If UTAH can manage this politically, the rest of the states should be able to, also.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/inspired-life/wp/2015/04/17/the-surprisingly-simple-way-utah-solved-chronic-homelessness-and-saved-millions/

The story of how Utah solved chronic homelessness begins in 2003, inside a cavernous Las Vegas banquet hall populated by droves of suits. The problem at hand was seemingly intractable. The number of chronic homeless had surged since the early 1970s. And related costs were soaring. A University of Pennsylvania study had just showed New York City was dropping a staggering $40,500 in annual costs on every homeless person with mental problems, who account for many of the chronically homeless. So that day, as officials spit-balled ideas, a social researcher named Sam Tsemberis stood to deliver what he framed as a surprisingly simple, cost-effective method of ending chronic homelessness.

Give homes to the homeless.

Tsemberis’ research, conducted here in the District and in New York City, showed this wouldn’t just dramatically cut the number of chronically homeless on the streets. It would also slash spending in the long run. In the audience sat a Utah businessman named Lloyd Pendleton. He had just taken over the Utah Housing Task Force after a successful run in business. He was intrigued. “He came over to me and he said, ‘I finally just heard something that make sense to me,'” recalled Tsemberis in an interview. “‘Would you be willing to come to Utah and work with us?'”

That conversation spawned what has been perhaps the nation’s most successful — and radical — program to end chronic homelessness. Now, more than a decade later, chronic homelessness in one of the nation’s most conservative states may soon end. And all of it is thanks to a program that at first seems stripped from the bleeding-heart manual. In 2005, Utah had nearly 1,932 chronically homeless. By 2014, that number had dropped 72 percent to 539. Today, explained Gordon Walker, the director of the state Housing and Community Development Division, the state is “approaching a functional zero.” Next week, he said, they’re set to announce what he called “exciting news” that would guarantee an “even bigger headline,” but declined to elaborate further.

How Utah accomplished this didn’t require complex theorems or statistical models. But it did require the suspension of what had been conventional wisdom. For years, the thought of simply giving the homeless homes seemed absurd, constituting the height of government waste. Many chronically homeless, after all, are victims of severe trauma and significant mental health and addiction issues. Many more have spent thousands of nights on the streets and are no longer familiar with home-living. Who, in their right mind, would willingly give such folk brand new houses without any proof of marked improvement?

Politifact rates Sanders' claim about data breach as "mostly false."

Sanders said in an interview with Chuck Todd that his campaign "didn't go out and take" Clinton data. Politifact rated this claim as "mostly false."

Politifact backed up its rating with screen shots of the database logs showing that the Sanders' staffers actions were deliberate.

For those not familiar with Politifact, I've added info about its status as a non-profit, non-partisan organization below.

http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2015/dec/22/bernie-s/Sanders-take-Clinton-voter-data/

Our ruling

Sanders said that his campaign did not go out and take information from the Clinton campaign. From all accounts, it is true that the Sanders campaign did not attempt to break into the voter data of a rival campaign. The Sanders people stumbled upon a glitch.

But rather than reporting the glitch immediately, they probed the database for a bit under two hours. At some point, the staff produced a page of information that at the very least would show the count of certain voters.

Experts familiar with the Democratic voter data base say that the Sanders campaign would have gleaned valuable information. At the end of the day, they knew some things about the Clinton campaign that they hadn’t known before, even if they didn’t seek to crack into the Clinton data.

We rate Sanders’ claim that the campaign didn’t "go out and take" information as Mostly False.

About The Poynter Institute:

http://about.poynter.org/about-us/mission-history

For 40 years, Nelson Poynter produced newspapers in St. Petersburg that reflected his belief that excellent journalism, published independently, could help a community prosper and a democracy flourish.

And he saw no good reason why his passing should change anything about that.

That’s why he founded the Modern Media Institute in 1975 and willed, upon his death in 1978, that his new school would own controlling stock of the St. Petersburg Times Company.

From the beginning, the idea flourished. Not only did the unique ownership model protect his publications from the insatiable demands of the Wall Street-owned chains, it also fulfilled Nelson Poynter’s dream of a school that would help working journalists improve their skills to the benefit of their communities. Today, the paper, now called the Tampa Bay Times, is the largest in Florida and one of America’s best; Poynter is the center for journalism excellence worldwide.

http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/blog/2011/oct/06/who-pays-for-politifact/

Back in the 1970s, the Times was owned by Nelson Poynter, whose father Paul Poynter had bought the paper in 1912. (It was then called the St. Petersburg Times; the name changed to the Tampa Bay Times in 2012.)

Nelson Poynter had a passion for journalism, especially for independent journalism. As he thought about the future of his newspaper, he knew that he wanted to keep it independent and vigorous, even after his own death. So he created a plan to leave his newspaper, not to his family, but to a nonprofit school for journalism he created for the purpose.

"I haven't met my great-grandchildren. I might not like them," Poynter said.

Poynter died in 1978, and his plan went into place. The school -- now called the Poynter Institute -- owns the newspaper. The Poynter Institute offers seminars and classes to working journalists, educators and students, and its website, Poynter.org, is a clearinghouse for information and news about journalism.

Seattle court upholds new gun violence tax

A small step but a good one. An appeal is planned, of course.

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory/judge-upholds-seattle-gun-violence-tax-dismisses-nra-35915715

A judge upheld Seattle's so-called gun violence tax Tuesday, rejecting a challenge from the National Rifle Association and other gun rights groups.

King County Superior Court Judge Palmer Robinson dismissed arguments that Seattle's tax, adopted last summer, exceeded the city's authority under state law.

The measure — one of only a couple of its kind in the nation — adds $25 to the price of each firearm sold in the city, plus 2 or 5 cents per round of ammunition, depending on the type. Officials expect it to raise up to $500,000 a year to help offset the costs of gun violence. The measure is set to take effect next month.

"The NRA and its allies always oppose these commonsense steps to shine light on the gun violence epidemic," said City Council President Tim Burgess, who sponsored the law. "Judge Robinson saw through the NRA's distorted efforts to put gun industry profits ahead of public safety."

Black Florida woman kicked out of hospital, ARRESTED for refusing to go, dies of blood clot

in her lung.

A damn blood clot in her lung and they kicked her out of the hospital?

Sometimes pulmonary embolisms occur without prior symptoms and then they can be hard to detect and treat. But this woman entered the hospital at 10:30 PM and died by 6 the next morning. They kicked her out without identifying or treating the blood clot in her lung but SHE knew she was in pain and couldn't breathe and they told her she was wrong

I have a relative who's had deep vein thrombosis, in a leg, and I know how careful the hospital was because it can go into your lungs and "instantly" kill you.

But this lady had symptoms for HOURS.

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/barbara-dawson-florida-woman-dies-after-being-removed-hospital-n485186

Barbara Dawson, 57, went to Liberty Calhoun Hospital in Blountstown, Florida, to seek treatment for breathing problems. Police were called to the emergency room when Dawson, who had been discharged by physicians, refused to leave. She was charged with disorderly conduct and trespassing and was escorted out of the hospital in handcuffs.

Dawson then collapsed as she arrived at the officer's car.

"Our officer asked for help once he realized the patient did indeed appear to be unresponsive and had medical staff respond to Ms. Dawson," Blountstown Police Chief Mark Mallory said in a statement on Wednesday.

Dawson was readmitted to the emergency room — where she was pronounced dead an hour later. The Florida state medical examiner ruled on Wednesday that she died from natural causes due to a blood clot in her lung.

Mallory told NBC News there is dashcam video from the officer's car. The video does not show the incident, he said, but it did pick up audio. He says the video will be released "in due time."

57 yr. FL black woman gets arrested because she won't leave hospital, saying she can't breathe.

In the parking lot she collapses. Police remove her handcuffs so she can get medical attention.

She dies, of course. The autopsy on Barbara Dawson is due out today.

I bet she had a heart attack. Women having heart attacks are much likely to be misdiagnosed than men, because the "classic" heart attack taught in med school is based on the male model. Women have different symptoms.

So she probably died because she was a woman, and black, and in Florida. But we'll know more later today.

http://www.tallahassee.com/story/news/2015/12/22/blountstown-woman-dies-while-being-kicked-out-area-hospital/77758316/?from=global&sessionKey=&autologin=

Blountstown Police Chief Mark Mallory said Dawson was admitted to the hospital about 10:30 p.m. Hours later, she was discharged after being treated and cleared by hospital staff.

Dawson, however, felt she needed to remain at the hospital for continued care and told the medical staff she "still was not feeling well," relatives said. The family said the nursing staff then "banned" her from the hospital.

SNIP

After Dawson refused to leave the facility, hospital staff called police about 4:45 a.m. Monday.
"She was causing a disturbance in the hospital with her language and the volume of her voice," Mallory said.

The officer was polite to Dawson, Mallory said, and told her she was free to get medical care, but she had to seek treatment elsewhere. She was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and trespassing, handcuffed and escorted out of the hospital.

Relatives reported Dawson requested hospital staff return her oxygen tank because she was having difficulty breathing. However, they said a nurse told Dawson she was breathing fine and did not need it.

Bernie's TERRIFIC response to Hillary's bathroom scandal.

If only all of his supporters could react as well as he does.

I don't know why so many here think it helps their cause to rudely disparage her. Bernie is far more effective than they are simply by being his smart and gracious self.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2015/12/22/sanders-mocks-trump-for-his-comments-about-clintons-mid-debate-trip-to-the-restroom/

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa -- Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders ratcheted up his criticism Tuesday of Republican front-runner Donald Trump, calling him a “coward billionaire” and mocking him for talking about Hillary Clinton’s trip to the restroom during the last presidential debate.

“He has discovered that women go to the bathroom, and it’s been very upsetting to him,” the Vermont senator said of the real-estate mogul during a rally here that drew about 1,800 people. “This is a guy who wants to be president of the United States. He must have a very unusual relationship with women.”

Sanders was referring to Trump’s recounting Monday of Clinton’s late return to the Democratic debate stage following a commercial break on Saturday night.

Now I’ve got to be honest with you. I’ve got to be honest with you,” Sanders said, speaking in a mocking tone. “I also went to the bathroom. I know, I have to admit it. … This is the pathology. This is the guy who is leading in the Republican polls.”

Hillary never lied about Trump and a video.

She never said they MADE a Trump video. She said they're USING Trump videos for recruiting. And of course they are. His obnoxious videos are all over youtube, viewable all over the world.

It never occurred to me when I heard her speak, that she meant they had a specially produced video used for recruiting. Any Democrat who thinks that should listen to her again.

That's NOT what she said.

http://www.ibtimes.com/does-hillary-clinton-owe-donald-trump-apology-campaign-says-hell-no-regarding-isis-2235599

"They are going to people showing videos of Donald Trump insulting Islam and Muslims in order to recruit more radical jihadists," Clinton said.

The remarks led some to criticize Clinton for what they said is a false claim. The SITE Intelligence Group and several news outlets have said there is no evidence of any such videos.

“For now, it seems that Clinton has turned speculative left-of-center rhetoric into fact,” PolitiFact wrote. “… We were unable to find any evidence to support [the claim]. The Clinton campaign did not provide any evidence that this is already happening -- only that it could be happening, or that it may in the future. If ISIS was using Trump for recruitment videos, we would expect a frenzy of media coverage over it.”

Clinton's campaign has responded, citing a remark made by the executive director of the SITE Intelligence Group. "They follow everything Donald Trump says," Rita Katz told NBC. "When he says, 'No Muslims should be allowed in America,' they tell people, 'We told you America hates Muslims, and here is proof.'"

Gallup poll: after Trump attacks Muslims, his support among Democrats INCREASES

This is frightening.

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/trump-anti-muslim-rhetoric-winning-220900448.html

A new Gallup poll shows that Trump’s image among all Americans has trended up, not down, after he touched off an international uproar with his comments Dec. 7 proposing to bar all Muslims other than U.S. citizens from entering the country.

SNIP

Among Republicans and GOP-leaning independents, support for Trump does appear to have taken a slight hit, which suggests that some within the party were troubled by his intemperate remarks. But Democrats actually appear slightly more positive about the GOP frontrunner.

Trump’s net favorability rating among Republicans and GOP-leaning independents edged down by seven percentage, according to Gallup. At the same time his net favorable rating rose by 10 points among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents.

In the poll, Gallup interviewed 1,927 people Nov. 23 through Dec. 7 and 1,250 adults Dec. 8 through 16.

Bernie has disavowed Super Pacs -- but he can't stop them from working on his behalf.

He can't control them at all, other than not allowing them to use his name in their titles.

Neither can Hillary or Martin, both of whom also oppose Super Pacs and their shady financing but can't legally stop the orgs from working on their behalf.

https://www.yahoo.com/politics/did-this-shady-pro-bernie-sanders-super-pac-just-128843826176.html

Sanders himself has disavowed super PACs, which have no contribution limits, and his campaign has demanded that Peterson curtail his operation. But there is little the U.S. senator from Vermont can actually do to stop passionate supporters — or opportunists — from launching such groups.

Super PACs are largely unregulated by the Federal Election Commission. Pretty much anyone can form one, including political professionals, college kids and even convicted criminals. And the prominence of social media means these unofficial groups may easily tap online support for a popular candidate like Sanders.

Campaign finance watchdogs say this creates a buyer-beware situation for donors, especially if the super PAC’s name is similar to that of the candidate.

Peterson, a self-described “lobbyist” and “diplomat” prone to making extravagant claims about his business operations, initially took this approach, naming Americans Socially United both “Ready for Bernie Sanders 2016” and “Bet on Bernie 2016” before the FEC made him change it. The super PAC has also failed to file campaign finance disclosures, in violation of federal law.
