Judge who threw occupiers out of WI Capitol building in 2011 has just thrown out citations against singers

The same judge that delivered a ruling which effectively ended the 2011 occupation of the Wisconsin Capitol has thrown out citations against 10 people arrested for protesting in that same building.

Judge Albert read both the first amendment to the U.S. Constitution and a corollary section of the Wisconsin constitution to his Dane County courtroom on Friday before he said,

“In March of 2011 I was the judge, who by some media reports – actually from this seat in this court room – “threw the protesters out of the Wisconsin Capitol”. Following that decision, people actually applauded me for doing that.

So today I am throwing out this administration’s attempt via this illegal administrative rule, to silence those that disagree with it. Let me be clear: a permitting system for controlling conflicting access to the Wisconsin Capitol can be devised that meets the requirements of the first amendment and the Wisconsin constitution. But the rule that brings us here today fails to meet long-established standards concerning first amendment principles.

And let me also indicate that one week from today will be D-Day and we are a free society because of what happened on D-Day. And you probably all know that that was the day that Allied forces invaded France to free it from the tyranny of Nazi Germany.”

Feds: Arch Coal Workers Took $2M in Kickbacks

Source: New York Times (AP)

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Arch Coal employees at a West Virginia mine are charged with pocketing almost $2 million from vendors in a pay-to-play kickback scheme, federal prosecutors said Friday.

U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin said the widespread setup required vendors to pay kickbacks to Arch Coal employees to do business with the coal company.

Four employees at Arch Coal's Mountain Laurel mining complex in Logan County are accused of taking kickbacks from 2007 to 2012. Prosecutors said the mine's former general manager, David E. Runyon, was at the center of the setup.

Prosecutors said some companies spent more than $400,000 to maintain lucrative contracts with Arch Coal, one of the biggest coal producers and marketers worldwide.

Ten people in all have been charged, with vendors, contractors and four Arch employees among them. The employees are no longer with the company.

Eric O’Keefe now suing Wisconsin’s Government Accountability Board (blue cheddar)

http://www.bluecheddar.net/?p=40254#more-

Eric O’Keefe of Wisconsin Club for Growth is, as of this morning, suing G.A.B.

The conservative mouthpiece WatchDog.org has reported that Eric O’Keefe filed a lawsuit this morning against Wisconsin’s Government Accountability Board for having “exceeded its statutory authority and evaded its statutory obligations by pursuing and funding a far-reaching criminal investigation into virtually every conservative-leaning group in Wisconsin”. The suit is filed in Waukesha County Circuit Court.

From WatchDog.org:
“The GAB’s use of a John Doe has created a Frankenstein monster,” the complaint states. “The GAB has grafted its existing powers for civil enforcement of campaign finance laws onto law enforcement powers borrowed from John Doe statute, and from this hybrid bundle of investigative powers, has lopped off vital procedural protections.”

He also wants this:
“O’Keefe and the club seek a judgment declaring the GAB has made and continues to make “illegal expenditures associated with its participation in the secret John Doe proceeding, and enjoining GAB from making any additional unlawful expenditures of public funds.”

So basically, a man who has access to unlimited funds is trying to eliminate funding for the agency in Wisconsin government that investigates crooks like him.

John Doe targets sue Wisconsin election officials in Waukesha County

Source: WISCONSIN STATE JOURNAL

Targets of a John Doe investigation into alleged illegal campaign activity filed a lawsuit Friday against state election officials, arguing that they abused their power and infringed on the rights of political activists.

The conservative group Wisconsin Club for Growth and its board member and treasurer Eric O’Keefe sued the state Government Accountability Board in Waukesha County. The lawsuit also names Kevin Kennedy, the GAB's executive director and general counsel.

In the lawsuit, the group said the GAB had "exceeded its statutory authority and evaded its statutory obligations by pursuing and funding a far-reaching criminal investigation into virtually every conservative-leaning group in Wisonsin."

The lawsuit is just the latest legal battle over the John Doe probe, which is ensnared in multiple state lawsuits as well as another in federal court.

The federal case brought the investigation to a halt earlier this month when U.S. District Judge Rudolph Randa sided with O’Keefe and Wisconsin Club for Growth and issued a preliminary injunction ordering prosecutors to stop the probe, saying it violated their free speech rights.

Why It’s So Hard for Men to See Misogyny

http://www.slate.com/articles/double_x/doublex/2014//_yesallwomen_in_the_wake_of_elliot_rodger_why_it_s_so_hard_for_men_to_recognize.html

Men were surprised by #YesAllWomen because men don’t see what women experience.
When Santa Barbara police arrived at Elliot Rodger’s apartment last month—after Rodger’s mother alerted authorities to her son’s YouTube videos, where he expressed his resentment of women who don’t have sex with him, aired his jealousy of the men they do choose, and stated his intentions to remedy this “injustice” through a display of his own “magnificence and power”—they left with the impression that he was a “perfectly polite, kind and wonderful human.” Then Rodger killed six people and himself on Friday night, leaving a manifesto that spelled out his virulent hatred for women in more explicit terms, and Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown deemed him a “madman.”

Another rude awakening played out on social media this weekend as news of Rodger’s attack spread around the world. When women took to Twitter to share their own everyday experiences with men who had reduced them to sexual conquests and threatened them with violence for failing to comply—filing their anecdotes under the hashtag #YesAllWomen—some men joined in to express surprise at these revelations, which amassed more quickly than observers could digest. How can some men manage to appear polite, kind, even “wonderful” in public while perpetuating sexism under the radar of other men’s notice? And how could this dynamic be so obvious to so many women, yet completely foreign to the men in their lives? Some #YesAllWomen contributors suggested that men simply aren’t paying attention to misogyny. Others claimed that they deliberately ignore it. There could also be a performative aspect to this public outpouring of male shock—a man who expresses his own lack of awareness of sexism implicitly absolves himself of his own contributions to it.

But there are other, more insidious hurdles that prevent male bystanders from helping to fight violence against women. Among men, misogyny hides in plain sight, and not just because most men are oblivious to the problem or callous toward its impact. Men who objectify and threaten women often strategically obscure their actions from other men, taking care to harass women when other men aren’t around.

Two Indian sisters 'gang-raped', killed and hanged from a tree

Source: theguardian

Three men arrested, including two police officers, after teenagers' bodies are discovered in Uttar Pradesh.

Authorities in northern India have arrested three men, including two police officers, suspected of gang-raping and killing two teenage sisters before hanging their bodies from a mango tree.

The deaths have sparked renewed public outrage over sexual violence in the country.

Villagers found the girls' bodies on Wednesday morning, hours after they disappeared from fields near their home in Katra village in Uttar Pradesh state, police superintendent Atul Saxena said. The girls, who were 14 and 15, had gone into the fields because there was no toilet in their home.

Hundreds of villagers spent the rest of the day in silent protest over alleged police inaction in the case. Indian TV channels showed video of the villagers sitting under the girls' bodies as they swung in the wind, preventing authorities from taking them down until the suspects were arrested.

Police arrested the three men later in the day and were searching for four more suspects.

Autopsies confirmed the girls had been gang-raped and strangled before being hanged, Saxena said.

More Shocking Revelations on Judge Who Halted Wisconsin John Doe Probe

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/05/27/1302368/-More-Shocking-Revelations-on-Judge-Who-Halted-Wisconsin-John-Doe-Probe

After chasing down a story on the Koch Brothers Americans for Prosperity and posting a diary, I checked my KosMail. Ericlewis0 sent me a link to a shocking new revelation about Judge Randa, the federal judge who recently shut down the John Doe Probe about illegal coordination between campaigns and dark money astroturf groups like AFP and Club for Growth.

We've already discovered that Randas wife is a frequent donor to Walkers campaigns (less than $100 each time). We also know that Randas Judicial Assistant is the wife of Scott Walkers lawyer, Steven Biskupic. We also know that Randa is a member of the RW Federalist Society.

Today, however, we know that Randa has been attending junkets paid for by RW billionaire funded groups.

The federal judge who ordered a halt to Wisconsin's "John Doe" criminal investigation into spending during the 2011 and 2012 recall elections has regularly attended all-expenses paid "judicial junkets" funded by the Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation, the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation, and other ideological and corporate interests.

Hmmmm. Koch-funded Club for Growth was one of the organizations bringing the case to court. One would think that Randa should have recused himself from even hearing a case brought by a group from which he has received so much. Apparently he chose not to which casts a poor light on his ruling that favors the dark money organizations that fund his frequent junkets.

Pakistan woman stoned to death by family for marrying man she loved

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - A 25-year-old woman was stoned to death by her family outside one of Pakistan's top courts on Tuesday in a so-called "honor" killing for marrying the man she loved, police said.

Farzana Iqbal was waiting for the High Court in the eastern city of Lahore to open when a group of around dozen men began attacking her with bricks, said Umer Cheema, a senior police officer.

Her father, two brothers and former fiance were among the attackers, he said. Iqbal suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead in hospital, police said.

All the suspects except her father escaped. He admitted killing his daughter, Cheema said, and explained it was a matter of honor. Many Pakistani families think a woman marrying her own choice of man brings dishonor on the family...
...Around 1,000 Pakistani women are killed every year by their families in honor killings, according to Pakistani rights group the Aurat Foundation.
