"Moscow in the Meddle" The Daily Show

https://m.

Something else that stood out for me is how relaxed and happy Trump looks in the pictures from his Oval Office meeting with the Russians. That's a strong contrast to his demeanor when he has met with other world leaders, particularly with traditional allies like Merkel.

More chaotic governance from Trump admin - possible electronic ban on flights from EU to US

There are now multiple reports that such a ban is imminent. Delta even put up a sign stating it was in effect as of May 12th. A photo of the sign was posted on Flyertalk forums, leading to a large thread there and to discussion elsewhere on the Internet. Delta has now said the sign was in error.

Meanwhile, meetings have been taking place in U.S. and one has been set with EU to discuss this and EU is noting the danger of multiple devices, many of which would likely not be turned off appropriately, in cargo hold.

U.S. likely to expand airline laptop ban to Europe: government officials

Update: Delta has issued the following statement regarding the sign: “This sign was posted in CVG in error. It does not reflect any new news or guidance from DHS. Should be considered erroneous.” Hmmmm….

We’ve been hearing rumors that an electronics ban will be announced for flights from Europe to the US at some point this week. To my surprise this still hasn’t happened, and actually the Department of Homeland Security has been claiming that nothing has been decided for sure.

#SecretaryKelly continues 2 engage w/stakeholders about threats to aviation – this week w/ Congress, US airline reps and European officials.

Many reputable sources have suggested otherwise, and that a decision has in fact been made but just hasn’t been communicated publicly yet. Interestingly FlyerTalk member SFO 1K posted a picture of a sign made by Delta at Cincinnati Airport, which suggests that an electronics ban is in place effective immediately for international flights from Europe to the United States.

U.S. and European officials will discuss airline security issues at a meeting in Brussels next week, including possibly expanding the number of airports that ban passengers from carrying electronic devices bigger than cellphones aboard flights, a European Commission spokeswoman said on Friday.
~~~
European regulators have warned that placing hundreds of devices in the hold on long-haul flights could also compromise safety by increasing the risk of fire from poorly deactivated lithium-ion batteries.
Kelly briefed members of Congress Thursday and held a meeting with high-level executives of Delta Air Lines (DAL.N), United Airlines (UAL.N), American Airlines Group Inc (AAL.O) and Airlines For America, a trade group. A congressional official said Homeland Security was likely to expand the ban soon, but did not say when or to what airports.
The airlines declined to comment, but an airline official said government officials suggested an expansion of the ban was expected soon but it wasn't certain when.
"Democrat calls for emergency hearings in Congress"
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/live/2017/may/09/james-comey-fired-fbi-trump-white-house-live
Congressman Elijah Cummings, ranking member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, has called for “immediate emergency hearings” on Comey’s termination:
Congress needs to have immediate emergency hearings to obtain testimony directly from Attorney General Sessions, the deputy attorney general, and FBI Director Comey. The White House was already covering up for Michael Flynn by refusing to provide a single document to Congress, and now the President fired the one independent person who was doing the most to investigate President Trump and his campaign over allegations of coordination with Russia. It is mindboggling that the Attorney General – who claimed to have recused himself – was directly involved in the decision to fire Director Comey according to the White House itself. There is now a crisis of confidence at the Justice Department, and President Trump is not being held accountable because House Republicans refuse to work with us to do our job. Congress must restore credibility, accountability, and transparency to this investigation and finally pass legislation to create a truly independent commission.”
John Oliver urges activism on net neutrality - gofccyourself
https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2017/may/08/john-oliver-last-week-tonight-net-neutrality
John Oliver has sent out a warning over the Trump administration’s attack on net neutrality, detailing the problems that it could bring.
On his HBO show, Last Week Tonight, the comic spoke about the president’s desire to roll back Barack Obama’s attempts to prevent companies from exerting control over people’s access to certain sites.
“It seems that the Trump era will basically control-Z everything that happened on Obama’s watch,” he said, referring to the “undo” keyboard command. “I genuinely would not be surprised if one night Trump went on TV to say that he personally killed every turkey Obama ever pardoned.”
Oliver explained net neutrality, described the hazards of allowing new FCC head Ajit Pai to 'weed whack' it and showed how difficult they've made it for people to comment about changes, then unveiled a shortcut his show has created to make it easier for people to post comments in support of net neutrality - gofccyourself.com
Le Pen refuses credentials for left leaning Indy media. Mainstream media responds by
boycotting FN event.
Great demonstration of solidarity by the media there.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2017/may/07/french-presidential-election-emmanuel-macron-marine-le-pen
As many polling stations closed (some, particularly in the big cities, will remain open for another hour), France’s newspaper of record, Le Monde, has announced that it too will boycott the Front National’s election evening event in the Bois de Vincennes (see post at 17.19)pm:
The Front National has chosen to exclude some French and international media from its election evening event on 7 May ... Le Monde forcefully condemns this attitude which does not allow proper coverage of a major democratic moment and shows a poor interpretation of press freedom. In solidarity with the media concerned, we have decided we will not be present at this election evening event. This decision will not prevent us from covering the Front National to the same journalistic standards.
~~~

A list of online and mainly left-leaning media organisations and websites say they have not been accredited for the Front National’s election evening event in the Bois de Vincennes on the eastern edge of Paris.

Organisations including BuzzFeed, Politico, Rue89, Mediapart and Les Jours all said they have been refused admittance. The leftwing daily newspaper Libération has said it will boycott the event in solidarity.

Judge Blocks Order Cutting Off Funding To Sanctuary Cities

Source: CBS

SAN FRANCISCO (CBSNewYork/AP) — A federal judge in San Francisco has blocked an order by the Trump administration that would cut off funding to cities that limit cooperation with immigration authorities.

U.S. District Judge William Orrick issued the temporary ruling Tuesday in a lawsuit over the executive order targeting so-called sanctuary cities. The decision will stay in place while the lawsuit moves through court.

Glad to see this. Doubly glad that this is from San Francisco since the appeal would go to the Ninth Circuit.

" 'Terrorist' baby faces US embassy interview after error on visa form"

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/apr/16/baby-us-embassy-interview-visa-esta-terrorist

On the part of the Esta form which reads “Do you seek to engage in or have you ever engaged in terrorist activities, espionage, sabotage, or genocide?” Kenyon ticked yes instead of no.

He only learned of his error when his grandson’s travel was refused. “I couldn’t believe that they couldn’t see it was a genuine mistake and that a three-month-old baby would be no harm to anyone,” said the 62-year-old.

~~~
“Baby Harvey was good as gold for the interview and never cried once. I thought about taking him along in an orange jumpsuit, but thought better of it,” said Kenyon. “They didn’t appear to have a sense of humour over it at all and couldn’t see the funny side.
“He’s obviously never engaged in genocide, or espionage, but he has sabotaged quite a few nappies in his time, though I didn’t tell them that at the US embassy.”
Because of course an actual terrorist would tick the yes box to that question.
