Daily Kos GOP strategist: 'We built this moment. And then we looked the other way'

Thanx to Reagan's killing of the fairness doctrine we got Fox News and other wing nut propaganda outlets
which bathed America in misinformation for the past 2.5 generations and so now even science is suspect.

********************************************************

GOP strategist: 'We built this moment. And then we looked the other way'/In retrospect, electing the dumbest motherfucker on the planet was probably a bad idea.

Long before Trump, the Republican Party adopted as a key article of faith that more government was bad. We worked overtime to squeeze it and shrink it, to drown it in the bathtub, as anti-tax activist Grover Norquist liked to say. But somewhere along the way, it became, “all government is bad.” Now we are in a crisis that can be solved only by massive government intervention. That’s awkward.

Next, somehow, the party of idealistic Teddy Roosevelt, pragmatic Bob Dole and heroic John McCain became anti-intellectual, by which I mean, almost reflexively opposed to knowledge and expertise. We began to distrust the experts and put faith in, well, quackery. It was 2013 when former Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal said the Republican Party “must stop being the stupid party.” By 2016, the party had embraced as its nominee a reality-TV host who later suggested that perhaps the noise from windmills causes cancer.

The failures of the government’s response to the coronavirus crisis can be traced directly to some of the toxic fantasies now dear to the Republican Party. Here are a few: Government is bad. Establishment experts are overrated or just plain wrong. Science is suspect. And we can go it alone, the world be damned.

snip

Republicans are learning a hard lesson now: Experts are good. Jesus will not swoop down and save us. In fact, science is our savior. The government is there for a reason. In retrospect, electing the dumbest motherfucker on the planet was probably a bad idea.

Trump is the wrong person, in the wrong place, and at the wrong time

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/03/17/trump-praised-west-virginia-keeping-coronavirus-out-thats-not-how-this-works/

“We have all of this equipment in stock and we’re looking at different sites and a few different locations,” Trump said.
“And we’re not going to need them in West Virginia, where so far, I guess they have none.”

All 50 states and the District of Columbia have confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus, after West Virginia announced its first patient Tuesday. At least 100 people infected with the virus have died in the United States, a toll that experts expect to rise quickly.

Daily Kos: Intelligence hearing designed to show that Russia hadn't helped Trump ... showed something

Moscow Mitch

In February, Shelby Pierson, an intelligence specialist assigned to investigate threats to the U.S. election system, warned Congress that Russia wanted to see Donald Trump reelected and was planning to interfere in the 2020 election because Russian President Vladimir Putin finds that Trump is “more favorable to the Kremlin’s interests.” Republicans hurried to warn Trump about the briefing. He was so upset that he called acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire into the White House for a screaming session, and then replaced him with the worst possible person in the form of professional internet troll Richard Grenell.

That chair-shuffling appears to have generated just the response that Trump wanted. On Tuesday a senior intelligence officer appeared on Capitol Hill to explain, in a careful back-and-forth with Republican leaders, that Russia has done nothing to help Donald Trump. But notably absent from the hearing of intelligence leaders was Trump’s new acting DNI.

The entire hearing—held in the Trump-friendly confines of the Senate, with Republican leader Mitch McConnell helming the affair—was designed from the outset as a counter to the earlier briefing that Pierson gave to the House Intelligence Committee. As The Washington Post reports, the director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center, William Evanina, “tempered” the early statements from Pierson. He did so in an exchange with McConnell that was so clearly designed to generate a nothing-to-see-here response that a second official present said, “Both question and response were clearly pre-drafted.”

The call-and-response between McConnell and Evanina generated just the statement that Republicans wanted to carry out of the hearing: Russia has done nothing to help Trump. And all of them seemed prepared to ignore the other half of the message that came from the same hearing: Trump has done nothing to keep Russia out.

DeWine is doing the right thing. End of story.

And I have worked and fought for clean elections, democrats, and progressive policies in Ohio for years.

Mike is listening to real experts as per C-19 and keeping crowds down in polling places is the right thing to do.

The Dire Wolf is here and it is real.

God Damn him.

In 2018 Trump/Bolton fired the global pandemic response team (national security council) and I don't know who did it
but the funding for work on a corona-virus vaccine (SARs) was also cut too. We have him on tape (2/20) as saying that
it was a good business decision to fire those people.

In Feb. 2020 the University of Washington and the Seattle Dept. of Health found a C-19 case in Seattle and
notified the C.D.C. (Trump Administration) about the case and were told to stop testing for C-19.

And today with a virus that could kill and make sick millions of Americans so now he is worried about the
markets and so he cut the Fed's interest rate on loaning money to the banks to zero in order to help the markets.

Flattening the Curve question for Stats/Math Nerds

In the "flattening of the curve" aren't we going to get the same amount of cases over the
long run but just not a spike in the # of cases in a shorter period of time?
