Changes in the Ferguson Court System

City of Ferguson Municipal Court Judge Donald McCullin, who was appointed to his position in June 2015, is making sweeping changes in the Ferguson Municipal Court. Judge McCullin announced today an order to withdraw all arrest warrants issued before December 31, 2014 and an order changing the conditions for Pre-Trial Release. Defendants will then be given new court dates along with alternative dispositions, such as payment plans, community service and/or commuting fines for indigent persons.

Judge McCullin indicated these orders will meet and exceed the requirements set forth in Senate Bill 5 and Supreme Court Rule 37.65.

“These changes should continue the process of restoring confidence in the Court, alleviating fears of the consequences of appearing in
Court, and giving many residents a fresh start,” said McCullin. “Many individuals whose license has been suspended will be able to obtain them and take advantage of the benefits of being able to drive. Moreover, defendants will not be disadvantaged in being afforded pre-trial release because of the inability to make bond.”

If a defendant continually fails to appear on their scheduled court date, an arrest warrant may be issued and/or a request made to the Director of Revenue to seek a setoff of the defendant’s tax return. If an arrest warrant is issued for a minor traffic violation, the defendant will not be incarcerated, but instead released on their own recognizance and given another court date.

National Waffle Day The first United States patent for a waffle iron was issued to Cornelius Swarthout of Troy, New York on August 24, 1869. In honor of this anniversary, National Waffle Day is observed each year on August 24th.

Eaten throughout the world, a waffle is a leavened batter or dough that is cooked between two plates that are patterned to give a characteristic size, shape and surface impression. Based on the type of waffle iron used as well as recipe used there are many variations of waffles.

“In the late 14th century the first known waffle recipe was penned in an anonymous manuscript, Le Ménagier de Paris, written by a husband as a set of instructions to his young wife. While it technically contains four recipes, all are a variation of the first: Beat some eggs in a bowl, season with salt and add wine. Toss in some flour, and mix. Then fill, little by little, two irons at a time with as much of the paste as a slice of cheese is large. Then close the iron and cook both sides. If the dough does not detach easily from the iron, coat it first with a piece of cloth that has been soaked in oil or grease. The other three variations explain how cheese is to be placed in between two layers of batter, grated and mixed in to the batter, or left out, along with the eggs.” (Wikipedia)

Knife Day Knife Day is the day to appreciate the knives that folk use on a daily basis. This day is a celebration of this marvellous tool that has been with humans since the dawn of time. The evolution of knives has been a remarkable feat – from knives made of bone, stone and flint, to modern creations using titanium, bronze, iron and steel. Nobody can deny the knife is one of man’s most useful tools – for cooking, eating, fishing, hunting, and not to forget the oh so handy Swiss Army knife. To make the most of Knife Day, why not test your knife chopping skills in the kitchen, or buy that knife set you’ve always wanted. Invite family and friends over to compare and swap knives, or get together to clean and sharpen your knives. Then there’s nothing like having a cake and enjoying a slice by the knife. And instead of wishing one another to have a nice day, why not just say: “Have a knife day!” https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/knife-

Ride The Wind Day There’s no better feeling than the wind in your hair as you look out at a beautiful horizon. Ride the Wind Day is an excellent opportunity to marvel at all things flying, and perhaps take part in some flying yourself. Wind powers movement in many different ways, helping us travel through air and over water, as well as providing us with energy to use in our homes.

Created to celebrate the anniversary of the first man powered flight, Ride the Wind Day is a fun day that all members of the family can take part in. Some ideas for celebrating this special day include kite flying, windsurfing, hang gliding, making and sailing boats, watching birds soar through the sky or simply a picnic on a windy day, watching the wind in the trees. Children will love making paper aeroplanes or other flying toys and watching them zoom through the air. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/ride-the-wind-day/

National Chocolate Pecan Pie Day If you have a sweet tooth, Chocolate Pecan Pie Day is the perfect opportunity to indulge. You needn’t feel too guilty about grabbing a piece of pie, because pecans have all kinds of health benefits. They contain more valuable antioxidants than any other type of nut, plus plenty of fibre, minerals and vitamins.

The word pecan comes from the Native American Algonquin language. As the only nuts native to north America, pecans have been eaten for generations in both the USA and Mexico, but they’ve only been grown commercially since the late 19th century. One of the most popular ways to enjoy these buttery, crunchy nuts is to bake them in a pie, and adding chocolate makes it even more delicious. The perfect way to celebrate Chocolate Pecan Pie Day is to bake a pie for family and friends. Go nuts and enjoy yourself! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/chocolate-pecan-pie-day/

World Mosquito Day was first established in 1897, when the link between mosquitos and malaria transmission was discovered by Sir Ronald Ross. It aims to raise awareness about the causes of malaria and how it can be prevented, as well as fundraising for research into the cure of malaria. It is also a salute to the groundbreaking work of Sir Ross and scientists who have followed him.

The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine celebrates World Mosquito Day with exhibitions and parties designed both to entertain and to inform, while other celebrations include Malaria No More’s ‘Mozzy Air’ campaign, encouraging people to take anti-malarial when flying to malaria zones, and Nothing But Nets’ twitter campaigns to provide mosquito nets for poor communities.

Get involved by holding a fundraiser to provide nets or quinine, distributing information about the precautions people should take when travelling to danger spots, or celebrating the achievements of research into mosquitoes and how to prevent the diseases they carry.

National Lemonade Day In the midst of a hot summer day, nothing is more refreshing than a tall glass of ice-cold lemonade! Annually celebrated during the summer month of August on the 20th, it is National Lemonade Day.

UFCW rips A&P giveback request

http://supermarketnews.com/ap-bankruptcy-2015/ufcw-rips-ap-giveback-request

A&’s request to back out of commitments to workers so as to use the savings to provide equitable disbursements to lenders is “true only in the Alice-in-Wonderland world of corporate reorganization,” the United Food and Commercials Workers union said Friday.

In a lengthy objection to A&P’s motion to strike parts of its collective bargaining agreements with unions filed with U.S. Bankruptcy Court Friday, the UFCW said the retailer’s request deprives benefits to workers that were negotiated as part of A&P’s 2012 emergence from its previous Chapter 11 filing.

Moreover, the union argued, the request fails to meet conditions of Section 1113 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, which authorizes debtors to make union contract modifications only in cases where the proposed changes are “essential to the continuation of the debtor’s business” or are necessary “to avoid irreparable harm to the estate.”

California enacts worker retention law

http://supermarketnews.com/retail-financial/california-enacts-worker-retention-law

A new law requiring supermarkets to retain employees after a change in ownership has been signed into law by California Gov. Jerry Brown — ostensibly the first statewide worker retention law covering private-sector employees in the U.S.

The legislation, signed Monday, will take effect Jan. 1, 2016. It protects employees at stores of at least 15,000 square feet from being fired during a 90-day transition period after the store has been sold; following the transition, the new employer must provide a written performance evaluation and, if the evaluation is satisfactory, must consider an offer of continued employment, while retaining the right to terminate an employee for cause at any time during or after the transition period.

It potentially covers nearly 384,000 supermarket employees.

Several California cities have previously adopted similar local ordinances, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Santa Monica, Alameda and Gardena. The state also has a law providing protection for janitorial maintenance employees during a change of contractors at worksites.
