Two dead after vehicle collides with train in eastern Kansas

SPRING HILL, Kan. (AP) — Two people are dead after their vehicle was struck by a freight train in a rural area of eastern Kansas.

The crash happened around 6 p.m. Thursday in Miami County, south of the Kansas City area. Police at the scene said the vehicle and part of the train erupted in fire after the impact.

The collision happened after the driver went around the rail crossing’s arms and got stuck on the tracks, the Miami County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

The release said the victims are believed to be an elderly couple from Spring Hill. Their names weren't immediately released.

Missing 54 years, slain Champaign officer's badge reclaimed

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Zane Ziegler, a retired Champaign police officer, was curious last month when a fellow exhibitor at a police memorabilia show said that he had a vintage badge from the department.

When Ziegler saw the star emblazoned with the number 80, “I about fell over,” he said.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette reported that it was the badge of Robert Tatman, a Champaign officer killed on duty with his own service revolver on Nov. 25, 1967. The case remains unsolved, and for 54 years, so was the question of where his badge went.

Ziegler bought the star from the other vendor at the National Police Collector's Show in St. Charles, Missouri, and has reclaimed it for Champaign, where he was an officer from 1975 to 2003 and remains the department's historian.

Florida fires coach Dan Mullen after loss to Mizzou, completing stunning fall

(AP) -- One bad season at Florida was one too many for Dan Mullen.

The standard for success when it comes to coaching the Gators is about as high as it can get in college football.

Florida fired Mullen on Sunday, a day after his sixth loss in nine games, two months after the Gators went toe-to-toe with defending national champion Alabama and a year after they had a chance to make the College Football Playoff.

"This is a place where you should have a high level of success over a long period of time,” Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin said.

Kevin Strickland lights Kansas City Mayor's Christmas Tree at Crown Center

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) --- From prison to a stage at Crown Center, this week has been an emotional one for Kevin Strickland during his long journey to fight for his freedom and prove his innocence.

Following his long-sought release from custody, Strickland flipped a switch to light up the 100-foot tree Mayor’s Christmas Tree in front of a cheering crowd Friday.

It’s one of many firsts he will experience now that a judge ruled that his wrongful conviction must be set aside. Strickland was incarcerated for more than 40 years. He was convicted in 1979 of three murders that he maintained he did not commit.

Strickland was released Tuesday from the Western Missouri Correctional Center. Judge James Welsh ruled earlier this week that the evidence used to convict Strickland had been disproven and a key witness recanted before she died.

“I’m still in disbelief,” Strickland said Tuesday with his attorneys standing by his side.

Families of killed MoDOT workers hold vigil as investigation continues

ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- The families of two Missouri Department of Transportation workers held a vigil Saturday night as they continue to wait for the investigation into the incident to be completed.

James Brooks and Kaitlyn Anderson were killed when a driver struck them on November 18, according to MoDOT. Brooks, 58, was a senior maintenance worker and worked for the department for nine years. Anderson, 25, was an intermediate maintenance worker and worked for the department for two years. Anderson was five months pregnant.

Missouri State Highway Patrol said Brooks, Anderson and another worker were restriping Telegraph Road on the ramp to Interstate 255 when they were hit by a vehicle around 11:30 a.m. The third worker was taken to the hospital.

MSHP crash records listed Michael S. Brown as the other person involved in the crash. News 4 asked MoDOT to confirm that Brown was the injured worker taken to the hospital.

Josephine Baker, 1st Black woman honored in French Pantheon

PARIS (AP) — France is inducting Josephine Baker — Missouri-born cabaret dancer, French World War II spy and civil rights activist — into its Pantheon, the first Black woman honored in the final resting place of France’s most revered luminaries.

On Tuesday, a coffin carrying soils from the U.S., France and Monaco — places where Baker made her mark — will be deposited inside the domed Pantheon monument overlooking the Left Bank of Paris. Her body will stay in Monaco, at the request of her family.

French President Emmanuel Macron decided on her entry into the Pantheon, responding to a petition lobbying for her “pantheonization.” In addition to honoring an exceptional figure in French history, the move is meant to send a message against racism and celebrate U.S.-French connections.

“She embodies, before anything, women’s freedom,” Laurent Kupferman, the author of the petition for the move, told The Associated Press.

Pitching a golden opportunity, Cardinals outbid multiple suitors to woo lefty Matz and ruin Mets own

With the right increase in money and years and the added securities that come only from gold, the Cardinals outbid multiple suitors to land a coveted starter and, in an unexpected, competitive perk, help irk a billionaire owner out east.

The Cardinals and lefty Steven Matz agreed to a four-year, $44-million contract late Tuesday night, multiple sources with knowledge of the contract confirmed to the Post-Dispatch. The deal will be finalized after Thanksgiving pending a physical scheduled for this weekend. Matz, 30, chose the Cardinals ahead of offers from his first team, the Mets, and his most recent team, Toronto, as well as at least three other clubs. The Cardinals sweetened their appeal with the fourth year on the contract.

No other free-agent starter threw a higher percentage of sinkers in 2021 and Matz appealed to the Cardinals because of his willingness to utilize the defense behind him and the record five Gold Glove Award winners the Cardinals will have returning.

Matz was drawn by that pitch to him, conversations over Zoom with team officials, and the clubhouse culture he learned about, a source close to the lefty described.

Better to give: St. Louis high on generous-cities list

We give and we give and this is the thanks we get: a No. 12 ranking on a list of "Most Generous Cities."

And that's not too shabby, since the survey looked at the largest 130 cities in the U.S., which means we cracked the top 10%.

A total of 13 factors were examined by Lawnstarter and placed into two general "generosity" categories — individual and community.

We were No. 7 in the community sector, which looked at things such as soup kitchens, homeless shelters and food banks. (We were No. 2 when it came to food banks per capita.)

St. Louis police department hides key details about homicide cases from the public

2020 was a bad year for killings in St. Louis.

The city nearly broke a 30-year-old record for the number of homicides in a year. It had the highest homicide rate among the nation’s large cities. And as killings have increased from 2018 through 2020, the percentage of homicide cases closed by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department has declined. In 2020, detectives solved only a third of the city’s homicides.

With a growing number of killings going unsolved, the police department has shielded critical information from the public.

For months, St. Louis Public Radio and APM Reports, an investigative team with American Public Media, sought data from the department to better understand how often St. Louis police solve homicides. Under Missouri’s public records law, the requests covered information about each case, including victim name, age, race, location of the crime and whether an arrest was made.
