NY Coronavirus: 3/4 Workforce Stay Home; Mortgage Payments Waived

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says 75 percent of the workforce must stay home and mortgage payments will be waived for 90 days.

NEW YORK, NY — Three-fourths of non-essential New York employees will be told to work from home, and Gov. Andrew Cuomo said mortgage payments will be waived for 90 days for those with financial hardships as the state ramps up measures to mitigate the health and economic impacts of the new coronavirus. Cuomo announced the latest in a series of drastic measures Thursday, adding that overdraft fees on ATMs and credit cards will also be waived.

Essential services include industries such as shipping, media, warehousing, grocery and food production, pharmacies, health care providers, utilities, banks and related financial institutions, as well as other industries critical to the supply chain.

Coronavirus: NY To Close All Restaurants, Bars, Movie Theaters

BREAKING: All casinos, movie theaters, restaurants and bars will close Monday night. Restaurants will shift to takeout and delivery.

NEW YORK, NY — All restaurants and bars in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut will close Monday night, as will all casinos, gyms, and racetracks, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Monday. The industries will remain closed indefinitely and the governors of the three states will coordinate a reopening date. The measure is a desperate attempt to flatten the coronavirus infection curve and comes after the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended banning all gatherings over 50 people.

"We have agreed to a common set of rules that will pertain to all of our states so don't even think about going to a neighboring state," he said.

Cuomo said he believes the Northeast is the only region that has coordinated closures in the country, and said the federal government should have set up a uniform set of rules.

"We all agree there will be no crowds of gatherings over 50 people," Cuomo said.

All casinos, movie theaters, restaurants and bars will close at 8 p.m. Monday, he said. Restaurants will shift to takeout and delivery services. These establishments will be provided a waiver for carry-out alcohol. Supermarkets, pharmacies and gas stations will not be affected.

"Our primary goal right now is to slow the spread of this virus so that the wave of new infections doesn't crash our healthcare system, and everyone agrees social distancing is the best way to do that," Cuomo said. "This is not a war that can be won alone, which is why New York is partnering with our neighboring states to implement a uniform standard that not only keeps our people safe but also prevents 'state shopping' where residents of one state travel to another and vice versa.

1,000 Into Quarantine In Westchester, Bronx: Cuomo

WHITE PLAINS, NY — About 1,000 people are expected to go into quarantine in Westchester County and the Bronx after a family and neighbor in New Rochelle tested positive for coronavirus, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a news conference Wednesday afternoon. The number of confirmed cases of the new coronavirus increased to six in New York.

"They will be contacted; between county, state and private organizations they'll be given information on what that means," he said.

The affected people include congregants and attendees at recent events at Young Israel of New Rochelle, eight staffers at New York Presbyterian-Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville, students and staff at the SAR Academy in Riverdale, some people at Yeshiva University and members of a hospitalized man's Midtown Manhattan law firm.

They're all on the list of people who may have come in contact with a New Rochelle family with coronavirus: the father, who is hospitalized, his wife, 14-year-old daughter and 20-year-old son; and the neighbor who drove the 50-year-old man to Lawrence Hospital. The neighbor's children are also being tested, Cuomo said.

NY Coronavirus: Bringing Back 300 CUNY, SUNY Students Abroad

ALBANY, NY — Students at SUNY and CUNY schools who are studying abroad in China, Iran, Italy, Japan or South Korea, where coronavirus outbreaks are most widespread, will be brought back to New York. They'll be quarantined for 14 days, state officials said Wednesday morning.

The students will be flown on a charter plane into Stewart Airport in Orange County, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said at a news briefing in Albany.

About 300 students will be brought back. They'll be quarantined in dormitories where there is excess capacity, state officials said. Those dorms identified so far are on Long Island, in Western New York and in the Utica-Rome area.

Cuomo made the announcement before heading to Westchester County to meet with local officials about the outbreak there. The wife and two children of the New Rochelle attorney in serious condition with coronavirus, plus the neighbor who drove him to the hospital, have all tested positive, the governor said. Marist College is suspending classes at its Italy campus.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — As the new coronavirus continues to make headlines around the world, Marist College, which is based in Poughkeepsie, announced it is suspending all classes and activities on its campus in Florence, Italy. A communication issued by the college said that all Marist students in Italy "are strongly advised to make immediate plans to leave and return home with all of their academic materials."

Marist made the decision after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention increased its Italy advisory level to Level 3 Friday. The health agency said that level recommends avoiding nonessential travel.

Marist said its policy related to COVID-19, as the virus is formally known, is guided by the CDC and the World Health Organization.

Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night. Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieve it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night. Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. ~~~~~~~~~ For, it ends in the blink of an eye. Carpe Diem (Seize the day)!
