National Taco Day It is not known exactly when taco day originated, but tacos themselves have been around for a long time. They were first referenced by that name at the end of the 19th century, but the conquistador Cortez mentioned a meal prepared with tortillas as far back as 1520! Those would have been the soft wheat or corn tortillas. Hard taco shells are a much more recent innovation. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/taco-day/

Vodka Day Vodka Day is a great time to raise your glasses to one of the world’s favourite alcoholic drinks. While vodka is often associated with Russia, and some of the finest and most expensive vodkas in the world come from there, it is a drink that is produced in many countries and enjoyed all over the world. Vodka is the Slavic word for ‘little water’ and is traditionally made by mixing water with distilled grains or potatoes, although today many popular brands add flavourings such as fruits and sugars. Purists drink vodka neat, but it makes the perfect mixer and is the main ingredient in many favourite cocktails, including the martini, the screwdriver and the Bloody Mary. Vodka Day is a great opportunity to enjoy a new cocktail or try one of the hundreds of different brands of vodka. Many bars and restaurants hold special promotions and tastings to encourage drinkers to celebrate this well-loved spirit. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/vodka-day/

Improve Your Office Day Working in a plain, corporate environment can be demoralising at the best of times; so why not take some steps to improve your work environment? Improve Your Office Day encourages you to make your desk and surrounding area a more pleasant and enjoyable place – why not consider buying some flowers or artwork? Think outside the box, perhaps, and upgrade your mousemat, keyboard, chair or filing system! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/improve-your-office-day/

National Ship in A Bottle Day If you have ever admired the craftsmanship and beauty of a traditional ship in a bottle, you will be pleased to hear that this clever piece of art has its own annual day. Ship in a Bottle Day celebrates the centuries-old skill of creating a miniature, fully-rigged ship that sits magically inside a glass bottle. The secret lies in assembling the ship with the masts and sails hinged and lying flat so that it will fit through the neck of the bottle and once it is inside, gently pulling on strings to bring the pieces of the model ship upright until it fits inside the bottle. Sailors originally made these ships to pass the time on long voyages and today, many people around the world still practice the skilled art. Ship in a Bottle Day is held on the birthday of Jack Hinkley, the founder of the Ship in Bottle Association of America. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/ship-in-a-bottle-day/

World Habitat Day It’s been 3 decades since the United Nations General Assembly announced to the world that it is a human right to have a decent place to live. So it was that they created the most important holiday for those without proper homes, World Habitat Day. Habitat for Humanity works side by side with their global partners to work to provide homes for everyone who needs one, and encouraging people to work towards a better future for themselves and the world. The story of Habitat for Humanity started in 1976, and has since spread all over the world to bring together volunteers, investors, and businesses to build homes and provide shelter for those in need. Homes give a family a sense of strength, self-reliance, and stability, valuable treasures in an ever-changing world. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/habitat-day/

World Architecture Day Created in 2005 by the Union International des Architects (UIA), World Architecture Day is a day to show appreciation for the work architects do and to celebrate some of the great global architectural works. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-architecture-day/

Techies Day Techies Day was originally developed for the purpose of helping high school students become educated about careers in technology. It was first established in 1998 by techies.com with the support of CNET Networks. The world ahead will see ever greater integrations of technology into our day to day lives, and with those innovations will come the need for the truly technologically savvy, those who know their way around this technology driven world and can help those who are perhaps less knowledgeable find their way. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/techies-day/

World Day of Bullying Prevention Bullying has been a growing problem in schools, especially in past years. While some consider hazing and the abuse that some children take in school to be a typical part of the adolescent experience, rising suicide rates and violence in school has led officials to start taking a hard, zero-tolerance stance on bullying. If you were picked in school as a kid, or maybe it continued into your college and adult years, World Day Of Bullying Prevention is bringing attention to your plight, and the plight of others who experienced this incredibly difficult, and dangerous, part of many children’s lives. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/stop-bullying-day/

International Day of Non-violence This world has seen its share of bloody wars that ended countless lives and filled many more with grief. No matter what country you go to, there are stories of how someone’s greed or lust for power resulted in the killing of innocent people and the destruction of beautiful cities. Even wars that were fought for a good cause, like the Civil War of the United States of America, that resulted in slavery being abolished, have been responsible for a great many deaths. Fortunately, however, there are people in this world who have gone about making the changes they thought necessary without violence or pure brute force, and these are the people that the International Day of Non-Violence celebrates. No matter where you live, there’s no denying that a day celebrating non-violent ways of making a statement and bringing about change is long overdue, and that these peaceful strategies for fighting injustice more than definitely deserve their own day. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/international-day-of-non-violence/

National Custodial Workers Day Custodial Worker Day is an annual celebration where people get together to pay tribute to and give their thanks to those men and women who work tirelessly to clean and maintain the many buildings that are used for all kinds of reasons on a daily basis. The purpose is to show these maintenance workers that all they do is recognised and appreciated, and to prevent them feeling like what they are doing is an otherwise thankless job. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/custodial-worker-day/

Name Your Car Day It’s very common for people to name their boats so why is it that some people forget to name their car? Let’s face it, our cars do a lot for us and many of us would be lost without them so why not take the time to think of a good name for your daily companion. If it weren’t for him/her how would you get to work? How would you go shopping? How would you take the kids to soccer practice? https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/name-your-car-day/

World Farm Animals Day Farm animals are cute, and they also play an important role in modern society. Take some time to appreciate them this World Farm Animals Day. Created in memory of Ghandi, who believed in treating all living beings with respect, World Farm Animals Day was founded to highlight the poor conditions suffered by some farm animals, and promote awareness in the hope something may be done to improve their lives. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/farm-animals-day/

CD Player Day Music collections have undergone some pretty severe changes throughout history, from Vinyl to 8-Track to Cassette to CD, to MP3 Players, and onto our phones. Arguably one of the biggest changes to happen in the music world was the CD, and an icon of this change was the CD Player. As soon as it entered the scene, cassette tapes were on their way to being a thing of the past, with CD’s soon replacing all the clunky cassettes and coming packed full of special features and more music than a cassette could hold! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/cd-player-day/

International Day of Older Persons With people living and working longer, it’s increasingly important that we recognise the importance of supporting senior citizens and OAPs within our society. Senior Citizens Day is an opportunity to acknowledge the long-term contribution and dedication of older people, and to ensure that we’re doing our best to give something back to older people. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/older-peoples-day/

World Vegetarian Day World Vegetarian Day was established by the North American Vegetarian Society (NAVS) in 1977 to help promote the vegetarian way of life, and educate people on the health and social benefits of making the move to eliminate meat from their diets. As omnivores, humans are capable of surviving in complete health on a diet that contains no animal meat or products of any kind, but are there other benefits than merely a clean conscience? https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/vegetarian-day/

Mud Pack Day Mud has been known to have health properties for a very long time, and has been a popular way of sustaining beauty and staving off old age. No, we’re not talking about the mud you can find in the mud puddles after a heavy rain, nor the clay down at your local riverside, though we could be! You’d be surprised where some of the beauty products come from that can stave off old age and leave you looking amazing. There’s even hot mud pits, like hot springs, that people visit to sit in and enjoy the health and beauty benefits of nature’s own spa. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/mud-pack-day/

International Podcast Day History of International Podcast Day
Let’s start off with explaining what a podcast is, shall we? A podcast is essentially a serialized show that is very much like a radio show. It’s released in a downloadable or streamable format through various sites, and apps, available anywhere you have internet access. There are thousands or even millions of available podcasts in every conceivable genre, with more showing up with every passing day, and unlike radio broadcasts, they can be accessed by anyone, anywhere. Podcasts tend to have a smaller following than most big radio stations, but its worth mentioning that the podcasts themselves are very targetted to a specific audience. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/international-podcast-day/

Extra Virgin Olive Oil Day Olive oil is the gold standard of all oils. Loaded with antioxidants, it is monounsaturated fat and everyone needs fat in his or her diet. The Mediterranean Diet is considered the healthiest diet. The cornerstone and foundation of the Mediterranean Diet is extra virgin olive oil. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/extra-virgin-olive-oil-day/

International Translation Day aunched in 1953, International Translation Day is a relatively recent entry into the calendar of world events. Established by the International Federation of Translators, the annual celebration is an opportunity to pay tribute to the work of translators who endeavour to make the world a slightly smaller place by breaking down language barriers and allowing great literature to be enjoyed far more widely. The work of translators is seen as being of growing importance due to growing opportunities for international travel and globalisation of trade markets. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/international-translation-day/

US probing possible worker abuse by Wells Fargo

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Labor Department is investigating possible abuses of employees by Wells Fargo in connection with the bank's alleged efforts to open millions of unauthorized accounts to meet sales goals.

A group of Democratic senators last week asked the department to investigate whether Wells Fargo tellers, branch managers and customer service reps were harassed and threatened with termination in the aggressive sales push. A complete review of cases and complaints is needed to determine if the second-largest U.S. bank violated the Fair Labor Standards Act, the senators said. About 5,300 employees have been fired since 2011.

In a letter Monday, Labor Secretary Tom Perez said the department takes the senators' concerns seriously and has started a "top-to-bottom" review of labor practices at San Francisco-based Wells Fargo.

"We take the concerns raised in your letter very seriously," Perez told the senators, led by Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts. "Given the serious nature of the allegations ... and recent media reports, I have directed enforcement agencies within the department to conduct a top-to-bottom review of cases, complaints or violations concerning Wells Fargo over the last several years."

St. Louis Area Diaper Bank wants to collect 100,000 diapers to mark its first year

As the St. Louis Area Diaper Bank approaches one year in operation this weekend, the organization is running a week-long drive to collect 100,000 diapers.

According to the National Diaper Bank Network, one out of three families in the United States cannot afford diapers. The cost of diapers can total about $1,000 a year per child and for some low-income families, buying them can take up to 15 percent of the parents' take-home pay.

Locally, the greatest need for diapers exists in the city of St. Louis and north St. Louis County. Because the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as food stamps, cannot be used to buy diapers, food pantries faced pressure from families that needed them.

"There's not an easy way for families who don't have a lot of resources to get diapers and the diaper bank can help fill that need and step in," said Kimberly Singer, a board member at the diaper bank.

Shareholders approve massive beer deal: a new era for Anheuser-Busch

Another chapter in the more than 150-year story of beer in St. Louis is close to being written. The roughly $100 billion deal to create the world’s largest brewer has cleared its final substantial hurdle. Shareholders of Anheuser-Busch InBev and SABMiller have voted in favor of the merger. There are still some procedural steps, but it is expected to close Oct. 10.

The shareholders approved the merger during meetings Wednesday in London, which is the base of SABMiller, and Brussels, where the headquarters of AB InBev are located. The deal essentially creates a new company that will keep the Anheuser-Busch InBev name.

“We are pleased that our shareholders’ vote brings us one step closer to combining our companies, teams, strong heritage and passion for brewing,” AB InBev Chief Executive Officer Carlos Brito said in a statement from the brewing giant.

Federal judge denies union’s appeal to block right-to-work law

A federal judge announced Monday his decision to deny a union plea to repeal Wisconsin's “right-to-work” law, after opponents claimed it violated the Fifth Amendment.

Three unions challenging the bill allege it is unconstitutional on the grounds that it results in an unlawful seizure of private property without fair compensation. Federal law constrains unions to represent all workers in the bargaining union while preventing them from collecting fees for representation.

Gov. Scott Walker worked with the state Legislature to pass the right-to-work law in February 2015. The law protects non-union members from being required to pay union fees, sparking union member concerns that “the nonmember of the union will reap the benefits of being represented by the union during a grievance but he will pay nothing for those benefits.”
