Sanitation man amasses $160k collection of items that were thrown in trash
For 30 years, sanitation worker Nelson Molina kept New York clean -- and in the process found beauty in other people's garbage, rescuing enough condemned items to fill a warehouse.
On the second floor of a sanitation truck depot in East Harlem, he has amassed an astonishing collection of thousands of objects once chucked in the bin but now lovingly cleaned and restored.
Walk to the back of the depot, climb a small, steep staircase and you find yourself in an enormous space that at first sight might appear to be a flea market.
But none of these items are on sale, although some could fetch a pretty penny. Molina values his collection at $160,000 and calls it 'Treasures in the Trash.'

(NEWSER) – Joe Vandusen had long ago moved on from his estranged wife, whom he split with but never divorced 16 years ago. Then he received a letter from the Iowa Department of Human Resources in February: "I opened it up and it was child support, for a kid that is not even mine," he tells WQAD. (The station's story is told in this YouTube video, too.) Vandusen, who lives in Davenport, says he can't be the father of his wife's 1-year-old child because he hasn't had any contact with her since they broke up. An official told him that doesn't matter.
Under Iowa law, Vandusen is legally responsible for any child born during the marriage, even if he isn't the biological father. "It shows Iowa needs to change their laws," he says. Vandusen, who cares for two biological children as well as two others with his girlfriend of five years, adds that he might take the case to court. (A Detroit man faced a similar problem.)

The child was recently born to his long estranged wife, and there's no way it is his.
"We've had no contact whatsoever in 16 or 17 years, and the child just turned one year old," Vandusen said.
But by law, Joe is still legally responsible and the state and its Child Support Recovery Unit, are telling him, he had better pay up.
"I explained to her this is not my child. I'm willing to do a paternity test and she flat out told me it does not matter, you're legally married to her. You're going to pay child support," Vandusen said.

Devin LeMahieu, the bill’s sponsor. “Registering people to vote will no longer be limited to those deputized and trained by a municipal clerk.”
But in practice, it means anyone registering to vote who isn’t already in the DMV database must provide a copy of their documentary proof of residence, since the SRDs no longer exist to verify it themselves. So if groups like the League of Women Voters want to conduct registration drives and register anyone without a driver’s license, they’ll now need to take a picture of the applicant’s proof of residence, print it out, and mail it in with the voter registration form.
“They’re just chipping away at our ability to do what we’ve always done,” said Andrea Kaminski of the Wisconsin chapter of the League of Women Voters, which frequently conducts community voter registration drives.
Kaminski said her group hasn’t yet decided whether or how it will be able to continue the drives. They’re considering organizing a bus tour with a portable scanner, but the whole effort, including hiring staff to run the program, might cost $100,000. “That is a huge hit for us,” she said.
Marissa Liebling, a lawyer with Project Vote, said the new restriction targets exactly the people who will be least able to register online.

Video of Indiana officer giving hungry homeless man cash, hug goes viral
video showing interaction between a Whiteland police officer and a panhandler has gone viral. But it’s not because of violence, it’s actually the opposite. The video shows the softer side of law enforcement.
Instead of giving the panhandler a ticket, the officer gave him cash and a hug. It’s a story that has gone beyond the community of just 4,700 people. The video has been viewed more than 53,000 times and that’s just on the police department’s Facebook page.

Whiteland police officers always have their body cameras rolling. That was no different when officer Tyler Croy saw a man begging for money on Whiteland Road near I-65. In the video, you can hear their conversation.
“What does your sign say?” Officer Croy asked.
“Homeless. Please help. God bless,” he said.
Croy could’ve given him a ticket, but instead he went above the call of duty and asks, “Are you hungry?”
The man nods his head yes. Then Croy says, “I got three bucks, okay? Alright, go Arby’s. Go to McDonald’s. Get yourself something from the dollar menu. Get you a drink or get you water. Whatever you want.”
Next, Officer Croy offers something that those three dollars couldn’t buy: comfort in the form of a hug.
“Are you crying on me? It’s alright. You’ll be fine. Here, come here. You’re good,” said Officer Croy.
The man replies, “It sucks out here, man.”

The Whiteland Police Department has been receiving numerous calls from area businesses that want to discuss employment with the man. Police are working on contacting him to follow up.

TIFT COUNTY, Ga. —
Surveillance video appears to show a Georgia teacher knocking down a special needs student in the hallway.
The incident happened at the Tift County Pre-K Center in Tifton on March 17.
The special education teacher, identified as Amelia Stripling, has since resigned, according to WALB.
The child’s mother, Sarah Patterson, said her son just turned 4-years-old.
She said Stripling thrust her knee into the boy’s back, causing him to fall.

NYPD officers zip EDP - emotionally disturbed person, into specially made bag
Cops restrained a crazed man in Manhattan by placing him head-to-toe in an enclosed body bag, an online video shows.
In the bizarre video, uploaded to YouTube Thursday, a group of officers can be seen zipping up the live man into a blue-and-white NYPD sack near 14th St. in Eighth Avenue.
It was not immediately clear what happened to cause cops to restrain the man, but an NYPD spokesman said cops use the burrito-type bag “when an EDP is violent and may cause harm to themselves or others.” The sack has vents and allows for breathing, the spokesman said.
In the bizarre video, uploaded to YouTube Thursday, a group of officers can be seen zipping up the live man into a blue-and-white NYPD sack.
The man who took the footage was dumbfounded at what he called cruel treatment.
"Dude, that is the craziest s--t I've ever seen done to somebody in my whole f--king life,” he said as cops pulled the sack over the man’s head.

The events leading up to the arrest are unknown but the man was put on a gurney and carted into an ambulance, according to Gothamist.
Mike could be heard saying that the police 'maced' the man before allegedly kneeing him to the ground.
According to a police spokeswoman, the bag is used on emotionally disturbed individuals (EDP) who could potentially cause harm to themselves or someone else, according to the New York Post.
'The bag is ventilated and they can breathe,' the spokeswoman added.
The EDP bag was first produced by a company called HELGEN for the NYPD's Emergency Service Unit, according to Gothamist.

Baby born with thick hair
New mother Mackenzie Kaplan shared a picture of her newborn daughter on Facebook and Izzy's impossibly thick mane was soon shared on Imgur, Reddit and now, she's even appeared on Good Morning America.
"Shew as a C-section, so I got to see her first and I saw her hair, but honestly, we were just happy to see her. She was two weeks late already, we'd already been to the hospital once already so we were happy to see her at all," her father David Kaplan laughed to GMA.
As for her thick locks? "She woke up that way."

Her mother Mackenzie said it all started with a selfie on Facebook and it's now been viewed more than three million times, but she's happy to "bring a smile to everyone's face" by seeing her daughter for the first time.
"I don't put any product in it, we just let it go. It's crazy, that's the only word to use in this situation. It's been a lot of fun."
