Friend: This Was No ‘Parking’ Murder
http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/02/12/friend-this-was-no-parking-murder.htmlTragically, less than a week later, that very thing may have happened in North Carolina.
Yes, I know that we cant be certain at this moment exactly why the gunman murdered three Muslim-American studentsDeah Shaddy Barakat, 23; Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha, 21; and Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19in cold blood. And true, the local police have noted that its preliminary investigation indicates that the crime was motivated by an ongoing neighbor dispute over parking.
But I doubt very much that anti-Muslim hate didnt play some role in this attack. I say that based on a few factors. One is my conversation with two close friends of the victims and the comments made by the father of the two sisters killed. Second, we cant ignore that on the day of the shooting we saw wall-to-wall media coverage about the death of the American aid worker and ISIS hostage Kayla Mueller. And finally, we have to factor in the overall rise in anti-Muslim rhetoric we have witnessed on both the right and the left recently.
I may have missed it, but I don't believe this has been posted on DU. The entire piece is worth a read.
Muslims in this country are scared; they are concerned. They have every right to be and I wish they did not.
The rhetoric is getting far too ratcheted up.

Today is his one month anniversary with us. HE has happily gained a point (needs about 4 more) and is getting above nicely with our three kittehs, I thought it would be nice to share some of them with you!
Duke with his Pa(w):
When he falls asleep at night he is like a floppy floppy muppet.
Hanging out at our fave mexican El Salvadorian place (the weather was 70 degrees this past sunday you bet we went out for margaritas and lunch!)
This crazy dog actually loves watching YouTube videos, here is is watching birds, but he also likes to watch the Stephanie Miller show on FSTV!)
He who statures at birds
(really, he just stares at them.)
Here he just looks happy, and wants to sing for the Spring to get here!
A few weeks ago I found a Facebook group called People United to Promote the Proper Identification of English Setters and hubby put up some of these pictures to the group.
A woman replied and said that he looked just like one of her dogs puppies. At this point, all we knew about Duke was that he was surrendered in West Virginia. Strange coincidence, This woman was from W. Va too and her Dogs name was Sadie May. That kinda made me curious as Duke had a sister at our shelter called Ellie may. I told her that and what Duke original name was and we were all shocked that it was indeed her former dog.
She was going thru a lot of things in her life and could not keep three dogs. So she felt the best thing was to surrender them with a guarantee that they would find good homes. She still has the momma Dog, Sadie.
She is so happy about this and we are going to try to find out where Ellie may have went.
The very best part is that she took tons of pictures of him growing up. Just yesterday Hubby and I were wondering what he looked like as a puppy.
So here is a picture of Duke as a puppy!
The chances of this happening are amazing!

Anyone here ever learned a new language with Rosetta Stone?
Is it worth it? Does it work? What was your experience?
We are going to Paris later on this year and I want to be able to understand French.
Thanks for any input you have!
Raine
Please welcome me in joining our new Family member: Sir Duke!!!
(cross posted from the Pets group)
Hubby thought of Duke at first and then I realized, since he's an english setter, he deserved a proper name: Sir Duke.
And then I realized Sir Duke is one of my favorite songs ever! He's a two year old English Setter. We adopted him from the Welfare league of Alexandria.
So
. he has a theme song that matches his personality and the feeling it bring with him coming home to us!

Happy New year, DU.
It's been a tough one for so many, I just wanted to tell each and every one of you, I appreciate you and this place we call Democratic Undergound.
I appreciate you and what your words here mean to me!
Question about the Excerpt button:
It used to be that I could highlight a block of text and use excerpt in order to have quoted parts of an article have a gray background.
Right now, it appears as tho 'block quote' and 'excerpt' have the same function and the graying out is no longer there. Was there a change I missed and if so, why was it changed?
ETA: From the W&H HTML look up table post:
Create a styled, indented blockquote
(useful for posting excerpts from articles)
Create an indented blockquote
(without color background)

I hope you had a wonderful holiday!
