Right To Work Goes Down in Missouri

Proposition A: Keep Right-to-Work Law

Missouri voters will decide the fate of the state’s so-called right-to-work law, which, if it went into effect, would ensure that private sector workers no longer had to join a union or pay a fee if their workplace was unionized.

Not a big enough margin in my opinion, nevertheless it was good to see this effort by the legislature soundly defeated. That said, at least one of the GOP legislators has commented that they will simply pass it again.

Brookstone Files For Bankruptcy, Plans To Close Mall Stores

Brookstone Co. Inc. has filed for bankruptcy for the second time.

The retailer — known for massage chairs and other gadgets — announced Thursday that it will be shutting down about 100 of its mall locations with hopes of selling its remaining assets, according to the filing document.

In 2014 it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and sold its assets to the China-based conglomerate Sanpower Group. Currently, under Sanpower, the company operates a total of 137 retail stores, 35 of which are located in airports.

Loss of foot traffic in shopping malls was cited by Greg Tribou, Brookstone's chief financial officer, as a major reason for filing bankruptcy.

Procter & Gamble, in a Strategy Shift, Moves to Raise Prices

Prices are going Up!

Procter & Gamble Co. PG 0.85% said it was raising prices on some of its biggest brands, a strategy shift after the consumer-products giant reported another quarter of lackluster revenue growth.

After more than a year of trying to combat weak demand with lower prices on staples like Tide detergent and Gillette razors, executives said Tuesday the company was changing course. P&G said it would increase prices on its Pampers brand in North America by 4% on average and by 5% on its Bounty, Charmin and Puffs brands.

The increases go into effect later this year or in early 2019. As the biggest player, P&G tends to drive industrywide pricing moves.

Actor John Goodman in Missouri ad opposing right to work

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Actor John Goodman is featured in a radio ad opposing a right-to-work law on Missouri’s Aug. 7 ballot.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Tuesday that the ad is airing in the St. Louis market.

Goodman says the law is marketed as a way to help workers. But he tells voters to “look a little deeper, and you’ll see it’s all about corporate greed.”

Goodman starred on “Roseanne.” He went to high school and college in Missouri.

A Toys R Us death blow: Mattel to lay off 2,200 workers

Mattel, the maker of Barbie and Hot Wheels, said Wednesday it is laying off 2,200 workers — or 22 percent of its corporate workforce — as sales slide following the liquidation of Toys R Us.

The toy giant, based in El Segundo, Calif., said sales fell for the fourth consecutive quarter as it struggled to make up for lost business from the closure of nearly 800 Toys R Us stores across the country. Revenue dropped 14 percent to $841 million in the most recent quarter, while losses continued to mount.

“There has been a big discrepancy between our financial performance over the last few years and where the company should be,” chief executive Ynon Kreiz said in a statement.

Shares of Mattel fell as much as 9 percent in after-hours trading following the announcement.
