamo detainees than with that of Manning: "As such, the coalition respectfully urges the government to implement similar reforms in its regulations governing court-martial proceedings generally and that of Manning specifically to ensure that military personnel tried stateside have the same rights to a public trial as those afforded accused terrorists," the letter states.

Ratner, on behalf of Assange and Wikileaks, joined that effort on Thursday, in a letter to the presiding military judge, Col. Denise Lind, which he copied to the Pentagon.

The letter quoted 6th Circuit Judge Damon Keith's grim warning, "Democracies die behind closed doors," from an opinion in the case of Detroit Free Press v. Ashcroft, which forced immigration courts to open proceedings of defendants with suspected ties to the Sept. 11 attacks.

Florida governor appoints new prosecutor in investigation into killing of unarmed black teen

By: The Associated Press
03/22/2012 6:43 PM
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida's governor has appointed a new prosecutor to oversee the investigation into last month's shooting death of an unarmed black teenager.

Gov. Rick Scott late Thursday appointed Angela B. Corey to oversee the investigation into the death of Trayvon Martin.

She is the prosecutor for the Jacksonville area. Scott said this came after the local prosecutor for the central Florida county where the shooting happened, Norman Wolfinger, volunteered to recuse himself.

Martin's parents have complained that the 28-year-old shooter, George Zimmerman, has not been charged after he claimed self-defence.

Man throws fire bomb at Democratic state senator Wendy Davis’ office in Texas

By Eric W. Dolan
Wednesday, March 21, 2012 0:20 EDT

At least two fire bombs were thrown at the Fort Worth office of state Sen. Wendy Davis (D) on Tuesday night, according to the Star Telegram.

Davis was not in her office at the time, but some staff members were present. They used a fire extinguisher to put out the small blaze.

No one was injured in the attack, but the lawmaker’s office was damaged by the fire.

“It’s unfortunate when things like this happen in the public arena,” she said. “It reminds us of how important it is for us to remain very civil in our discourse and to work not to foment this kind of anger in our community as we discuss things that are challenges that we all face and care about.”

Martin’s girlfriend recalls final conversation before shooting

By Andrew Jones
Tuesday, March 20, 2012 9:25 EDT

Trayvon Martin’s girlfriend told ABC News late Monday night her final phone conversation with him before he was shot dead by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman.

The girl, whose parents requested not to make her name public, was questioned by the Martin family’s attorney Benjamin Crump and described that her boyfriend was cornered by Zimmerman.

“He said this man was watching him, so he put his hoodie on,” she said. “He said he lost the man. I asked Trayvon to run, and he said he was going to walk fast. I told him to run but he said he was not going to run.”

“Trayvon said, ‘What, are you following me for.’ And the man said, ‘What are you doing here.’ Next thing I hear is somebody pushing, and somebody pushed Trayvon because the head set just fell. I called him again and he didn’t answer the phone.”
