Number of Uninsured Drops 8.8 Million
Poverty Rate Holds Steady, but Number of Uninsured Drops
By ROBERT PEARSEPT. 16, 2015
WASHINGTON The number of people without health insurance dropped last year by 8.8 million, to a total of 33 million, but there was no statistically significant change in income for the typical American household, the Obama administration said Wednesday.
Median household income in the United States was $53,660 last year, the Census Bureau reported.
In addition, it said, there was no meaningful change in the official poverty rate 14.8 percent in 2014. About 46.7 million people were in poverty, the bureau said.
This was the fourth consecutive year in which the number of people in poverty was not statistically different from the official estimate for the prior year.

California's Sierra Nevada Snowpack Just Hit a 500-Year Low

Thanks to higher temperatures and lower precipitation levels, the Sierra Nevada snowpack in Northern California has dipped to its lowest level in the past 500 years, a new study has found.
This is just the latest in a series of studies of the declining Western snowpack, which can fuel wildfires, limit drinking water and cause agricultural irrigation systems to run dry, all symptoms of a changing climate.
In the latest paper, researchers from the University of Arizona used previously published tree-ring data, which reflects annual winter precipitation from 1405 to 2005, as well as snowpack measures since the '30s. The findings indicate a loss unprecedented not just for the modern era, but for the past five centuries.
"Our study really points to the extreme character of the 2014-15 winter, Valerie Trouet, an associate professor of dendrochronology at the UA Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research, said in a press release.
We should be prepared for this type of snow drought to occur much more frequently because of rising temperatures.

Summer 2015 set to be world's hottest ever as US temperatures again soar

New data showing that the US had its 12th-hottest summer on record may not, at first glance, appear particularly significant or alarming.
But in announcing the news, climate scientists have pointed out that, of the 11 American summers that were recorded as warmer than 2015s, seven have occurred in the last 15 years; the other four were all during the Dustbowl 1930s heatwaves that plagued the US during the Great Depression.
And, as part of the climate warming trend globally, next Thursday a federal agency is set to announce the latest worldwide figures that are likely to show that it was officially the hottest summer ever recorded on the planet, and the hottest first eight months of the year to date.
- snip -
On Thursday its expected officially to be confirmed that the first eight months have been the warmest on record so far and the warmest three-month period June to August, constituting the hottest summer ever logged for the northern hemisphere.
Crouch pointed out that in the first seven months of 2015, worldwide figures had shown that the globe was almost a degree warmer than average and August figures are likely to have been boosted by the strengthening El Niño pattern.
Its extraordinary how much of the ocean is at record warm temperatures about 75% to 80% of the worlds oceans are at record or near record warmth, he said.

U.S. government blocks release of new CIA torture details

By David Rohde
NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. government officials have blocked the release of 116 pages of defense lawyers' notes detailing the torture that Guantanamo Bay detainee Abu Zubaydah says he experienced in CIA custody, defense lawyers said on Thursday.
The treatment of Zubaydah, who lost one eye and was waterboarded 83 times in a single month while held by the CIA, according to government documents, has been the focus of speculation for years.
"We submitted 116 pages in 10 separate submissions," Joe Margulies, Zubaydahs lead defense lawyer, told Reuters. "The government declared all of it classified."
Margulies and lawyers for other detainees said that the decision showed that the Obama administration plans to continue declaring detainees accounts of their own torture classified. A Central Intelligence Agency spokesperson declined to comment.
