Virus cases rise by 731, governor says; increase a record for state

Arkansas saw a record number of new covid-19 cases Friday, including a record number of new cases among the state’s nonincarcerated population, Gov. Asa Hutchinson said.

The total of new cases, 731, includes 207 from correctional facilities. The other 524 are from nursing homes and the general population, including 199 cases from Tyson’s facility in Springdale, Hutchinson said.

The counties with the most cases were Washington County, with 220, Benton County with 91, Madison County and Lee County, each with 32, Pulaski County with 25 and Sebastian County with 24. The total number of active cases is 3,764.

Hospitalizations reached a new peak, 203, and five more people died of the virus, bringing the toll to 176.

We're still moving on to phase 2 of reopening on Monday. I don't understand the reasoning behind that move.

George Takei for the win.

George Takei

Overheard: Oh, so you say “All lives matter.” Then you should wear your damn mask in the store.

I don't know if this is a true quote, but I love the sentiment.

Nancy Pelosi was asked if she’s embarrassed the KKK were once members of the Democratic Party. “Of course. We’re embarrassed Donald Trump was a Democrat for similar reasons”.

About that speech on racism.

George Takei

Having Stephen Miller write the White House speech on race relations is like having Jeffrey Dahmer select the menu items.

Here's a great question. "If you think your vote doesn't matter,

why do you think they're trying so hard to suppress it?"

Hot Springs city manager supports move of Confederate statute from lynching site

The Sentinel-Record reports that Hot Springs City Manager Bill Burrough supports the relocation of a Confederate statue in a prominent spot downtown. A petition drive is underway, powered by recent efforts nationwide to relocate Confederate monuments on public property.

A problem in Hot Springs: It sits on land at Central, Ouachita, Market, and Olive streets owned by a Confederacy-venerating group. Defenders have rallied before to protect its place in one of the state’s premier tourist attractions. The United Daughters of the Confederacy earlier agreed to stop flying Confederate flags on the plaza.

We’ve written before about the dark history of the spot, where two lynchings occurred, the last in 1934.

A deal was struck with a Confederate group in Bentonville to move a statue from the town square to a private park. In Little Rock, there have been periodic calls (widely ignored) for removal of two Confederate monuments on the state Capitol grounds. As yet, no protest has emerged over the Confederate statue in the city-owned MacArthur Park in Little Rock.

Our View: To President Trump: You should resign now

President Trump: We’re sorry that you decided to come to Maine, but since you are here, could you do us a favor? Resign.

You have never been a good president, but today your shortcomings are unleashing historic levels of suffering on the American people.

Your slow response to the coronavirus pandemic has spun a manageable crisis into the worst public health emergency since 1918.

We are also in the middle of the worst economic collapse since the Great Depression. There is no national strategy to recover from the shock that is disproportionately affecting people who were already struggling to make it.
