Nation's oldest nuclear plant on alert
Source: Associated Press
By JOSH LEDERMAN 21 mins ago
WASHINGTON (AP) The nation's oldest nuclear power plant is on alert after waters from a colossal storm reached high levels. Oyster Creek in Lacey Township, N.J., was already offline for regular maintenance before Sandy, a superstorm downgraded Monday night from a hurricane, slammed the East Coast.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says an "unusual event" was declared around 7 p.m. when water reached a high level. The situation was upgraded less than two hours later to an "alert," the second-lowest in a four-tiered warning system.
Federal officials say all nuclear plants are still in safe condition. They say water levels near Oyster Creek, which is along the Atlantic Ocean, will likely recede within a few hours. Oyster Creek went online in 1969 and provides 9 percent of New Jersey's electricity.

Minors Flee Central American Violence
Published on Oct 27, 2012 by AlJazeeraEnglish
More and more minors are making the long journey from Central America through Mexico and on to the US - alone.
Though these children are constantly threatened on their long journey to the US, violence is nothing new. Criminal gangs operate with impunity throughout much of Central America - making it one of the most dangerous regions in the world.
Women are the most vulnerable of these migrants and can face rape and kidnapping at the hands of drug cartels who frequently try to extort migrants, or worse.
In their home countries, gangs target children and try to force them to join. Children have described body parts being left on their doorstep as a reminder that if they don't join, this is what could happen.
Experts say this is one reason why so many are fleeing - even while realising that the possibility they won't survive the trip is very real.

NDAA Critic Stranded In Hawaii After Turning Up On No-fly List
Source: RT
17 October, 2012, 20:15
Wade Hicks was en route to a US Navy base in Japan to see his wife when armed military guards informed him that they had other plans. Hicks, an American citizen with no criminal record, had just been put added to a federal no-fly list.
After being escorted off his plane during a routine re-fueling stop on the Pacific Island of Oahu, Hicks, 34, was left stranded in Hawaii this week. In an interview, he suggests that his opposition to a newly-created law that allows for the indefinite detention of US citizens at military prisons without charge or trial could be to blame for his mistreatment.
"I was very, very vocal about the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) and I did contact my representative about it, Hicks tells talk show host Doug Hagmann. "I do believe that this is tied in some way to my free speech and my political view."
According to Hicks, he has little reason to believe otherwise. He tells Hagmann that he formerly worked as a contractor for the US Department of Defense and has undergone extensive background checks in order to obtain an enhanced license that allows him to carry a concealed firearm. Hicks says he also holds on to a special identification card issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the US Homeland Security Department sub-agency that administers pat-downs and screenings at airports across the country. An investigation carried out by Hagmann has led him to locating no criminal history for the man whatsoever.

The Debate's Outcome In One Picture

Candy Crowley Fact Checks Mitt Romney On Libya
Presidential debate moderator Candy Crowley corrected a testy Mitt Romney after the Republican presidential candidate charged that President Obama failed to call the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi an "act of terror."
More than an hour into the debate, an undecided voter in the town hall forum asked the president about the recent attack in Libya that killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three additional Americans.
When Romney responded to the question, Romney charged that it took Obama days to call the Benghazi attack an act of terror. This assertion was incorrect. Obama called the incident an "act of terror" during his remarks on September 12, just one day after the tragedy.
Obama interjected, telling the Republican presidential candidate to "get the transcript" of his remarks. When the governor doubled down on his charge, Crowley corrected him, saying the president "'did in fact' call the attack an act of terror.

About 2,000 people gathered on Sept. 28 at First Baptist North in Spartanburg, S.C., to hear high-profile Christians speak on defending the faith and applying a Christian worldview to their lives. Among the speakers: Eric Metaxas, Josh McDowell, andkeynote speaker for the eveningbest-selling author, filmmaker, and Christian college president Dinesh DSouza.
DSouzas speech earned him a standing ovation and a long line at the book-signing table immediately afterward. Although DSouza has been married for 20 years to his wife, Dixie, in South Carolina he was with a young woman, Denise Odie Joseph II, and introduced her to at least three people as his fiancée.
Finally, near 11 p.m., event organizer Tony Beam escorted DSouza and Joseph to the nearby Comfort Suites. Beam noted that they checked in together and were apparently sharing a room for the night in the sold-out hotel. The next morning, around 6 a.m., Beam arrived back at the hotel and called up to DSouzas room. Well be down in 10 minutes, DSouza told Beam. DSouza and Joseph came down together, and Beam took them to the airport.
The next day another conference organizer, Alex McFarland, distressed by DSouzas behavior, confronted him in a telephone conversation. DSouza admitted he shared a room with his fiancée but said nothing happened. When I called DSouza, he confirmed that he was indeed engaged to Joseph, but did not explain how he could be engaged to one woman while still married to another. When asked when he had filed for divorce from his wife, Dixie, DSouza answered, Recently.
According to San Diego County (Calif.) Superior Court records, DSouza filed for divorce only on Oct. 4, the day I spoke with him. Under California law, that starts the clock on a six-month waiting period for divorce. DSouza on Oct. 4 told me his marriage was over, said he is sure Denise is the one for me, and said he had done nothing wrong.

Oct. 8 at Aliya Institute in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.[/font]
JEWISH ELECTED officials on Monday called for the heads of two city cops caught on tape pummeling a young man who was sleeping inside a Brooklyn synagogue.
An NYPD spokesman said Internal Affairs is investigating the officers conduct regarding Ehud Halevy, 21. He was subjected to a barrage of blows after police roused him at the Aliya Institute in Crown Heights Oct. 8, according to a disturbing video that went viral Monday.
By my count, one officer punched the victim over 20 times after he was already subdued, said Council member David Greenfield (D-Brooklyn). Thats insane. He called for the NYPD to fire the officers, identified in court papers as Luis Vega and Yelena Bruzzese.
Internal Affairs has referred the matter to the Civilian Complaint Review Board, said a police spokesman. Vega has been placed on desk duty.

At Ngoc Sinh Seafoods Trading & Processing Export Enterprise, a seafood exporter on Vietnams southern coast, workers stand on a dirty floor sorting shrimp one hot September day. Theres trash on the floor, and flies crawl over baskets of processed shrimp stacked in an unchilled room in Ca Mau.
Elsewhere in Ca Mau, Nguyen Van Hoang packs shrimp headed for the U.S. in dirty plastic tubs. He covers them in ice made with tap water that the Vietnamese Health Ministry says should be boiled before drinking because of the risk of contamination with bacteria. Vietnam ships 100 million pounds of shrimp a year to the U.S. Thats almost 8 percent of the shrimp Americans eat.

At Chen Qiangs tilapia farm in Yangjiang city in Chinas Guangdong province, which borders Hong Kong, Chen feeds fish partly with feces from hundreds of pigs and geese. That practice is dangerous for American consumers, says Michael Doyle, director of the University of Georgias Center for Food Safety.
The manure the Chinese use to feed fish is frequently contaminated with microbes like salmonella, says Doyle, who has studied foodborne diseases in China.
