Burma’s First Girl Band Pushes Boundaries

Burma’s First Girl Band Pushes Boundaries
by Heidi Mitchell Apr 5, 2012 4:45 AM EDT
How do you know a country is ripe for democracy? When it's got an all-girl band singing about freedom.

If there is one clear sign that Burma is in the midst of a political and cultural shift, it's in its music scene.

Two years ago, the only pop songs being generated in the country were “copy tracks,” slavishly reproduced hits copying international stars like Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, and various “K-Pop” idols from South Korea. The country was in mired in decades of military rule, its people reluctant to speak out against political leaders for fear of brutal repercussions. "Democracy" was a loaded word.

<snip>

Five were chosen by May. Rather than basing her selections on looks, she says, she picked candidates for their outspokenness and energy. Each of the girls had a college degree, ranging from computer science to Russian. Their band name: Tiger Girls.

Their first track was a cover of Jamaican rapper Sean Kingston’s “Fire Burning,” which they debuted to a crowd of 3,000 in Mandalay during the annual Thingyan Festival, Burma’s New Year Festival. The audience, May recalls, was initially shocked at the sight of five girls singing a blend of English and Burmese lyrics, and dancing in styles that flew in the face of the country's social conservativism. Then they started to get into it.

Me N Ma Girls Official Music Video

'Kickit' was written by the girls and Nikki. Playing with the all-American dream! Influenced like many countries by football madness. Such a great release! The chant in the final part of the song is a chant known by all kids in Myanmar - "if you win you get the golden egg, if you loose you eat the chicken shit!"

Here’s A More Realistic Look At Google’s Project Glass [Video]

Because walking and texting isn’t dangerous enough, Google Glasses will put AdSense 5mm in front of your retina. Disclaimer: I actually don’t know if Google plans on using in ads in their glasses.

The video above comes by way of Reddit and was made by Tom Scott. It humorously shows what the future could hold through the eyes of Project Glass. Of course the Google Glasses are likely made in such a way that they won’t completely dominate a person’s field of vision but there’s no way they won’t be distracting to some. Instead of walking with their head down looking at their phone, pedestrians are going to wander around in a zombie-like stupor, completely immersed in a YouTube video being shown on their glasses. I can’t wait.

To My Unborn Child, If You're a 'Fag', I'll Kill You: VIDEO

Charlotte Moore, the creator of this new PSA, writes:

In early March, the hashtag "#tomyunbornchild" became a worldwide trend on Twitter. By and large, these tweets were loving, hopeful messages to the next generation -- but many people saw it as an opportunity to express hate speech towards LGBT children.

Reading their bile, the only thing I could think was: how would we feel if we heard actual parents saying this to actual children? I got the idea on a Thursday. By Sunday, we -- me, my boyfriend, and whatever friends we could find to help us -- had it filmed.

It's easy to dehumanize hate speech online because we've gotten so used to seeing it. We tell ourselves that it's the product of trolls, of random, anonymous strangers. Except they're not. They're real people. Many of them will be parents. And some of their children will be gay. But what can we DO about it? I don't think there are any easy answers.

Whenever you believe life begins, I hope we can all agree: life is essential, and rare, and precious. We can't stop anyone from having kids. But we can resolve to stop this toxic cycle. We can wish better for our own children. And we can support the kids who weren't so lucky.

Anchorage In Uproar: Anti-Gay Hate Group Exposed For Encouraging Voter Fraud

The anti-gay hate group formed by a coalition of local churches has been exposed for encouraging voter fraud in yesterday's Anchorage referendum on LGBT rights. As the Facebook screenshot caught by the blog Bent Alaska proves, No On 5 called for unregistered voters to illegally register and vote on the same day. Voter registration for yesterday's election actually closed thirty days ago.

No On 5's Facebook posting was called out immediately by a commenter who was instantly shouted down and told "go back to your pervert website!" Despite a chorus of objections, the post remained up. Bent Alaska's expose has been picked up by local television.

Deputy Municipal Clerk Jacqueline Duke told KTVA because of misinformation election workers have an influx of thousands of questioned ballots coming in. The problem was caused by the controversial Prop 5 initiative that would add legal protections against discrimination to also include sexual orientation and transgender identity. The opponents of the proposition, led by the Alaska Family Council's Jim Minnery, put a message on its “Vote No on Prop 5” website saying people could both register to vote and cast their ballot today. That is not case as both city and state laws state you have to register at least 30 days before an election for it to count.

Jenna Talackova allowed back in Miss Universe competition

Source: Ottowa Citizen

VANCOUVER — Beauty queen Jenna Talackova, who was kicked out the Miss Universe Canada competition last month, will be allowed to compete after all, the organization announced Monday — if she can prove she meets the "legal gender recognition requirements of Canada" and other international competitions.

The brief statement issued by the organization did not specify what such requirements entail.

Talackova, 23, was dropped from the pageant two weeks ago "because I am not 'natural born,' " the Vancouver native wrote in an email to the Vancouver Sun at the time. "That doesn't make sense because since I was conscious I always felt this way."

<snip>

Talackova says she has known she was a female since she was four years old. She began hormone therapy at 14 and had sex reassignment surgery in 2010.

Jenna Talackova, Transgender Miss Universe Canada Finalist, Defended By Bill O'Reilly

A transgender beauty queen who made international headlines after being disqualified from the Miss Universe Canada pageant has found an unlikely supporter.

As Think Progress is reporting, conservative commentator Bill O'Reilly spoke out in defense of Jenna Talackova on Fox News last week.

Asked O'Reilly: "What right does the Miss Universe pageant have to violate this lady’s right to be a woman? They are basically saying because you weren’t born a woman you don’t have a right to be a woman..[it] doesn’t sound right to me."

GLAAD Is Working with Miss Universe Organization on Inclusion for Transgender Women

GLAAD responded to the Miss Universe Organization's decision to allow a transgender contestant to compete after she was disqualified from the Miss Universe Canada competition last month.

GLAAD contacted the Miss Universe Organization last week after Jenna Talackova was disqualified and called on the Miss Universe Organization to review Jenna's situation, as well as open the competition to transgender women.

The Miss Universe Organization said in a statement tonight:

“The Miss Universe Organization will allow Jenna Talackova to compete in the 2012 Miss Universe Canada pageant provided she meets the legal gender recognition requirements of Canada, and the standards established by other international competitions.”

GLAAD will continue working with The Miss Universe Organization to review current policies and update for full inclusion of transgender women.
