There is a tropical storm developing off the Carolinas!

Kinda early, isn't it???

Hello, Alberto!

As much as I bash Obama, he is the only thing standing between us...

...and the abyss of RW insanity. I may bitch about him sucking up to the Banksters at times, but the alternative is much, much worse. This is not an election between Left and Right, it is an election between sanity and insanity.

350-pound man calls police after all-you-can-eat restaurant cuts him off

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/05/16/350-pound-man-calls-police-after-all-you-can-eat-restaurant-cuts-him-off/

An unusually large man in Wisconsin called the police recently after an all-you-can-eat buffet restaurant decided he’d had enough fried fish and cut him off at 20 pieces.

Standing 6-foot-6 and weighing 350 pounds, Bill Wisth certainly looks like trouble for any buffet restaurant. Chuck’s Place in Thiensville, Wisconsin recently learned this the hard way, according to Wisconsin news station Today’s TMJ4.

After watching Wisth devour 12 individual pieces of fried fish on Friday, May 11, the management decided that was quite enough. They intervened, explaining the restaurant were running out of fish and simply could not allow him to stay any longer.

Giving him eight more pieces as a courtesy, for a total of 20, the restaurant’s management sent Wisth on his way in hopes that the costly episode was behind them. That hope, however, was severely misplaced.

Jesus, I weigh 300lbs and I can't eat even close to that much! And this guy is a perfect example of "unhealthy fat", I am only 5' 9" and yet a look much thinner than he does!

I think my Paxil makes me ticked off at pessimists, LOL

It's quite strange, I have noticed that ever since I started on Paxil since 2006 I've found that pessimistic people get on my nerves. Even here on DU, when a poster does the "WE'RE DOOMED" routine I get annoyed. That's not to say I'm some Dr. Pangloss who refuses to see anything bad in the world, I just get annoyed at the "everything is going down the toilet and it can't be fixed" type of thinking.

Rapists rape because they like raping (The Dominique Strauss Kahn example)

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/05/04/rapists-rape-because-they-like-raping-the-dominique-strauss-kahn-example

If you have been keeping track, today marks the third time in just over a year that former International Monetary Fund president Dominique Strauss-Kahn has been legally accused of rape — which does not include claims in a French book that he previous raped a maid in a Mexican hotel and 14 other women.

Strauss-Kahn, who says in his defense that the prudish press simply objects to what he terms to his “libertine” lifestyle and that the rape charges in New York were part of a vast political conspiracy, already denies raping Nafissatou Diallo and Tristane Banon and, presumably, the other 16 women who have accused him of rape.

So at what point does he stop deserving the benefit of the doubt so many were willing to accord him in the wake of Diallo’s allegations?

Statistics show that rapists are most likely white (52 percent of those reported to law enforcement in this country are); that two-thirds of rapists know their victims; that almost one-quarter are married; and that 84 percent used only physical force on their victims. Other statistics show that 72 percent of rapes go unreported; when rapes are reported, only about half of the perpetrators are ever arrested; 20 percent of those arrested never face prosecution; 40 percent of those prosecuted walk away without a felony conviction; and 30 percent of those convicted of a felony avoid jail time. In other words, 19 out of every 20 rapists walks the streets today virtually untouched by legal consequences.

Sadly, there are many here who defend DSK by using the "American Prudishness" excuse mentioned in this opinion piece.

IMO powerful men that brag about their sexual exploits should be assumed to be rapists.

Say theology is stupid, get called a bigot.

Anyone reading "Why Marx Was Right" by Terry Eagleton?

I'm about halfway through and it's blowing me away. Eagleton is really witty, too!

He does a good job at debunking the usual criticisms of Marxism, that it is dehumanizing and deterministic, that it assumes that the material conditions of society are the only thing that matters, that it is a utopian pipe dream, etc. Eagleton goes very in depth about a society needing to be extremely productive, wealthy, and having the potential to be "post-scarcity" for necessities before a social revolution can be successful, otherwise it leads to Stalinism. He also refutes the notion that Marx's ideas are based on a notion of there being no essential human nature, because if there were no essential human nature, Eagleton argues, that people would not get angry over unjust social relations.

Oy, the paranoia over domestic drones is getting ridiculous.

Yep, that unmanned search-and-rescue plane is really a CIA drone out to spy on you! NOT!
