After Rape Comment Akin Still Leads McCaskill In Brand New Missouri Poll

After Rape Comment Akin Still Leads McCaskill In Brand New Missouri Poll

Congressman Todd Akin is still leading his Missouri senatorial opponent, Claire McCaskill, in the race for her U.S. Senate seat, even after Akin’s offensive comments on rape. A new PPP poll taken yesterday finds the race has narrowed, with Akin in the lead 44% to 43%. As these Polltracker images show, the PollTracker average now gives Akin a 4.3 point lead, down from his 8.7 points pre-rape comments average.

“But PPP’s takeaway is that Akin could still win this thing,” the Washington Post notes. “Whether he can survive the pressure from Republicans to drop out is a whole different question. While voters overwhelmingly disapprove of Akin’s foray into reproductive science, pollster Tom Jensen explains, ‘for many voters their dislike of McCaskill trumps their concerns about Akin’.”

Liberty Law School and Others Hit With RICO Lawsuit Over Lisa Miller Kidnapping

Liberty Law School and Others Hit With RICO Lawsuit Over Lisa Miller Kidnapping

Yesterday Kenneth Miller was convicted of aiding an international parental kidnapping for the role he played in helping Lisa Miller (no relation) flee the country with her daughter rather than abide by a court order transferring custody to her former partner, Janet Jenkins.

But that was not the only interesting development in the case, as Jenkins has now filed a civil RICO lawsuit [PDF] against Kenneth Miller and several others who allegedly played a role in helping Lisa Miller kidnap her daughter and leave the country, including Liberty University Law School and Thomas Road Baptist Church:

41. Unbeknownst to Plaintiff Janet Jenkins, in 2009 Victoria Zodhiates (now Hyden) was an employee of Response Unlimited, Inc., and also a "student worker" at Liberty University School of Law. On information and belief, Victoria Zodhiates sent an email during this time period to her co-workers at the law school requesting donations for supplies to send to Lisa Miller to enable her to remain outside the country. Lisa Miller's attorney, Matthew Staver was the Dean of the Law School and Ms. Zodhiates's boss. Matthew Staver and Philip Zodhiates were also personal
acquaintances at this time. On September 20, 2009, both Philip Zodhiates and Victoria Hyden called Lisa Miller's father, Terry Miller in Tennessee to assist in arranging her and Isabella's transportation from a Walmart parking lot in Lynchburg, Virginia, to Waynesboro, Virginia, from whence they would depart for Canada and Nicaragua the next day.

42. In early November, 2009, elders of the Thomas Road Baptist Church packed up the personal belongings of Lisa Miller in two bags. These bags were picked up from Lynchburg, Virginia by Philip Zodhiates who arranged to have the bags transported to Nicaragua by sending them with his son's school teacher who was taking some children on a mission trip to Managua. Philip Zodhiates arranged for the teacher, John Collmus, to deliver the bags at the airport to Timothy Miller. The bags also contained some supplies for Lisa Miller, such as peanut butter.

Bulletin: Alleged Sikh Temple Shooter Former Member of Skinhead Band

Bulletin: Alleged Sikh Temple Shooter Former Member of Skinhead Band

The man who allegedly murdered six people at a Sikh temple in suburban Milwaukee yesterday, identified in media reports as Wade Michael Page, was a frustrated neo-Nazi who had been the leader of a racist white-power band.

In 2010, Page, then the leader of the band End Apathy, gave an interview to the white supremacist website Label 56. He said that when he started the band in 2005, its name reflected his wish to “figure out how to end people’s apathetic ways” and start “moving forward.” “I was willing to point out some of my faults on how I was holding myself back,” Page said. Later, he added, “The inspiration was based on frustration that we have the potential to accomplish so much more as individuals and a society in whole.” He did not discuss violence in the interview.

Page told the website that he had been a part of the white power music scene since 2000, when he left his native Colorado on a motorcycle. He attended white power concerts in Georgia, North Carolina, West Virginia and Colorado. At various times, he said, he also played in the hate rock bands Youngland (2001-2003), Celtic Warrior, Radikahl, Max Resist, Intimidation One, Aggressive Force and Blue Eyed Devils. End Apathy, he said, included “Brent” on bass and “Ozzie” on drums; the men were former members of Definite Hate and another band, 13 Knots.

In 2000, the Southern Poverty Law Center has found that Page also attempted to purchase goods from the neo-Nazi National Alliance, then America’s most important hate group.

Better Off without 'Em: A Northern Manifesto for Southern Secession

Better Off without 'Em: A Northern Manifesto for Southern Secession

...
Publisher Comments:
Lets talk about secession.

Not exactly the most suitable cocktail party conversation starter anywhere in the country, but take that notion deep into the heart of Dixie and you might find yourself running from the possum-hunting conservatives, trailer-park lifers, and prayer warriors Chuck Thompson encountered during the two years he spent traveling the American South asking the question: Would we be better off without em?

The result is a heavily researched, serious inquiry into national divides which is unabashedly controversial, often uproarious, and always thought-provoking. From a church service in Mobile, Alabama, where the gospel entertainer announces "Islam is upon us!" to a store selling Ku Klux Klan memorabilia on a quaint little street in South Carolina — Thompson lifts the green velvet drapes on a South that would seem to belong more to the time of Rhett and Scarlett than the dawn of the twenty-first century.

By crunching numbers, interviewing experts, and roaming the not-so-former Confederacy, Thompson — an openly disgruntled liberal from the Northwest — makes a compelling case for southern secession. What would the new nations look like if Virginia governor Bob McDonnell was elected as the first President of the Confederate States of America? If a southern electorate was left to fend for itself while the North did damage control on an auto industry decimated by cut-rate, union-defying southern voters for the last hundred years? If the BCS championship football game were replaced by a North vs. South Coca Cola/ Starbucks Blood Bowl™? If Florida went to the South and Texas to the North in the most complex land-and-population grab in American history?

Better Off without Em is a deliberately provocative book whose insight, humor, fierce and fearless politics, and sheer nerve will spark a national debate that is perhaps long overdue.

John Fugelsang Gets a Current TV Show

John Fugelsang Gets a Current TV Show

FishbowlLA was lucky enough to be at the Pantages this past weekend for the LA stop of Stephanie Miller’s “Sexy Liberal Comedy Tour.” Although she and radio compadre Hal Sparks were both excellent, the guy who really stole the show was another one of her radio-TV regulars, John Fugelsang.

Right on cue, Fugelsang announced this morning on Miller’s program broadcast live from the TCA that he is getting his own Current TV series in the fall, joining Miller, whose three-hour daily syndicated radio offering is now being broadcast. For the handsome young comedian and new father, this is a natural progression at the network, where he has appeared as a commentator and guest hosted for network personalities such as Eliot Spitzer and Jennifer Granholm.

From this morning’s accompanying release:

“We at Current are eager to bring John’s unique perspective on politics and the world around him to primetime,” commented Current TV chairman Al Gore. “He’s been a part of the Current family for a while now and we see just how much his voice resonates with our audience. His new show will nicely complement our growing lineup.”

“I view Jesus much the way I view Elvis,” Fugelsang says. “I love the guy, but some of the fan clubs terrify me. My new show on Current will be an attack ad on apathy; taking the flag back from phony patriots, taking the Bible back from the hypocrites, and taking Bath Salts away from Glenn Beck.”
