NEW YORK (AP) — Remaining performances of "The Nutcracker" ballet have been canceled due to positive tests for coronavirus, the New York City Ballet announced Tuesday.
The famed ballet by George Balanchine, a staple of the winter performing arts season in New York, was scheduled to present performances through Sunday at Lincoln Center's David H. Koch Theater.

US warships stay in Mediterranean amid Ukraine, Russia fears
WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier strike group to stay in the Mediterranean Sea region rather than move on to the Middle East, amid worries about the buildup of thousands of Russian troops near the Ukraine border.
A defense official said Tuesday that the change in the schedule of the USS Harry S. Truman, and the five American warships accompanying it, reflects the need for a persistent presence in Europe. It is necessary in order to reassure U.S. allies and partners in the region, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss military deployment details.
The U.S. and Western allies have watched as the buildup of Russian troops near the border grew to a peak of an estimated 100,000, fueling fears that Moscow was preparing to invade Ukraine.
Russia annexed Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula in 2014 and shortly after threw its support behind a separatist rebellion in the country's east. Over more than seven years, the fighting has killed over 14,000 people and devastated Ukraine's industrial heartland, known as the Donbas.

Skeletal remains found in Branson those of MMA fighter
BRANSON, Mo. (AP) — Branson police say skeletal remains found last week in a wooded area were those of David Koenig, an amateur mixed martial arts fighter who had been missing for nearly two years.
A man looking for deer antlers found the remains on Dec. 22. Police said Monday that the remains were those of Koenig, who was last seen on Feb. 8, 2020.
A forensic pathologist examined the remains and found no trauma. The examination determined that foul play was not believed to be a factor in Koenig’s death.

Missouri's largest county sees sharp rise in COVID-19 cases
The number of new COVID-19 cases is rising sharply in Missouri’s largest county, and officials warn that case counts will almost certainly rise over the next couple of weeks as the Omicron variant takes hold.
St. Louis County officials said Monday that the county of about 1 million residents averaged 619 new cases per day over the past seven days, which was 58% more than it averaged over the previous seven days.
“St. Louis County has experienced its biggest surge in COVID-19 cases in more than a year, with more than 1,000 new cases reported on Thursday,” Democratic County Executive Sam Page said at a news conference. “Not since November of 2020 have we seen such numbers.”
He also expressed concern about the high positivity rate, which means that many people are likely infected and don’t know it.

DC is an omicron hot spot, new COVID-19 data shows 3,330% increase in cases
WASHINGTON (7News) — New data released Monday shows a surge in COVID-19 cases in Washington D.C. making the nation's capital an omicron hot spot.
Cases have gone from a daily average of 60 at Thanksgiving to nearly 2,000 currently. That's a staggering 3,300% increase from Thanksgiving.
D.C. reports 9,200 new positive cases between Dec. 23-26, bringing the district's total to 88,765.
A total of 1,209 District of Columbia residents have lost their lives to COVID over the span of the pandemic.

Citing COVID, judge prods Ghislaine Maxwell's jury to work longer hours
NEW YORK (AP) — The judge presiding over the sex trafficking trial of Ghislaine Maxwell cited an "astronomical spike" in the number of coronavirus cases in New York City as she explained Tuesday why she was urging jurors to work longer hours.
Judge Alison J. Nathan said aloud what had largely gone unmentioned in her previous requests to get the jury to work an extra day last week and longer hours this week as it decides whether Maxwell recruited and groomed teenage girls to be sexually abused by Jeffrey Epstein. The jury declined to work an extra day last week.
Late Monday, the judge told jurors they should expect to deliberate until at least 6 p.m. beginning Tuesday rather than stopping at 5 p.m., as they had earlier.
Laura Menninger, a defense lawyer, told Nathan on Monday that any suggestion that the jury stay later "is beginning to sound like urging them to hurry up."

North Dakota man convicted of killing 4 gets life in prison
MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota man convicted of killing four people in what authorities say was one of the most gruesome crimes in the state's history was sentenced Tuesday to multiple life prison terms without the possibility of parole.
South Central District Judge David Reich sentenced Chad Isaak, 47, to consecutive life terms for each of his four murder convictions. One of Isaak's lawyers had asked Reich to allow for the possibility of parole.
Isaak, wearing a blue mask, stood still and stared straight ahead as the judge delivered his verdicts. Before learning his fate, Isaak briefly addressed the court, saying "I can honestly tell you I'm not a murderer, and that's all I have to say."
A Morton County jury in August found Isaak guilty of killing RJR Maintenance and Management co-owner Robert Fakler, 52; and employees Adam Fuehrer, 42; Bill Cobb, 50; and his wife, Lois Cobb, 45.

Woman caught with Darth Vader bear with hidden knives at airport
SYRACUSE N.Y. (WSTM) — Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers at the Philadelphia International Airport stopped a Cortland, N.Y. woman and her young son from boarding a plane with two knives sewn into the middle of a stuffed Darth Vader bear on Monday.
Officers say the stuffed bear, which appeared to be a black bear in a space-age technology suit and cape, triggered an alarm on a security checkpoint X-ray machine.
The X-ray image showed something hidden inside the bear and after looking closely, officers say they noticed the bear had been re-stitched.
TSA officers removed the stitches from the back of the stuffed bear and found two knives ‘artfully’ hidden inside in the middle of the bear’s stuffing.

Baltimore tops 300 homicides for 7th consecutive year
BALTIMORE (WBFF) — Baltimore surpassed 300 homicides in 2021, making it the seventh consecutive year the city has topped the mark.
Among the victims, Baltimore police officer Keona Holley, a 39-year-old mother of four who was ambushed while on patrol Dec. 16. Officer Holley died a week later after being taken off life support, the day before Christmas Eve.
When questioned about the violence and crime plan, the mayor and commissioner often pointed out the department is getting more guns off city streets than in years past, and that overall violent crime is slightly down in the city.
