NLRB sues Starbucks for retaliating against 3 workers involved in unionizing

The National Labor Relations Board has sued the coffee shop chain Starbucks for allegedly retaliating against three employees who were involved in organizing a union.

One worker was disciplined, suspended and discharged; another was "constructively discharged" and a third was put on unpaid leave after the company revoked "recently granted accommodations," the NLRB said in a press release.

Cornele Overstreet, director of the NLRB region based in Phoenix, asked the U.S. District Court in a filing on Friday to immediately reinstate the employees with their usual schedules and accommodations, among other requests.

In rejecting death row inmate's case, judge says law enforcement isn't a profession

An Arizona inmate who is mere weeks away from his scheduled execution argued the state's clemency board was unfairly loaded with law enforcement. But a state judge has disagreed, saying that law enforcement does not meet the definition of a "profession."

Earlier this month, the Arizona Supreme Court issued an execution warrant – the first in eight years – for Clarence Wayne Dixon, a 66-year-old prisoner convicted of first-degree murder. But Dixon's attorneys argued Tuesday that the Arizona Board of Clemency, which is set to meet on April 28 to decide whether to stay the execution, is illegally made up of too many members who had careers in law enforcement.

This past Tuesday, Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Stephen Hopkins ruled against Dixon.

"Historically, law enforcement has not been thought of as a "profession," Hopkins said in his decision. "It is not regulated as other professions are, and has little of the characteristics of what is typically considered a profession."

Global Times article hints at launch of 3rd Chinese aircraft carrier

A media outlet affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party has published an article hinting at the launch of a third Chinese naval aircraft carrier later this year.

The Global Times published the article on Saturday, the 73rd anniversary of the formation of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy.

It referred to a promotional video released by the navy on the progress of China's aircraft carrier program.

The video shows pilots and crew at work and outlines the progress the navy has made in the decade since it deployed its first carrier, the Liaoning, in 2012.

NFL will have three games on Christmas Day, a Sunday in 2022

The NFL will capitalize on Christmas Day falling on a Sunday.

The league will have three games on Dec. 25 for the first time: two in the afternoon on CBS and Fox, followed by a prime-time contest on NBC. NFL vice president of broadcasting Mike North revealed the tripleheader on a podcast hosted by WGR radio host and Buffalo Bills sideline reporter Sal Capaccio.

“Christmas, when it falls on an NFL game day, we’ve had a lot of success there, all due respect to our friends at the NBA. It is something that our friends are interested in,” North said. “If Christmas falls on a Sunday, it makes perfect sense.”

It will be the third straight year the league has played on Christmas. Last year, Green Bay’s 24-22 victory over Cleveland averaged 28.6 million viewers on Fox, making it the third-most-watched game of the 2021 regular season. Indianapolis’ 22-16 win at Arizona averaged 12.6 million on NFL Network, the second-highest-viewed game in network history.

Lobbyists try to stop menthol cigarette ban

As federal officials finalize a long-awaited plan to ban menthol cigarettes, dozens of interest groups have met with White House staffers to try to influence the process, which has the potential to save hundreds of thousands of lives while wiping out billions in tobacco sales.

Biden administration officials have heard from tobacco lobbyists, anti-smoking advocates, civil rights groups, small business owners, and conservative think tanks. The lobbying push underscores the far-reaching impacts of banning menthol, which accounts for over one-third of the U.S. cigarette market.

The White House concluded its review of the Food and Drug Administration’s proposal Thursday after nearly 40 virtual meetings with outside groups, according to a government website. The FDA has pledged to lay out a detailed proposal for phasing out the flavor by month’s end, meaning an official announcement could come next week.

Meeting materials posted online show nearly all the groups opposing the ban have financial ties to tobacco companies, including businesses that sell cigarettes and nonprofit groups that receive charitable contributions.

Deputies discover man with severe injuries, tied and left stranded to die

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas (WOAI) — The Bexar County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) is searching for a suspect after a man was found on the side of a country road, tied up and severely injured.

Sheriff Javier Salazar says someone driving on a road Saturday morning just after 7:00 a.m. found the victim tied up with visible face and upper body injuries. They called 911 to report it.

When deputies arrived, they found a young man, possibly in his 20s, with a thin build, who was tied up and appeared to have suffered substantial injuries to his face and upper body.

“These folks, whoever did this to him, there seems to be a lot of hatred, and anger that went into this attempt to murder this young man,” said sheriff Javier Salazar. “To leave him out here to die on a country road, it’s a pretty heartbreaking situation.”

Feds find 'severe, systemic' problems in Mississippi prison

A Mississippi prison violated inmates' constitutional rights by failing to protect them from violence, failing to meet their mental health needs, failing to take adequate steps for suicide prevention and by relying too much on prolonged solitary confinement, the U.S. Justice Department said Wednesday.

The department released findings of its two-year investigation of the state's oldest prison, Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman. The probe started after an outburst of violence in late 2019 and early 2020.

"The problems at Parchman are severe, systemic, and exacerbated by serious deficiencies in staffing and supervision," the department said in its report.

It said the Mississippi Department of Corrections "has been on notice of these deficiencies for years and failed to take reasonable measures to address the violations, due in part to non-functional accountability or quality assurance measures."

Pro-Russian graffiti reportedly daubed on Games of Thrones site

Police in Northern Ireland are investigating reports that pro-Russian graffiti was found at a Game of Thrones filming location.

The graffiti - 'Z glory to Russia' - written in the large words and referring to the symbol Z painted on Russian tanks during the Ukraine invasion, appeared on the road at the Dark Hedges in Co Antrim.

The tree-lined route became world famous when it was featured in the HBO fantasy series and now attracts significant numbers of tourists.

The PSNI confirmed it had received a report that graffiti had been daubed on a tunnel at the Dark Hedges in the Bregagh Road area of Armoy.
