Exclusive: Warner Bros. Discovery is extending its commitment to the Turner Classic Movies brand on Max in a way that should please film history aficionados.

December 6, 2024
Heres something that will thrill Turner Classic Movies fans everywhere. IndieWire can exclusively announce that Warner Bros. Discovery is making a huge new curatorial investment in the TCM hub on Max, expanding the brands presence there to include hundreds of classic film titles that werent available there before. The move follows a year of positive headlines for the beloved TV network, which celebrated its 30th anniversary earlier in 2024, announced the expansion of its celebrated TCM Classic Film Festival with a New York City pop-up in January 2025, welcomed the cast of Pulp Fiction to its festival in Los Angeles, and continued having celebrated auteurs make their TCM Picks from its monthly lineups.
The expansion of the TCM hub on Max is something that cinephiles have wanted for some time. The programming there will more closely align now with whats on the channel (though, never fear, the beloved Watch TCM app will be unaffected by these moves), and a number of deep-cut titles are already on Max as of publication time including a collection devoted to Mickey Rooney, which goes beyond the obvious. (My comment: Not to mention he's the Star of the Month for December.)
The first Rooney title youll see in his section on the TCM hub is Words and Music, the 1946 MGM biopic of Lorenz Hart that features some of Rooneys finest acting, as well as a showcase of the studios top musical talent (we recently mentioned our love of the Gene Kelly and Vera-Ellen Slaughter on 10th Avenue number from that film). Theres also a lineup in celebration of Humphrey Bogarts 125th birthday including Key Largo (1948), Invisible Stripes (1939), and It All Came True (1940).
January will have a Cary Grant birthday commemoration including the films My Favorite Wife (1940) and Destination Tokyo (1943), and a George Raft lineup. February will be centered around 31 Days of Oscar (where Oscar-winning titles you dont necessarily think of right away, such as the delectable Neptunes Daughter from 1949, will get the spotlight, showing how TCM, at its best, always goes beyond the obvious) and an Elizabeth Taylor birthday tribute.

'It'll Be Brutal': Inside Trump's Planned War on Leakers and the Press (Rolling Stone)
In the highly tumultuous closing days of Donald Trumps first term in office, BuzzFeed News received an angry letter from his outgoing administration. The subpoena, issued on December 1, 2020, was delivered as Trump was preoccupied with efforts to overturn the democratic order and nullify the results of the presidential election he had just lost to Joe Biden.
As BuzzFeed reported at the time, Immigration and Customs Enforcement investigators issued a subpoena this week demanding BuzzFeed News identify its sources an extraordinary attempt by the government to interfere with a news outlet acting under the protections of the First Amendment, and a move that the agencys former chief lambasted as embarrassing.
The aggressive letter from the Trump-era ICE read: Failure to comply with this summons will render you liable to proceedings in a U.S. District Court to enforce compliance with this summons as well as other sanctions. It added, You are requested not to disclose the existence of this summons for an indefinite period of time. Any such disclosure will impede this investigation and thereby interfere with the enforcement of federal law.
To many media and political observers including officials who served in the Trump administration who were aware of the document at the time the subpoena wasnt worth the price of the paper on which it was printed. It was a temper tantrum, not a real legal threat. For starters, Trump and his officials would be out of a job in less than two months. There wasnt much will, much less the time, within the federal government to make good on this threat to an investigative reporter, his sources, and his publication. There wasnt even a chilling effect, per se, because their guy had failed at winning reelection.

Santa Clara County DA accuses hospitals of illegally dumping medical waste (CBS San Francisco)
"The county must stop illegally dumping hazardous waste and untreated medical waste. The county must stop illegally dumping dangerous drugs," Rosen said. "The county must stop illegally dumping human blood and human flesh." The hospitals are accused of mixing medical waste -- including human tissue and blood -- and narcotics like fentanyl with regular garbage. State law requires hospitals to incinerate or sterilize contaminated trash at high temperatures.
Authorities also said confidential patient information was included in the improperly disposed of materials.
The DA's office partnered with the Department of Toxic Substance Control to uncover three different locations where the materials were improperly dumped. The facilities are Valley Medical Center and O'Connor Medical Center in San Jose and St. Louise Regional Hospital in Gilroy.

Personal note: I never was treated or stayed in any of the hospitals, but my parents and grandparents were in O'Connor. (Additionally, it's a Catholic hospital.) This story shocked the hell out of me when I saw it earlier this week. Apologies for posting it so late.

TCM and Carol Burnett Team Up for "Sundays with Carol Burnett" Series Showcasing Classic Films and Iconic Sketches

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) has launched a special series called "Sundays with Carol Burnett," where the Emmy-winning actress, alongside TCM host Dave Karger, shares her favorite films and the comedic sketches they inspired on her iconic show. Airing throughout December, the program offers a unique blend of classic cinema and Burnett's humor, as per FOX 5 Atlanta.
The series kicked off on Sunday last week with "Gone with the Wind," followed by "The Carol Burnett Show" parody "Went with the Wind," featuring Burnett in the unforgettable curtain rod dress. This collaboration was the brainchild of Burnett and her husband, who hatched the idea after they met Karger, as Burnett recounted. "My husband said, We have an idea. What about if Carol comes on TCM, being interviewed by Dave Karger, and they show for instance the entire movie of Mildred Pierce with Joan Crawford, then we come back, and we show our takeoff that we did, called Mildred Fierce.," she told FOX 5 Atlanta.
Burnett, who first captivated audiences in the late 1950s with her comedic song about John Foster Dulles, continues to charm at the age of 91 as a guest programmer on TCM. Yesterday, viewers enjoyed a double feature with "Born to Be Bad" followed by the satirical sketch "Raised to Be Rotten," then "Torch Song" paired with the lampoon "Torchy Song." TCM will continue the series with more pairings on Sunday next week and on December 29, including "The Heiress" and its spoof "The Lady Heir," along with "Double Indemnity" and "Double Calamity," as per the Boston Globe.
The legendary Burnett, also known for her breakthrough role as Princess Winnifred in Once Upon a Mattress, continues to bring her comedic brilliance to classic sketches from her show. The Boston Globe recalls her audition for Mattress, describing her as "looking terrific: long-legged, great figure, huge smile, flawless skin, glorious red hair." Her timeless appeal mirrors that of the classic films she loves, showcasing her enduring talent and the lasting power of laughter.
