Changes in the Ferguson Court System

City of Ferguson Municipal Court Judge Donald McCullin, who was appointed to his position in June 2015, is making sweeping changes in the Ferguson Municipal Court. Judge McCullin announced today an order to withdraw all arrest warrants issued before December 31, 2014 and an order changing the conditions for Pre-Trial Release. Defendants will then be given new court dates along with alternative dispositions, such as payment plans, community service and/or commuting fines for indigent persons.

Judge McCullin indicated these orders will meet and exceed the requirements set forth in Senate Bill 5 and Supreme Court Rule 37.65.

“These changes should continue the process of restoring confidence in the Court, alleviating fears of the consequences of appearing in
Court, and giving many residents a fresh start,” said McCullin. “Many individuals whose license has been suspended will be able to obtain them and take advantage of the benefits of being able to drive. Moreover, defendants will not be disadvantaged in being afforded pre-trial release because of the inability to make bond.”

If a defendant continually fails to appear on their scheduled court date, an arrest warrant may be issued and/or a request made to the Director of Revenue to seek a setoff of the defendant’s tax return. If an arrest warrant is issued for a minor traffic violation, the defendant will not be incarcerated, but instead released on their own recognizance and given another court date.

National Waffle Day The first United States patent for a waffle iron was issued to Cornelius Swarthout of Troy, New York on August 24, 1869. In honor of this anniversary, National Waffle Day is observed each year on August 24th.

Eaten throughout the world, a waffle is a leavened batter or dough that is cooked between two plates that are patterned to give a characteristic size, shape and surface impression. Based on the type of waffle iron used as well as recipe used there are many variations of waffles.

Protests continue on Walton following officer involved shooting

ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – Wednesday night in the aftermath of the shooting of 18-year-old Mansur Ball-Bey by St. Louis police officers, protesters are gathered in the area of Walton and Page on the city’s north side. Police had earlier in the day went to the neighborhood to execute a search warrant, when Ball-Bey and another suspect ran from the back of a home. Ball-Bey pointed a gun at officers who fired at the suspects in fear for their lives.

Ball-Bey ran for a short distance, before collapsing and dying at the scene. The other suspect got away.

Police say they recovered a stolen hand gun from the scene near Ball-Bey body.

As news of the shooting spread, crowds gathered near the site of the shooting.

A&’s request to back out of commitments to workers so as to use the savings to provide equitable disbursements to lenders is “true only in the Alice-in-Wonderland world of corporate reorganization,” the United Food and Commercials Workers union said Friday.

In a lengthy objection to A&P’s motion to strike parts of its collective bargaining agreements with unions filed with U.S. Bankruptcy Court Friday, the UFCW said the retailer’s request deprives benefits to workers that were negotiated as part of A&P’s 2012 emergence from its previous Chapter 11 filing.

Moreover, the union argued, the request fails to meet conditions of Section 1113 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, which authorizes debtors to make union contract modifications only in cases where the proposed changes are “essential to the continuation of the debtor’s business” or are necessary “to avoid irreparable harm to the estate.”

California enacts worker retention law

A new law requiring supermarkets to retain employees after a change in ownership has been signed into law by California Gov. Jerry Brown — ostensibly the first statewide worker retention law covering private-sector employees in the U.S.

The legislation, signed Monday, will take effect Jan. 1, 2016. It protects employees at stores of at least 15,000 square feet from being fired during a 90-day transition period after the store has been sold; following the transition, the new employer must provide a written performance evaluation and, if the evaluation is satisfactory, must consider an offer of continued employment, while retaining the right to terminate an employee for cause at any time during or after the transition period.

It potentially covers nearly 384,000 supermarket employees.

Several California cities have previously adopted similar local ordinances, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Santa Monica, Alameda and Gardena. The state also has a law providing protection for janitorial maintenance employees during a change of contractors at worksites.
